DKOS poster: PUMA no more - I'm coming home
by Lying eyes
Sun Sep 14, 2008 at 11:53:19 AM PDT

There was nothing I resented more in the aftermath of the primiaries than being told to "get over it". How dare any of you, how dare anyone tell this lifelong Democrat who sincerely believed Hillary Clinton was the best qualified candidate for president to instantly turn my allegiance elsewhere?

Feeling as I did I naturally aligned with numerous groups under the umbrella acronym, PUMA, which many here derided as composed of "16 Republicans, dead enders, sore losers" and a number of less complimentary epithets. You were mistaken about that. The people I knew long and well were like me with years of expeirence as Democratic activists. True, some have a "we were robbed mind-set" but they also have a legitimate list of grievences against the DNC, grievences I shared but grievances I am now willing to push aside because I cannot live with myself if I don't return to my party and do my little bit to defeat the GOP.

If you've read this far you may already have guessed that the GOP convention is responsible for my change of mind and heart. Yes, Sarah Palin is part of it but more than that just seeing these people in convention, these blood thirsty Babbits and their brood, was a wake-up call - a virtual slap in the face provoking a voice screaming from within: YOU'RE A DEMOCRAT, DAMMIT, WAKE UP!

So here I am, grabbing on to the caboose, scrambling to get on board, hoping I'll be welcome even though I'm late to the party and praying I'm not the last to see the light.

I'm too old and jaded to be consumed by the hope message but when faced with the alternative of the McCain/Palin nightmare, the sweet, beautiful faces of my grandchildren demand that Barack Obama recieve my time, money and most important, my vote.

This vote's for you and your future, Lauren and Zoe!

I'm so touched by this post. In the end, its all about the world we want for our kids.

60. There's a 93 year old Woman
in my town who regularly drives herself the 6 miles into town to have coffee and pastry at the local market coffee shop.
She stood in the Hillary corner at our caucus last winter.
I sat down with her the other day and asked what she thought of Palin.
"Oh THAT WOMAN" she responded........no PUMA she!

9. Thank you!
I begged people to give the Hillary supporters (of which I was one) time. I didn't need it, but many did. I begged them to just back off and realize that dreams had been crushed, people needed to grieve, and their needs should be respected. Nobody responds well to being pushed into something they were just against yesterday.

Thankfully, we've had time to breathe

and the RNC reminded us all why we are Democrats

Thankfully, Hillary and Bill love this party enough to believe in it and work for it, even when they're suffering inside

Thankfully, this party is made up of tolerant, compassionate people who come together when they need to for the greater good

It's never to late to jump on board; Your party loves you and welcomes you home.

Thankfully, DEMS are awesome community organizers; here is a list of phone calls to be made...:-)

11. I still don't understand how a "lifelong Democrat" could ever have wanted to be a PUMA.
It just makes no sense. I've been through election after election where my primary candidate crashed and burned; but being a lifelong Democrat, I knew it was then time for me to rally behind the nominee, because what was the alternative -- voting for Reagan or Bush, or Bush the idiot son? HELL NO.

But, glad she's seen the light.

:eyes: Only a fair weather Democrat? No one said you'd win every time.

I've been a life long Democrat too but I never turned my back on the nominee.

Neither Clinton nor Obama were my first choice but there's no way in HELL,

I'd ever, ever go to the repuke side... EVER!!!!!! :puke: That goes against

the grain of most life time democrats, imho. Maybe 'LyingEyes' wasn't really

a 'lifelong' Democrat after all? Hope they mean it and stick around this time.

As feelings calm down and people start thinking about the issues again, the answer is not to slap them, instead it is to welcome them to the campaign.

That lifelong Dem never voted AGAINST the Dems. That voter was simply very pissed off and once they cooled down they realized how important this election is. That is what many of us said would happen and it is happening.

16. NEVER Was A PUMA. Or A Clinton Supporter... Just Completely Fed UP!
Nor was I an Obama supporters.

But then came Joe Biden and THEN CAME PALIN! That was ENOUGH to make me really mad. That, plus the goading of my daughter who watched my activism for so many years and called me out about it! So, now I'm back out on the streets doing what I can to STOP the INSANES!

