On My Last Nerve
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 10:42 PM by NanceGreggs
An Open Letter to the American News Media:

As much as I try to avoid even the most peripheral contact with what passes for the news media these days, it is unfortunately inevitable that certain headlines will make their mark before I can avert my eyes, or that I hear the distant babbling of a talking-head while searching for more palatable TV fare.

And what I read and hear of late is that we Democrats are “nervous” about our chances in November, a statement usually coupled with an analysis that our fears are the result of a waning enthusiasm for our candidates.

Although I realize that most of you out there in the news media won’t recognize the phrase “setting the record straight”, no less it’s function, I will forge ahead and set the record straight for you nonetheless.

Our support of our candidates, Obama and Biden – along with our party members running for other offices – has never been stronger. As for our enthusiasm, a quick check of the facts (yet another concept you are unfamiliar with) amply demonstrates that record-breaking campaign contributions, numbers of on-the-ground volunteers, and participants at Obama-Biden events continues unabated.

What makes us “nervous” is not our inability to win this election fair-and-square, but the fact that the possibility of yet another stolen election always looms large. It’s happened to us before, and we rightfully fear it could happen again.

Of course, the very idea that elections can be stolen – through voting machines that have been proven to be hackable in order to manipulate vote counts, through voter caging, through a myriad of clearly immoral as well as illegal practices – even being a possibility in our country is deplorable.

But what is even more deplorable is the fact that this state of affairs exists because you, the “news media” – who, by virtue of your occupational responsibilities, have a duty to inform – have consistently refused to bring this situation to the attention of your audiences.

In addition to the aforementioned, there is the added nerve-jangling caused by your habit of replacing actual news with political opinion – opinion proffered by people who blatantly lie, mis-state the facts, mis-quote the Democratic contenders, repeat political myths that have been debunked time and again, and yet go unchallenged by you, the very people whose job it is question the veracity of such statements.

Add to the mix the fact that the “news” is no longer disseminated by impartial journalists, but has become just another “product” to be sold to the public-at-large by the corporations who own the print and TV news media, and have an agenda of their own – such as government contracts that could disappear if telling the truth means stepping on the wrong political toes.

If we Democrats appear to be “nervous”, it is not because we don’t believe wholeheartedly in our candidates’ superior abilities to not only lead a nation, but to garner the votes necessary to put them in a position to do so.

What we do fear is a citizenry that, thanks to your lack of responsible reporting, will not only go to the polls totally misinformed about the issues of the day and the positions of the candidates, but a populace that will base their votes on the misrepresentations, the unsubstantiated rumors, and outright distortions of the truth that you have encouraged your viewers and readers to accept as fact.

Are we nervous? At times, yes, we are. We get nervous when we contemplate the possibility of another administration that will defy the rule of law, while you sit silent; another disastrous war that you will cheerlead rather than question; another four years of a government that will operate behind closed doors to the nation’s detriment, while you fill your columns and your airtime with the inconsequential nonsense that has turned the once-honorable title of journalist into an epithet to be hurled at the lazy hack, the sell-out, the Judas Goat.

But again, let me set the record straight. While we Democrats may appear to be nervous, we are not discouraged, nor beaten, nor lacking in determination. We will see Barack Obama sworn-in as the next President. We will see this country handed back to its rightful owners – we, The People. We will achieve all that we have set out to do, and we will ultimately prevail.

But the fact remains: it is a national shame that when we look back on this victory years from now, we will inevitably remark that we accomplished our goal not due to the professional reporters in our news media, but in spite of them.

3. Agree, and recommended.
The Press was a different creature in the time of Watergate.

It was effective, if establishmentarian, and occasionally bold and ground-breaking.

Much, much less so now.

Great analysis of what's eating at us as individuals and as a nation, Nance. Also I agree with your political prediction.

6. Great piece, Nance. I noticed yesterday that all the "news" shows were
issuing qualifiers about how the "lipstick" story was just silly, there were important matters going on in this country, it wasn't really an issue, etc., and then proceeded to spend another 20 minutes talking about the "lipstick" story.

This is so that when they go into the inevitable "navel-gazing" that will take place after the election, they can say, "But we told you it was a stupid story and there were real issues to discuss."

The media is lost.

I am listening to Sibelius tonight BECAUSE I REFUSE TO WATCH ANYTHING ON TV. I might break the screen, and then my husband would get cranky.

This election, even more than the last two, has made the complete failure of journalism in this country blatantly obvious. It's awful.

And, Nance, thanks for saying EXACTLY what I've been feeling all day and better than I could ever say it. :applause:

To the point at hand: I was pleased to recommend your thread here tonight, as on most nights, and it's my wish that lurking freepers' blood pressure rise to explosive levels when they read your posts.

You write from the left but you write persuasively. It's the opposite model from the screamers in St. Paul last week who scream from the right and frighten even their own kind.

67. Hey, glad you mentioned Nina Simone.
I was trolling YouTube recently for Cotton Eyed Joe videos and came across one of Nina singing--Cotton Eyed Joe! Wowser--sent chills up my spine. That lady was awesome!! Reason for my search was I recalled many, many years ago my sister (rest her soul) had a record of someone (a country/western dude) singing Cotton Eyed Joe and it prompted me to check out the Google, which led me to YT and Nina. The song brings back wonderful memories of my sister, but what should I see but a myriad of videos of people dancing the Cotton Eyed Joe. Something of a phenomenon that I was unaware of! I'm strongly considering having a knee replacement just so I can learn the dance. Looks like a heckuva lot of fun and a major diversion from the Media Mess Nance wrote about so eloquently.

