NYT editorial: Gov. Palin’s Worldview; "We kept wondering what on earth John McCain was thinking."

Gov. Palin’s Worldview
Published: September 12, 2008

As we watched Sarah Palin on TV the last couple of days, we kept wondering what on earth John McCain was thinking.

If he seriously thought this first-term governor — with less than two years in office — was qualified to be president, if necessary, at such a dangerous time, it raises profound questions about his judgment. If the choice was, as we suspect, a tactical move, then it was shockingly irresponsible.

It was bad enough that Ms. Palin’s performance in the first televised interviews she has done since she joined the Republican ticket was so visibly scripted and lacking in awareness. What made it so much worse is the strategy for which the Republicans have made Ms. Palin the frontwoman: win the White House not on ideas, but by denigrating experience, judgment and qualifications. The idea that Americans want leaders who have none of those things — who are so blindly certain of what Ms. Palin calls “the mission” that they won’t even pause for reflection — shows a contempt for voters and raises frightening questions about how Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin plan to run this country....

***

The (Gibson) interviews made clear why Americans should worry about Ms. Palin’s thin résumé and lack of experience. Consider her befuddlement when Mr. Gibson referred to President Bush’s “doctrine” and her remark about having insight into Russia because she can see it from her state. But that is not what troubled us most about her remarks — and, remember, if they were scripted, that just means that they reflect Mr. McCain’s views all the more closely. Rather, it was the sense that thoughtfulness, knowledge and experience are handicaps for a president in a world populated by Al Qaeda terrorists, a rising China, epidemics of AIDS, poverty and fratricidal war in the developing world and deep economic distress at home.

Ms. Palin talked repeatedly about never blinking....

This nation has suffered through eight years of an ill-prepared and unblinkingly obstinate president. One who didn’t pause to think before he started a disastrous war of choice in Iraq. One who blithely looked the other way as the Taliban and Al Qaeda regrouped in Afghanistan. One who obstinately cut taxes and undercut all efforts at regulation, unleashing today’s profound economic crisis.

In a dangerous world, Americans need a president who knows that real strength requires serious thought and preparation.

3. It's good to see these pieces, BUT
Work like this needs to start appearing in papers like the Des Moines Register and the MPLS Star-Tribune more so than the NYT. Unfortunately, papers like the NYT are dismissed by the right-wing whackos as 'elitist liberal rags' and thus the impact of these articles is somewhat diminished. Dems need to pressure some of the red-state papers to publish some honest pieces so that the battleground states can see these same issues put on display. I'd venture a guess that very few people in MO, IA, KY, PA and the like read the NYT or LA Times regularly.

8. Then by all means, write a letter to the editor.
I don't know where you are but if you live in a small town that doesn't carry the NYT, write to your local paper. You can be the voice people aren't hearing.

10. Good suggestion
and believe me, I have written to the editors of both of our local papers. I live in San Diego, and our newspapers are notoriously right-leaning. Several times a week I'll send specific individuals responsible for content emails and links to articles like this one with the tag line of "is this not news, Mr./Ms. Managing Editor?" I'll also post links to these articles in the comments sections on their Web sites, but it's no surprise that most of these comments are either scrubbed after they're posted or never allowed to be posted in the first place. I'm sure their pretext is, "we don't allow links to other papers," but what's hilarious is that many links to right-wing pieces are allowed to remain - which has also been the subject of several of my letters.

"Republican Media Consultants: McCain is lying, McCain wants to "go into the mud"
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080913/news_1...

Amazingly the San Diego Union Tribune ran this NYT article on its front page today, a day with train wrecks, hurricanes and local scandal.

McCain's ads widely flagged for distorting Obama stances

By Michael Cooper and Jim Rutenberg
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

September 13, 2008

While harsh advertisements and negative attacks are a staple of presidential campaigns, Sen. John McCain has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for stretching the truth in attacking Sen. Barack Obama's record and positions.

clip

First the McCain campaign twisted Obama's words to suggest that he had compared Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, to a pig after Obama said, in questioning McCain's claim to be the change agent in the race, “You can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig.” (McCain once used the same expression to describe Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's health plan.)
Then he claimed that Obama supported “comprehensive sex ed” for kindergartners. (Obama supported teaching them to be alert for inappropriate advances from adults).

Those attacks followed weeks in which McCain repeatedly asserted that Obama would raise taxes on the middle class, even though analysts say Obama would cut taxes on the middle class more than McCain would, and misrepresented Obama's positions on energy and health care.

A McCain advertisement called “Fact Check” was itself found to be “less than honest” by FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan group. The group complained that the McCain campaign had cited its work debunking various Internet rumors about Palin but implied in the advertisement that the rumors had originated with Obama.

“The last month, for sure, I think the predominance of liberty taken with truth and the facts has been more McCain than Obama,” said Don Sipple, a Republican advertising strategist.

Assaults on the truth haven't just come in negative campaigning. McCain yesterday again lauded Palin as a budget cutter, but he erroneously asserted that as governor of Alaska she had not sought congressional earmarks for her state.