It may just be a start, but it could grow to be something BIG! I don't know for sure, but it could WAKE UP the Democrats in Congress enough to actually grow a spine!

Time will tell, and the torch is being passed on to the next generation so you better GET OUT AND VOTE. This election isn't just another American Idol moment! It's SERIOUS and it's the FUTURE!

22. Why would a self declared activist align their activism with the Democratic Party?
This is one thing I do not understand. Activism is not about aligning yourself with a political party. It's about forcing the hands of both parties and public institutions towards change.

It's called direct action and used congruruently with a bottom up strategy.

Maybe I have the definition of activism wrong in this tense?

25. It not about being politically neutral
It's about the issue being more important.

In that sense there is political polarization.

MLK was an activist but not alligned to a political party. So was Emma Goldman and Helen Keller when they spoke out against child labor.

working from within the system for change? One can be an activist and not be controversial or outlandish. ANYONE who is activelyworking towards a goal is an activist really.

In fact, everyday activism can be rather tedious...

72. Actually, activism can be about aligning yourself
with a political party. There are all kinds of activists out there, but a partisan political system relies heavily on its base of activists to go about its business.

The term "activist", to my mind, is used to distinguish one from three categories of people: apoliticals, who don't engage in any political activity, regular citizens, who vote but usually don't do much else, and those who engage in politics as a profession, whether they be folks who are academic political scientists, pollsters, or lawyers/aides/staffers.

The switch was a no-brainer to me. The poster said it in his/her last line: "This vote's for you and your future, Lauren and Zoe!" I admire and respect both Clinton's very much but I would not for a second sacrifice the well-being of my family out of loyalty to a candidate...any candidate. I hope that the remaining PUMA'S let go of their egos just long enough to see what they are doing to the future of their children...and to ask themselves, is it worth it????

37. Excellent post! Welcome back. Hillary will be fine...she'll be a lion in the Dem Party for years
for years to come. She'll be, and is, a force to be reckoned with. She may be, if she wants it, a cabinet position holder if (when) Obama wins.

I, too, have "come home" in a sense to Clinton, who I despised by the end of the primary. But seeing Palin up on that stage at the Repub Convention, I saw what a shell of a woman we could end up with in the White House. What a stark contrast between those two...Palin and Clinton. One a REAL politician and policy maker, one a REAL intelligent, with-it, together female leader, and the other a charade put together by P.R. men for the little stupid people in their audience.

Here's to Clinton and Obama and the Dem. Party.

Hillary will continue to be a force to be reckoned with, thanks to her very impressive convention speech and he subsequent stumping for Obama with which she is repairing a lot of damage to her reputation. I'm sure I will continue to disagree with her on many things, so long as she backs the DLC policies, but intramural fights are what the Democrats are all about and I would be more than happy to see her putting her talents to work for an Obama administration. Maybe, by the time Obama's term is finished, the DLC will see the errors if its ways.

Till then, lets work together to beat those Republican bastards.

after getting temporarily misled for a few months.

After all, Palin is a hunter that would probably shoot PUMAs from her helicopter.

50. This election is bigger than just our small complaints and disappointments.
We have lost two elections- both with stellar candidates that would have made excellent presidents and the reason is the gutter politics of the Republicans who never met a lies they wouldn't tell or a character assassination they didn't consider beyond acceptable. Our country is going to hell and we have an opportunity to stop it. For me, Palin was the catalyst. She is in my estimation, George Bush in a skirt. Unqualified, cocky and ignorant of all things outside the state she lives in.

Thank you for coming back into the fold. You are right, we are all Democrats and we have an obligation to our children and our grandchildren to make this country and the world a better place for them to live in.

58. I'd like to hijack this thread for a second...
...to thank the Clinton supporters at DU who knew all along that this election was bigger than personal pride; who, bruised and tired from a long fight, jumped in right beside us and gave 100% of their support; who would have crawled through glass rather than appearing on CNN to strengthen John McCain's candidacy.

