Palin: "It was an unfair attack on the verbiage that Senator McCain chose to use"

http://thepage.time.com/2008/09/17/leave-my-candidates-verbiage-alone/

The Alaska Governor tells Fox News’ Hannity in an interview that the Democrats launched are unfairly targeting her running mate for saying the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

“It was an unfair attack on the verbiage that Senator McCain chose to use…He means our workforce. He means the ingenuity of the American people and of course that is strong and that is the foundation of our economy.”

All I'll be able to picture when they show her with Hannity (which, admittedly, can only be clips since I won't go to Fox) is the footage of crabs doin' it, which Jon Stewart ran the other night as a "clip" of the interview. Bom chicka wow wow.

29. foundation V. fundamentals
fundamentals implies a performance measure.

Foundation implies in place structural objects.

Much different implications in the word choice.

But even foundation is not enough. It's not JUST innovative or hard working employees, for capitalism to work you need CAPITAL, management, and labor. IF any of those are missing (and I would submit that two of the three are missing right now), then the fundamentals or foundation is "bad".

And, of course, I would add that another foundation that is missing is a well regulated environment (to prevent cheating and ensure the good of all capitalists, including the workers and investors).

Anyone with a basic understanding of economics (macro) would understand this.

33. Do they have any explanation for anything that doesn't involve whining
about being unfair or sexist or mean or whatever?

John McCain is the first person to ever describe the foundations of our economy as "the people". And I can't imagine anyone (other than Hannity) would buy into that explanation. Even Bush*, who is the biggest idiot around, speaks about "foundations of our economy" in terms of statistical facts, such as unemployment, GDP, stock market, etc. McLiar and Pain have redefined the word.

48. Dictionary definition of verbiage - Merriam Webster
verbiage
One entry found.

....
1 : a profusion of words usually of little or obscure content <such a tangled maze of evasive verbiage as a typical party platform — Marcia Davenport>
2 : manner of expressing oneself in words : diction <sportswriters guarded their verbiage so jealously — R. A. Sokolov>

----------

I choose the first definition in this case.

50. According to the dictionary
Verbiage-

1. overabundance or superfluity of words, as in writing or speech; wordiness; verbosity.
2. manner or style of expressing something in words; wording: a manual of official verbiage.

An excess of words for the purpose; wordiness.
The manner in which something is expressed in words: software verbiage.

Verbage-
verbage spelling, jargon
/ver'b*j/ A deliberate misspelling and mispronunciation of verbiage that assimilates it to the word "garbage". Compare content-free. More pejorative than "verbiage".

68. That same old absolutely relative rhetoric, "All truths are True."
"If I say 't - a - b - l - e' means a vehicle with four wheels, that's what it means, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I THINK." "If I say the the climate change 'hockey-stick' isn't the result of human activity, it isn't the effect of human activity, BECAUSE that's what I think."

For a bunch of folks who say they speak for "God" and that they abhor relativity, they sure are confused.

69. LAY OFFA MY VERBIAGE!
Verbiage should be off limits for both of the campaigns. Let's put an end to these disgusting and unfair attacks on verbiage.

So unfairly attacked! It can't even defend itself! It can only sit there on the pages of the dictionary!

75. OK, Sarah, is there anything it IS okay to attack? Seriously?
Every single attack on you and your sorry partner have been entirely legitimate, and yet you consistently whine about how "unfair" the Democrats are. Cindy McCain said she thought Obama "stepped over the line" by noting - correctly - that her husband is out of touch with the average American.

These things are unfair? Grow a spine, lady. Do you really think actually BEING Vice President will be any easier?

Do you not realize that your presentation is ALL ABOUT the "verbiage" used? If McCain didn't mean that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" he probably shouldn't have said it. If he really meant the "workforce and ingenuity of the American people" (and I doubt that; it's not a particularly brilliant backpedal), perhaps that's what he should have said.

You're all talk, Sarah Palin. All talk, no walk.

Attacking what McCain actually said strikes me as fair game.

91. Note to Palin/McCain campaign
(that rhymes and for some reason, that scares me)

Dear J & S,

Note to please reconsider usage of word "verbiage" as it could be construed by base as elitist, were either of you to suddenly become African American. Saw the native dress Palin was in at grocery store recently, and with those sort of exotic roots (not hair dye) she could be considered...well, uppity. So stick to agreed upon words only: country first, mission, god, terrarists, war on american way of life, newclear, life, and conservative. If you both are committed to party (also these words have been approved), you will find these words can be mixed up and reused in all kinds of ways!

Please have fun while on the campaign trail but do remember to stick to the script. Yesterday was an example of what happens when either of you improvise, and as Rove has tried to express to you both, we can not protect you in the event of your departure from the readiness of the pre-approved script. You have only to refer to Quayle if you doubt our greater knowledge on the subject. Remember, we got W where he is today. Listen to us and you will be international stars!

Limit comments re the economy to "the American people are hurting" and "change". We've been hearing them a lot and the masses seem to like them. However, remember they are more interested in you as people than your policy positions and in general, we prefer to remain flexible in the readiness regarding policy. Therefor, good topics are : babies, guns, recipes. That's what brings in the votes!

Regards,

S. Schmidt, Campaign Manager (GOPPER)

The "fundamentals of the economy" are not EVER used in reference to the American worker.

92. Sarah Pailn on the economy:
"All your base are belong to us"

If she is right and he thinks fundamentals = workforce, he is even less informed about economics than we give him credit for.