Appearing on ABC's “The View,” McCain was pressed on Palin's record of seeking such targeted money for Alaska. “Not as governor she didn't,” McCain said.

“They just keep stirring the pot, and I think the McCain folks realize if they can get this thing down in the mud, drag Obama into the mud, that's where they have the best advantage to win,” said Matthew Dowd, who worked with many top McCain campaign advisers when he was President Bush's chief strategist in the 2004 campaign, but who has since had a falling out with the White House. “If they stay up at 10,000 feet, they don't.”

Sipple, the Republican advertising strategist, voiced concern that McCain's approach could backfire.
“Any campaign that is taking liberty with the truth and does it in a serial manner will end up paying for it in the end,” he said.

The fact that the San Diego Union Tribune, a major Republican outlet, ran this on the front page should be understood by McCain that he may want to go into the mud but that there are alot of other Republicans that are not going to follow him in.

24. Thank you
This fight is something that I understand that I need to MAKE time for this year. As a small business owner, I see first-hand how 'small government R's' run things. We're a growing, successful company that's been getting absolutely hammered with federal taxes, which I'm sure to relate to anyone who will listen. It's especially galling to know that our tax bill payments are in large part sent to fight a criminal war.

I don't post here much, as you mentioned, but I'm always reading. Aside from running the business, I also moderate/manage an unrelated Internet BB that's dedicated to the Green Bay Packers. I grew up in Green Bay. Anyway, with the whole Brett Favre unretirement fiasco of recent weeks, I had to spend a ton of time there helping out. I think the term here is "TS," which was what went on over there recently as well. Point is that I'm glad to see post count isn't a huge factor here in terms of someone's perspective, as that's all-too-often the case on BB's. BTW - tell your Phillies to take it easy on my crashing Brewers, will ya?

Back on point - I think we should all be doing what we can on an individual, voter-voter basis, but we should also be making an effort to, if not shape the media message, at least keep their feet in the fire for their muckraking and biased coverage of what's been going on. I will continue to do so. Thanks for the welcome.

>>>>I'd venture a guess that very few people in MO, IA, KY, PA and the like read the NYT or LA Times regularly. >>>

The only way to be sure that people hear this argument is for our candidates to MAKE IT THEMSELVES. This can be done via ad buys and/or on the stump ( and hope local media carries it.)

Point is: you can't expect the media... ANY part of it... to make the case for the DEMs. Most of the media is for McCain and/or is afraid of him (them).

Our people have to do it *directly*. That is... make the case.

17. NYT's article
I do not know about the other states you mentioned, but Kentucky has a reasonably liberal major newspaper, The Courier Journal. Granted it is not nearly as progressive as it was when the Binghams owned it (now owned by Gannett.) However, the editorial page is still quite liberal and is often a source of denigration of Mitch McConnell and his despicable tenure. The dems have not worked hard enough in Kentucky the past 8 years; they are a substantial part of the problem. However, even though Obama is probably not going to take Kentucky, even Mitch is in some trouble this year. Thank God! I lived in San Diego many years ago, when my husband was in the Marines. The San Diego paper then was as biased as they come...anti-progressive. I assume from your post that editorial policy is still true.

19. Yes, IMHO, it's still true
The local economy, especially these days with tourism way down, is dominated by huge defense contractors like Lockheed Martin and the enormous military infrastructure that dots our county map. That's probably how it was when you were here as well. The only thing that keeps me somewhat sane is that CA is not going to go red overall, but so many people I talk to from 'back east' - I grew up in Wisconsin - think that where I live is some liberal haven. San Diego is basically an R stronghold, and aside from a few local pockets, remains that way even now.

33. I see local papers all the time
And you can explain your "bounce" by the completely distorting hype bestowed upon Palin in the headlines, in the AP puffery, in the lack of any appropriate criticism or shock that at all offsets this. our papers are set up to respond to sensationalism, to positive political puffing, and uncritically relinquishing the entire national and world news sections to wire services. Those locals that chose the NYT byline hardly fared better at piercing the legitimization of yet another political slap in the face.

Please never forget this is what a vast segment of middle America gets as the main presentation of "truth, American style." The people's response, in fact, was more honest, infrmed and immediately critical than the papers. Then they look to the TV and papers and put their feet in the tidal wave of GOP slop. That is also why we should have reason to hope the people will return to their gut instincts not allowed in their mistakenly trusted news sources.

She’s Not Ready

By BOB HERBERT
***

How is it that this woman could have been selected to be the vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket? How is it that so much of the mainstream media has dropped all pretense of seriousness to hop aboard the bandwagon and go along for the giddy ride?

For those who haven’t noticed, we’re electing a president and vice president, not selecting a winner on “American Idol.”

****
Later, in the spin zones of cable TV, commentators repeatedly made the point that there are probably very few voters — some specifically mentioned “hockey moms” — who could explain the Bush doctrine. But that’s exactly the reason we have such long and intense campaigns. You want to find the individuals who best understand these issues, who will address them in sophisticated and creative ways that enhance the well-being of the nation.

