Original message |
| I just got back from visiting my doctor, who told me that the patient before me - a very wealthy and |
 |
very staunch Republican - was saying how crucial it is for Obama to be defeated in November.
As the reasons for his believing this, he regurgitated every freeze-dried Republican talking point that's already been debunked a hundred times or more. And at the end of his ignorant diatribe, he leaned closer to the doctor and stage-whispered: "There's no way we can let *that guy* sleep in the Lincoln bedroom!"
My doctor said that when he left the examining room, he went directly to his desk and (for the first time in his life) made a political contribution, writing out a check for $1000.00.
To Barack Obama.

And his soul would be at rest. I'd sure like to wake up John Wilkes Booth from his grave when Obama becomes President. Ole John W. Booth hated Lincoln for "freeing" the slaves. Futhermore, I'd like to see Obama's little girls, and Joe's little girl all jumping up and down on Lincoln's bed.

to speak out in every way possible to save what has become a very fragile to non existent democracy. Three cheers to this good man. If he had spoken of something medical it would be a diff story. I suppose it could be spun, insanity is a medical condition and like most pugs this patient was totally insane. My diagnosis is that he needs an exhaustive colonoscopy procedure with some very primitive equipment.

only a few of those will admit that it is skin color that they are voting on.
This election is about race. It is about a generational difference in racial attitudes, and it is about whether we are going to move forward into a truly multi-racial new republic, or back to an intolerant, semi-theocratic know-nothing republic in decline, descending into increasingly authoritarian patterns of behavior in an increasingly corrupt and dysfunctional and bankrupt system. The future, if we decide wrong, does not look bright.

I concede your point about those votes: they weren't ours to begin with and aren't likely to be democratic votes until even the self-retarded get that the other side is bending them over and laughing about it.
However, I put forth the following proposition: white suburban voters, educated white suburban voters, educated middle class non-rural white suburban voters voting PalinCaine, are doing so in many cases because, consciously or not, they cannot vote for the smart black man running for president and so, despite the manifest corrupt incompetence of the republican party, despite the fact that McCain is a senile fool and Palin is an ignorant dangerous radical loon, they are going to pull the R lever.

What you've said gives a good explanation for WHY the patient felt he could reveal his prejudices to the doctor. The educated, moneyed asswipe figures the doctor is probably just like him because he (the doctor) is probably white, prosperous, middle-aged. I've had supposedly intelligent rethugs automatically assume I'm one of them because of similar factors. It's like they assume we're all a club and we're all harboring racist fears, so they give their signal that "it's OK to let me know you agree." Wink-wink, nudge in the ribs.

 |
but most younger people who didn't grow up caring about skin color, the issue won't even register. That's how it was for me until my grandmother (lifelong democratic voter) brought it up and I realized that for some of the older people who have racism ingrained in them it will be an issue. In her case she says going to vote Obama after my brother and I called her out on the racism, because really - why is skin color a reason to vote or not vote for someone? It's not, it should be about the issues. I think that there's enough of us talking to people like her to make any sort of impact race would have a moot point.

My MIL, SIL and my mother. All vote Dem all the time, but either won't vote or will vote McCain from sheer racism.
Come on, you have a miserable old geezer and his unqualified VP vs a brilliant, inspirational Kennedy-esque guy and his amazingly experienced VP. The only 2 reasons this isn't a McGovern sized blow out is 1) racism 2) corporate ownership of the main stream media

It's hard to argue with stupid people, and God bless them all, none of them are splitting atoms. My SIL is a competent nurse, but outside of nursing, she's dumb as a doorpost.
My MIL and mother are products of their time, when you associated only with people just like yourself - in their cases, 100% with other white, lower-middle-class Catholics. Hell, my mother thinks Italian-Americans are "exotic"!!!

to whom merit means nothing. I don't think we could have found a better human being to represent us than Barack Obama. I am so proud of him and his beautiful family. Talk about 'family values'!!

He has shown he will say, or do, anything to win the White House - even if that means catering to racists. Look at who he picked for VP and as another poster said, he even opposed MLK Day. We didn't have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in Arizona until after a tourist boycott in 1992.

 |
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 12:53 AM by Miss Chybil
even though I didn't agree with him. Whenever I wrote his office I ALWAYS got a letter back. I never liked the answer, but he sent the letter. Jon Kyl has never answered any of my letters. Anyway, I used to respect McCain, but he lost me when he bowed to Bush after the South Carolina thing and he's gone downhill for me ever since. Actually, lately, he's just gone off the cliff. He has sold his soul. You are exactly right.

In fact, I can't think of a more appropriate person to sleep there!
BTW, isn't the Lincoln Bedroom a guest bedroom? If so, I suspect Barack wouldn't be the first person of obvious African ancestry to sleep there. But if I were Michelle, I'd convince him to join me there for a night of wild passion!

| 59. Was at lunch today with a friend who leans repub, but am working on her, |
 |
but anyway, our friend the owner of this establishment comes over as always and fills us in on his impending divorce and his selling of the restaurant we're in. Conversation is moving along when he says that his girlfriend, and I'm thinking his girlfriend??, I didn't know he was even seeing anyone prior to today, has two kids a boy 8 and a girl 11 and that they're half black that their father was black. I go "you're kidding me how cool is that" and my friend kinda looks a little dismayed and I say well congratulations, good for you and you're gonna vote for Senator Obama aren't ya??? and he says well my whole family have been republicans all their life but I refuse to vote for mccain. I slap him on the back and say good, one more for the good side and my friend just kinda rolls her eyes. I smile and he, the owner says that he just might. I probably shouldn't have said that but what the heck, he was a good father to his own two sons who are 20 and 21 and I just kinda blurt it out. Am still working on my friend. We've never talked politics at any length though, I just might have to start working a lot harder on her.

| 75. Ummmm...point of order |
 |
Isn't the Lincoln Bedroom the one that honored guests and/or people who've made BIG damn contributions (in whatever fashion) get to use? Point I'm making is that the President doesn't normally sleep in the Lincoln bedroom, does he? (refraining womanfully from making comments about sleeping on the couch or in the doghouse due to domestic discord... )