I'll welcome the PUMAs back to the Democratic party, but they owe every single one of the hard-working Clinton supporters who never left, who manned the phones, who passed out pamphlets, who registered voters, who sucked it up and did what was morally right, an enormous apology.

People used to know if you'd caused harm to somebody, however unintentional, you'd apologize. PUMA has given fodder to the Right and helped create discord within our own party. Even if she thought she was in the right, she should apologize.

82. OTOH, using biblical metaphors, which as an atheist I claim rights to
as literature,

The returning PUMAs are the prodigal sons for whom we slaughter the fatted calf because, while those who stayed were loyal, those who left and then returned had the harder journey.

They were lost, and now are found.

It certainly took more soul searching to leave and return, than to simply stay.

So welcome back.

96. The prodigal son knew he'd done wrong and asked for mercy.
"Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

"The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

I'm not asking for anybody to prostrate themselves and wail, but a little "sorry" goes a long way. PUMA is disgusting and inherently harmful to the Democratic party and anybody who spouted their nonsense needs to apologize.

In case you need a reminder of their ideals/tactics, this if from their website:

1. "Obama to Old Folks: You guys are idiots and I don’t need your vote…"
2. "More Bad News On Palin For Obama and his Bersekers…"
3. "Biden To Blacks: Vote Obama Because he is Black…"

63. 11th Hour
The 11th Hour is still better than that long midnight we will face if McCain wins. I understand some of us are angry at being insulted, but really, let's ignore the whole damned pound of flesh bs, and simply welcome people back to the front lines! Considering we know how dirty the GOP is going to fight, I think that the Prodigal Pumas will have more than a chance to offer something much better than any apology, support on the front lines. Let's not forget, Obama won this election by fighting on the ground, it will take nothing less to win this time.

However, I have no objection to someone's taking some time off before redirecting energies, even if the decision is ultimately a no-brainer.

74. Lots of Edwards, Richardson, Biden & Kucinich
supporters had to do what this person is just now doing. This is why it was sensible for those candidates to get out of the race when they did, because having a primary that's too much longer than the opposition's can suck people out of the process for too long.

Whatever the outcome, when this is all said and done, the folks in charge need to sit down and figure out a way to prevent our primary from taking so much longer than that of the Republicans to resolve.

75. If Obama wins-Hilary Clinton will be made famous
She will be rewarded with being the most influential person in the Senate if she doesn't accept a powerful position in the cabinet. Either way Democrats will be greatly aided in repairing the massive harm that the Bush administration has wreaked upon our nation.
God help us if McCain prevails in his dirty politics campaign and succeeds in pandering to the fundamentalist right-wing religious block. I really fear for the nation if these two know-nothings actually are to lead the country. Where is the outcry that McCain in tied to the PNAC neo-cons, the very people who have destroyed the military and bankrupt the nation in pursuit of their nitwit policy to transform the Middle East into Western loving democracies.

The line repeated ad nauseam here was, "If Obama loses, Hillary will be burned at the stake."

It's nice to see someone saying she'll get more recognition and not just that she won't get killed.

As for McCain, he's counting on the American people having the attention span of a gnat on crystal meth. I hope we as a nation are tired enough of being addressed as if we were all imbeciles.

99. To all those that are mad at this poster
Look, I get mad at Pumas. I go over to the Guardian UK and have to read several of them say "Obama was sexist, Hillary was robbed.." blah blah blah, and yes, I would like to ask Hillary why she did that whole "white middle class voter" business when she knew it would slap the face of many, like me, who defended her for years. I felt at times like she did not want my vote, like she was trying to trade me off in the hopes of getting Archie Bunker. However, the fact is, she is on board here and now, and just like I welcome her back, I welcome those whol follow her back. To quote Ben Franklin "if we do not hang together, we will all hang separately" and sorry to say, even those who might smile at the thought of McCain croaking and hading the White House to Palin will see the damage she would do, especially to women. Most Pumas do not want to give up Abortion Rights, much less put in the woman who allowed Rape Victims to be billed for Rape Kits.

Welcome on board, and I look forward to sharing a foxhole with you in the weeks to come.
