Women's Group Condemns NOW Endorsement of Obama - WaPo
<snip>

A group of Hillary Clinton supporters condemned the National Organization for Women's endorsement of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden earlier this week.

"The New Agenda is concerned that NOW's recent endorsement of Barack Obama leaves many women in this country out in the cold," the nonpartisan nonprofit group said in a release Friday. "The endorsement seems all the more puzzling given the fact that the Republican Party is running its first female candidate for Vice-President, Gov. Sarah Palin."

The New Agenda points out that since its 1966 founding, NOW has previously endorsed at the presidential level only four times -- and each time there was a woman on the ticket: Shirley Chisolm in the 1972 Democratic primary; Democrats Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro for the 1984 general election; Carol Mosely Braun in the 2003 Democratic primary; and Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary.

"We find it quite perplexing that NOW has chosen to endorse an all-male ticket after not endorsing recent candidates such as Gov. Bill Clinton, Sen. Al Gore, or Sen. John Kerry," said New Agenda co-founder Amy Siskind in the statement.

The New Agenda represents the coming together of more than 30 prominent Clinton supporters, many deeply involved in the bitter Democratic primary battle, into a new post-primary initiative to fight media sexism. The group, explained Siskind in an interview, evolved from the Together for Us group of Clinton supporters founded by, among others, Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, who endorsed Obama rival Sen. John McCain this week. The group also has drawn members from some of the other pro-Clinton efforts, such as Cynthia Ruccia, who during the primaries was a leader of the Ohio-based group Clinton Supporters Count Too, and, later, Women for Fair Politics.

The New Agenda's commitment to being nonpartisan reflects the split among its Clinton loyalists over who to support in the general election. But it also allows the group to try to press its anti-sexism agenda with both parties. Siskind said New Agenda has found the McCain campaign more receptive to its overtures, holding meetings with McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina and senior campaign strategists.

"Through Carly, McCain had promised us he would have more women in his administration than any president in history," said Siskind, who added that she felt the group's pressure played some small role in McCain's choice of Palin as his vice presidential running mate.

Already, the group has come to Palin's aid, and it has promised to watchdog the press on her behalf. "We cannot and will not sit idly by while another qualified candidate goes through what Senator Hillary Clinton had to endure," said Siskind at the end of August.

On the Obama side, the group has met with adviser Mark Alexander, the campaign's one-time policy director, and is hoping for meetings with more central actors soon.

seriously, I have no understanding of these women. So Sarah Palin has a vagina? So what?? So did Queen Elizabeth the first and Bloody Mary Tudor - would they back them too if they were still around? No, Palin hasn't murdered yet (at least I don't know if she has) but her itchiness to get into a war is pretty sick.

5. The irony
The irony is that most of the sexist treatment Hillary received in this campaign came from conservatives, and when sexist remarks or gimmicks were leveled at Hillary, conservatives always snickered and laughed.

And now these PUMA's want to throw their lot in with them.

14. Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild:
I think that Gramps and Gidget should put Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild front and center in their campaign. Yes indeed, titled nobility are such a draw.

I really do not think that Palin's vagina trumps her fundaloon creationist abstinence-only desire to force her religious idiocy, including abolition of women's reproductive health care rights, on all of the other voting vaginal humans. Most of the vaginally equipped people I know just aren't that stupid.

43. Yes they are, in the most transparently tokenish way.
Much as a detest Condi's political/economic philosophy, her qualifications are substantial and get my respect. Clearly, those who chose Palin to be McCain's "soul mate" care nothing about qualifications, but only about a candidate's malleability and willingness to be used.

24. I don't find it perplexing that NOW would choose to endorse this ticket at this time.
They are making a VERY powerful statement about the woman running on the ticket they oppose. NOW recognizes that people are individuals - not just a collection of anatomy - and that a woman with an agenda like Palin's is bad for women overall.

Anyone with some critical thinking skills could easily figure out why NOW chose to endorse the Obama/Biden ticket.

28. Exactly, NOW endorsing Obama/Biden is protecting women
who may have otherwise thought to vote for Palin. If they are NOW members and received this, they will more than likely want to know why NOW endorsed an all-male ticket and then they will learn what they probably didn't know about Palin and that is that she's anti-woman.

31. Considering Palin wants to set women's rights back about
100 years or so, the endorsement of the Obama/Biden ticket was MORE than appropriate. Let's compare VP candidates here: Biden, authored the Violence Against Women act. Palin, thinks rape victims should have to pay for their own rape kits. Obviously, these women are not using their brains.

32. NOW was right
to endorse Obama. It's a women's rights group and the repubs are running a woman who's not for women's rights. I'd expect the same thing from the NAACP if the repubs picked a black person to run for vp who was not for issues important to black people. It's about the person's positions not about what the person looks like.
