I keep hearing from lots of women that there's something not quite right about the middle aged Sarah Palin, and of course there is a lot not quite right about her. There's her lack of knowledge, her attempting to bs her way through questions when she can't understand what the question is, there are the ethics investigations, the financial disasters she seems to leave behind, her disregard for crime victims, the mystery surrounding how a woman in labor first gives a speech then travels 8 hours or more via flights to Alaska allegedly to have a baby, the ethics investigations going on, and so much more. But no, that's not quite what people are referring to about Sarah Palin.

Women are finding her *slutty* (I've gotten several e-mails on that), and men are finding her *wonderfully, delightfully slutty,* and yet she's not showing any body parts! NOT A ONE! The woman's covered head to foot. Sure she's not exactly bad looking. She's had obviously had some face work done, crowned all her teeth, etc., but she does look pretty good for her age! And she is dressed completely and fully, showing no skin, and heck, she's even wearing GLASSES, which one might sometimes (wrongly) associate with an unsexual or asexual nature! So why are men and women (except for the evangelibots, Rove and the GOP) reacting this way towards her? I mean, there are good looking women in politics and *they* don't cause other women to be repulsed nor men to be behaving as if they had been injected with Viagra.

So there I was, trying to figure out what the heck people could possibly see in a fully-dressed, eyeglass-wearing middle aged female with some surgery, that could possibly cause people to see her as slut material. Then suddenly it hit me. Tina Fey gave me the answer.

If you remember in the SNL skit, when Tina Fey played the part of Sarah Palin, towards the end she went into a winking/kissing/lifting her skirt/flirting/touching herself/modeling for the audience thingie. I started looking up videos of Sarah Palin to see if any of that had any basis in fact. I even reviewed the one with Charles Gibbons (in which he looked clearly PISSED!)

And what did I find?

I found that Sarah Palin, whether talking to one person or an audience, if there are males, she does these things:

* Slides her hands up and down her thighs slightly lifting her skirt;
* Slides her hands along her neckline;
* Gently plays with her earlobe or earring;
* Turns her head coyly;
* Winks at people in the audience;
* Slides her hand down her arms;
* Tugs on the bottom of her skirt;
* Glances suggestively out of the corner of her eyes;
* Crosses her legs and slides her hand down her leg;
* Purses her lips as if she were waiting to be kissed;
* Uses a babyfied voice at times;
* Leans forward and uses the person's first name in a breathless voice;
* And much MUCH more!

The woman is clearly behaving as if she were feeling herself up and in desperate need of __ __ __.

If she were wearing a thong and working at The Body Shop strip joint she'd go unperceived because she'd fit in so well.

I've NEVER seen either a female politician, Republican or a Democrat, or any female touching and feeling up herself in front of an audience or even in public. Hadn't, that is, until this creature.

It's like the frikkin' Twilight Zone, only a rather puke-provoking one. Nasty female.

I think she's quite physically attractive, and I can easily see why men find her that way. I can think of many many other political women who are less PHYSICALLY attractive (and yet eminently more qualified to be in politics thank goodness).

I have to say though, that Alaskans males and females look quite young for our age in general. We do not have to contend with direct sunlight like you all do for most of the year. Most life long Alaskans I know do not have many wrinkles until late middle age. I don't think she has had face work done IMO.

Sarah makes a great point, but in order to cast it in the proper light, we need examples. Like that video excerpt of McCain checking out Palin's butt at that campaign rally a couple of weeks ago.

I don't find her particularly attractive, nor do I find her particularly unattractive. I was equally mystified to find that many men considered her to be a "babe." Now I know why. I've only seen still photos of her. I have never seen her on video of any kind. I don't really watch TV. I read to gather information.

My daughter says yum also. But I was raised a puritan, and even if I have tried to be more open, my taste still goes with the dressed man. Also many years a go, going swimming in the Caribbean with a bunch of guys, me the only adult female, and several of the guys in the speedos seemed to be very excited to be swimming. They were not embarrassed, I was, but it was me that was forced (by my then husband) to take photos of them.

Explanation of being raised a puritan, growing up I was not allowed to go swimming unless I could swim in a dress and in a place where there were no males. I never went swimming. Then imagine my dilemma when I waded into the pond to be baptized, in two layers of clothing with plenty of men among our church group attending/watching. Mixed messages in my fifteen year old brain almost caused me to drown of embarrassment.

and I think that anyone who uses it should keep it to that context, or they keep the door cracked for denigrating the success of any woman whose sexuality is publicly apparent. There's a nuance about the word that is rhetorically powerful and psychologically meaningful, and I think that using it out of its original context perpetuates a view that women's sexuality belongs in private. Such thinking is scary. Sarah Palin is a good looking woman, and I don't fault her for being pretty or for playing it up. I fault her for her thinking, which is so misguided, I wonder by what sociological herring we're tricked into attacking her sexuality. It's like she's triggering some primitive, latent thinking about women that's okay to resurrect because we universally don't like her, which really troubles me.