Might mention I really dig Bonnie Raitt, too.

Keep the faith, everybody!

26. Yep. "In spite of them."
I've been hearing the word "nervous" here and there on the news channels. I'm also hearing the words "worried," "disoriented" and even "flummoxed." Sometimes it's one pundit, and sometimes it's another pundit. Sometimes it's CNN and sometimes it's MSNBC. Sometimes it's some other news channel.

When this happens -- when certain words or phrases suddenly begin popping up in the vocabulary of the various "pundits" and "journalists" -- I know that sumpthin's up. I know that somebody wants me to think certain things. I know that the media is trying to manipulate me once again. I know too that sometimes it's nothing but a set-up; a preface to an "event" that hasn't happened yet but it's going to, and when that event happens, the reason for those special "words" and "phrases" becomes clear.

In this case, the goal is to discourage us and depress us.

The fake liberal media aka the right-wing media wants to dampen enthusiasm and depress the vote.

Ain't gonna happen.

39. I love having you here and would love it if you would visit from time to time,
but you have a duty, a sacred obligation, to go national. You are our conscience, a conscience once held most recently by such as Molly Ivins but even earlier, held by many of our founding fathers. Yes, Nancy, I am comparing you to our national fathers. You're voice must go beyond this wonderful burg. You must be heard nationally and preferably internationally. It is imperative that I be able to say, "Yeah, I remember when she started out on DU." You are not meant to be here Nance. You should be working directly with our next president or even better, afflicting greatly our next president.

I am not blowing smoke here. Your prodigious talents and moral standing are such that you must go out there and help frame the debate, frame the importance of the most important election in our American History.

You have a solomn duty to speak. You must speak and not just to us. Find a way to be elevated to where you must be. Now, please.

Please submit your powerful writings to Molly Ivins' beloved "The Texas Observer"; to "American Prospect"; to "Mother Jones", and other progressive periodicals. We'll overcome our selfishness in wanting to keep you here at "home"; our pride will show no bounds whenever we read a strong, factual, persuasive missive from your pen in a regional or national printing.

Let us know what we can do to help you seek a wider audience. Our penchant for sending your every comment to our entire address book by e-mail should help a little. We love your voice; speak louder, please.

43. Oh yeah
The news media has been cowed by right wing extremists and the compensatory power of the corporate elites that dictate the way the news is slanted. For me the tip off was the Clinton witch hunts of the 90s. I put on CNN yesterday for the first time since 1998, and they were doing a Republican campaign ad disguised as a story about Six Gun Sarah Palin.
Why isn't Joe Biden getting the same coverage? Maybe because he's not insane. That Orwell guy was onto something.

after watching all the apologists in the media for Sarah Palin's fumbles on major foreign policy issues in her interview. CNN's David Gergen was saying it's okay that she didn't know what the Bush Policy was because "a lot of us in the media don't regularly use the phrase anymore" (paraphrasing). I try to be objective and give people the benefit of the doubt, but it's tough sometimes.

58. As someone who considers herself a Journalist
I lost my respect for the media when Clinton was impeached ... Print media was my home, and I loved my little small town news rag. But now it is part of a corporation, and they have cut the budget so much that what took 7 reporters to do ten years ago, has now been reduced to 2. We used to have "beats" and each reporter had credibility with sources specific to said beats... no more. It is now just enough to cover meetings and regurgitate the press releases. They have fired or laid off all the reporters with the knowledge and seniority, and filled the newsroom with college grads who are from outside the town they are covering, who have no knowledge of how our small mountain shire realy works...

I freelance for a reason...integrity. I take pride in my work and my ability to tell a story.

too bad our "watchdog" was given prozac and tamed by money.

love your words, Nance....can we get this printed somewhere? please? send it to KO and see if he'l read it on the air!

A profession I entered proudly more than 40 years ago -- and I am in despair at what has happened to it. I used to be proud of what I did. I'm still proud of what I accomplished, which was quite a lot, but I no longer proudly call myself a journalist, lest I be lumped in with the hacks and frauds that populate the arena today.

I began my career in a small, very corrupt city. I exposed a lot of corruption. At one point, when being introduced at a "press night" at a local service organization, I was introduced as "the man who can see through doors."

You would not believe the number of people who are willing to expose corruption if only the media had the balls to report it.

I always followed the old dictum that my job as a journalist was to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

I have a few colleagues from the early days who are still working -- and they are in the same despair as I am. They hate what their organizations have become. They are just hanging on until they can retire.

61. Gladly the 100th favorite vote.
Yes, Nancy...it will be in spite of the tainted bias newscasters. "Setting the Record Straight", frankly is a term I have long forgotten in mainstream news, Sadly!

I think what they interpret as us being "nervous" is us recoiling in horror with their attempt to blast an even bigger hole that this country is already in so we sink even further than we now find ourselves, collectively. They are not satisfied with how contemptable our standing is in the world--they won't be satisfied until they've reached the grave-cold, slimy bottom of that hole.

63. The MSM
is not only bought completely by their corporate owners, they are LAZY. They don't go out in the middle of the night to try to find the actual story. They google, the search web sites. Sometimes you have to actually go out and TALK to people and follow leads.

65. Their plan is so transparent
They are planting the seed now so when they steal the election in November they can contend it was a "close race" when in reality it's probably an embarassingly large margin in favor of Obama/Biden (from republicans that are disgusted with their direction their party took).

On a side note, I hate most of MSM, but I love the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC! :applause:

70. Preach it!

Nance, you nailed it.
