You WILL NOT Believe what happened today!!!!
I live in a very red county in a very red state (Alabama). I am a rest manager and today I had a customer (lady in her mid to late 60's)who called me to the counter. Following is the conversation:

Lady: is that your van with the Obama sticker on it?

me: yes maam

Lady: I noticed your "veterans for Obama" sticker and your Desert Storm tag and that you were in the Air Force.

Me: yes maam

Lady: I was in the air force and my husband is retired air force. We have voted republican our whole lives, but we are voting for Obama.

she then proceeded to tell me, that she bought some Obama buttons at our local Dem HQ. I said I was going to go buy and get some too. She said they were completely out of everything Obama. She then gave me one of her buttons and a big hug.

After she left, I had to step outside because my eyes started tearing.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A VERY LONG TIME I FELT THERE IS HOPE FOR MY COUNTRY.

just had to share.

133. Here's Another One
One of the ladies I know from the LDS Church told me she is voting for Obama, and we talked to her friend and now she is also voting for Obama, these are lifelong red state Republicans in Arizona. Also there is not one McCain sign in our town, there's a few Ron Paul signs but that's it.:applause: That's progress.:woohoo:

155. So Talk to your friend and find out why
And then report back to us. And don't take any vague answers. Dig until you understand.

If we are going to overcome these objections in the next few months we need to know why .

Information is like bullets. You need to pass it up to the front lines for it to be effective.

18. Yeah, apparently, Obama does very very well amongst veterans
I'm not sure of the numbers but apparently, because of McCain's horrible record with veterans despite being a veteran, Obama totally wins in the demographic of veterans.

This conclusion is based off of what others have told me but they don't tell me if there are polls that prove this.

Can anyone help me confirm that?

FLY BOY! Now that I have that out of the way, my son recently got out of the AF (And yes, I teased him too as he did me) and I regularly gave him and his squadron mates holy hell for voting Bush in '04. He is still in touch with the gang and I have been informed they have finally seen the light and will be voting Obama also. Here's a salute to you for your service brother!

23. I live in Cullman also, I know lots of people voting for Obama.
Not to say there aren't hard core republicans here. Most of them think of their political 'team' in the same way they choose Alabama or Auburn to root for; it isn't about issues, just sides. But more and more people are waking up.

148. I know what you mean about the Auburn/Alabama thing.
I was an out of state freshman at Samford University (the name may have changed since) and one of the first things my roommate wanted to know after my name was if I was for Auburn or Alabama. I didn't a shit. I would nod to either War Eagle or Roll Tide as needed.

And I think many will agree to Obama/Biden.

65. Yes, I'm also a Veteran for Obama.
I was in the Army for four years during the 80s. Both myself and my retired USMC husband are proud Obama/Biden supporters.

It's sad, especially for those who make under $250,000/year choose to vote republican. More than any other time in our history, now is the time to set "life-style" and "cultural wedge-issues" aside. Not all, but most representatives within the democratic party will stand up for "working Americans."

I'm glad that the tide is turing but still note that "the Officer ranks" tend to remain strongly Pro-GOP. Especially the Career Officers tend to permit "a zap" on their brain knowing that republicans will support the DOD and Pentagon "money pits."

80. Great account!
I too, live in a blood red area of my state (CA). To my dismay, I was talking to my neighbor this morning - the same neighbor I'd shared my liberal views with a couple of months earlier and had been tickled to was registered as a Democrat like the wife and I are - and listened while he told me that he couldn't abide an Obama/Biden ticket.

"Nope!" he sighed "It's gonna be one big welfare nation if it comes to him winning. We'll be payin' taxes to support every unwed N****r mother with 3 or 4 little ones! Handing out money to rebuild every shack that Katrina blew down - blah, blah, blah....."

Well, he's my neighbor. I wasn't just gonna jump in his shit and call his notions stupid. BUT, I did counter it like this.....

"Pal, look at what we're doing NOW! We're BORROWING Billions to rebuild a nation that we blew apart for NOTHING! Billions that WE, our KIDS, and THEIR KIDS are gonna hafta pay back WITH Interest! So WHERE would you rather our handouts to go??? HERE or Iraq??? Here or Georgia? Here or India? Here or a bunch of banana republics?"