***

Ms. Palin’s problem is not that she was mayor of a small town or has only been in the Alaska governor’s office a short while. Her problem (and now ours) is that she is not well versed on the critical matters confronting the country at one of the most crucial turning points in its history.

The economy is in a tailspin. The financial sector is lurching about on rubbery legs. We’re mired in self-defeating energy policies. We’re at war. And we are still vulnerable to the very real threat of international terrorism.

With all of that and more being the case, how can it be a good idea to set in motion the possibility that Americans might wake up one morning to find that Sarah Palin is president?

***

John McCain, who is shameless about promoting himself as America’s ultimate patriot, put the best interests of the nation aside in making his incredibly reckless choice of a running mate. But there is a profound double standard in this country. The likes of John McCain and George W. Bush can do the craziest, most irresponsible things imaginable, and it only seems to help them politically.

Going after Palin IS going after McCain.

There is a small but astoundingly loud contingent here that think that any criticism of Palin is somehow going "off topic" and a "distraction."

Sarah Palin's brief but disastrous public service record and lack of experience should be hit with the same passion and attention with which the Dems go after McCain. And I'm happy to see that so many Obama surrogates -- including Sen. Boxer who gave a pretty good response to Palin -- believe the same and are trying hard to expose what her selection as the Repub VP nominee says about McCain and the Republicans in general.

37. What concerns me about Gov. Palin in Charlie Gibson's interview she said:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/13/opinion/13sat1.html?h...

"One of the many bizarre moments in the questioning by ABC News’s Charles Gibson was when Ms. Palin, the governor of Alaska, excused her lack of international experience by sneering that Americans don’t want “somebody’s big fat résumé maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state.”

40. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry
I still believe the easiest way to deal with Caribou Barbie is whenever and wherever she speaks just to start chanting Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. (As in the Jerry Springer Show for those of you that have higher than a single digit IQ and have never watched the show.)

This marginalizes her and reduces her to a laughing stock even among her supporters. After all her supporters are the Springer shows base audience. Do this enough times and the media will have no choice but to report it and very quickly the meme will spread. We need to deal with these people with humor and reduce them to the ridiculous caricatures that they already are.

46. I hope the reporters themselves re-read this article every morning.
They need to realize their usual breezy reporting goes along with RNC talking points far too much, in service of the guy who made the rash choice of the unqualified Extreme Fundamentalist as his VP.

Let them reconsider what they are doing. Daily. Before going on air to talk up the GOP once again.

Or before going to press to force out articles trying to make the GOP positions sound reasonable when they are totally out to lunch. If the ideas are ridiculous-- it is time now to say so.

But the temptation to jump onto the next manufactured distraction (a la lipstick on a pig)will be very strong. They can keep their own careers more secure by going along.

Almost every professional woman I know uses "Ms" unless they have another title such as "Doctor" OR "Judge."

And the term "bastard" is NEVER an appropriate way to refer to a child.

75. Yes, this is the deciding factor for far too many
The abortion issue is first and foremost in the minds of a large segment of the VOTING portion of our nation. Unfortunately, that segment that believes that it is for the woman to decide aren't going to show up at the polls in the same number as the nitwit fundamentalists. Palin is their hero and it doesn't matter that she is a vindictive first class bitch and her family is a dysfunctional mess. She is the perfect replacement for Cheney.

77. That is the same reaction they had here to her as well.
Just so you'll know, that this isn't just a viewpoint held by "some Eastern elitist".
Many people here didn't know who the hell she was, and even after she was "introduced" to everyone at the RNC, they didn't like her.

The Republicans here are split between caring enough to go to the ballot box or staying home and raking leaves.

I think there will be a lot of leaves raked on November 4 this year.

There aren't any McCain yard signs here.
I haven't seen any.
I haven't even seen a McCain bumper sticker yet.
Here, where they voted for Bush by the widest margin of victory in 2004, except for one other state!!

It's like they are all ashamed for voting for Bush.
I hope they are, the Iraq War was started on lies, rumors, and innuendo.

Balance the record by nominating a female as VP.
Make that base who responds to soccer MOM, hunder, abortion hater stay with them.
There are more to add, but to get to the point ...

Then pull a switch.

She stays on as Gov and Cheney stays on as VP.

Which meams they are only replacing a handicapped Pres with a different handicapped Pres.

82. NY Times Op-Ed
I agree with the person who said this should appear in some red state papers, but you know what, chances of it happening are practically nil. I live in Florida and if something like this would appear it would set off a rash of letters to the editor from every righty telling them how wrong they were. Let's fact facts...Palin is a clown. Sure maybe she can get elected Governor of Alaska, but look at that state, it might as well be Greenland. Most of those people are so out of the mainstream they have no clue. Tell them a few moose-hunting stories, have a couple of cold ones and start spewing some righty stuff and you're bound to get elected. Look at that crooks Ted Stevens. Need I say any more. The people the Democrats ned to target are the undecided and Obama needs to hit hard on same old, same old with McCain and Palin.