He shrugged his shoulders and changed the subject. I'm glad he did so. I want to be able to have a good neighbor relationship with him. He's one of the few on our drive that isn't a blithering GOP devotee or Bible-thumpin' fundamentalist!

126. You should tell your racist neighbor who we are borrowing from...
...I'm sure if you told him, "yeah, but think about it, we are borrowing money from the damn Chi**s to pay for our war, and McCain was held captive by them," see what kind of reaction you get.

134. You should go to your state or city statistics to see if
you can find just exactly how many minorities vs anglo are on welfare. The numbers will surprise you. I would say if you could find national numbers that would be even better.

I don't say this because I hate those on welfare because many of them do need the help. I say this because what your neighbor spouted has been part of the Neocon divisive politics and racism.

Once you tell him the statistics ask him what else does he have?

97. There is no freakin' way that this election is close...NO WAY!
I have never believed the "media is lying to us" stories but I definitely do, now.

From all that I have read, from the people I have spoken with, from the polls that I have looked at -- no way is this election close.

The only way they are going to win is if they lie, cheat, and steal.

My daughter is married to captain in air force and they are the ones who got me into obama in january. She told me they are quiet about it because of his career and most officers are republican.

It will be great if Obama wins then it will be his boss and he will feel free to talk about him then.

This is what I'm talking about, folks.

We're out there.

Don't let the corporate media tell you how to feel. Remember, YOU are more important than you probably give yourself credit for. Go out and make the small difference. The little thing. The 'thumbs up'. The 'slightly-out-of-your-comfort-zone conversation'. The bumper-sticker. The T-shirt. We are more than a bunch of frustrated people now, we are a movement. Let's draw courage from each other.

100. I'm not believing the polls
I have a background in social sciences. Evidence and data are everything. Anecdotal accounts are ineresting but not a valid way to measure reality, BUT...

When I heard McCain got a 20% swing in white women (of which I am one), I had to say, "nope. Not possible."

One lady like her is one thing. The fact that the local Obama office is out of materials is another. I have to say, the polls have to be bogus somehow.

117. Yesterday I stopped by our Obama office in a very red county in Fla.
I bought the last Obama/Biden yard sign and 6 pins. But the 2 kids (at my age anyone under 30 is a kid) said they are almost out of everything. Thought that was very encouraging. There was an article last week in our paper about the office opening and the woman heading it up was from California. I said to her, I'm sure you know this is a very republican county. She said yes, she knew but they hoped to make some inroads and add to the states total. Seemed very upbeat.

After seeing this post, I had to register to this site. It's so nice to see that there really is some hope for this country. I am wishing the same for my hometown of Florida, where sadly the support for McCain continues to go up. Then again, I did see a bumper sticker supporting Obama today so maybe not all hope is lost. But we have to be strong, CONTINUE TO GET PEOPLE REGISTERED, and spread the great news about Obama. Go Obama/Biden 2008!!!

Sun City is filled with ultra-conservative oldsters.

There were 2 ladies ahead of him in line speaking to the clerk as they checked out.

Lady 1: I don't like how that Palin woman lets them shoot animals from airplanes. I'm voting for Obama.
Lady 2: Me too. When they handed that poor little baby down the line that was it for me.
Clerk: Great! I'm voting for Obama too!

151. Some people age with wisdom and grace...
others are still mad about the kid who one-upped them at the third grade Spelling Bee.

154. Thank you all for your kind words.
I do not post allot here, but I am on DU everyday getting the latest. Thank you for all your kind words of encouragement and especially for the personal comments. There are some folks that I work with and in my family that think I go overboard because I live, breath, and eat politics, to include two runs at public office. I have made alot of enemies in my community and at my kids school because I believe in speaking truth to power. I actually have single handedly stopped our schools from several illegal and/or unfair activities.
I have learned that the powers that be do not like involved parents and informed people. People who actually know of which they speak and can back it up. They don't like being out smarted or out maneuvered but as long as I breath I will stand up to those in power, for my kids, for whats rightand for my country. That is why I like Obama. We have alot in common. If I could give one bit of advice; never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in and for what is right. That is the only way we will save our country.

158. Power to ya!
"The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos.

Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it.

And even if he is not romantic personally he is very apt to spread discontent among those who are."
