If this clip is any indication of Palin's grasp on the issues, of her vacuousness, Biden is gonna eat her alive. Every response is about drilling. She really has very little substance, and didn't really even answer any questions. Palin paled in comparison to Napolitano.

11. I've been thinking about the debate

Now we know that in substance and style all intelligent people will watch the debate and undoubtedly see that Palin isn't fit to be on the same stage as Joe Biden. After watching clips from Palin's performance at the convention it is clear that the gop is going to write some one line zingers aimed at getting replayed over and over in the media. It won't matter that the zingers are a deflection from the issues or not relevant to the discussion other than to be insulting, the media will rave over the snark that is written for her.

Biden has a cutting humor, but he really needs to be prepared to have similar bumper sticker type zingers to hurl at Palin/McCain and the gop along the lines of his classic "noun, a verb, and 9/11".

If she was such a great energy advocate, why did she not put the increasing oil royalties towards alternative energy projects? This was an opportunity lost by Palin, to demonstrate a commitment to energy independence rather than merely promising it.

edit: p.s. After watching the Green Room clip, I was annoyed enough by her obfuscation that I was compelled to leave a comment.

She's very personable, well-spoken (no Bush, here) and telegenic, but seems thin on issues. For instance, I have to wonder... if she is such an advocate for developing domestic supplies of energy to lessen our reliance on foreign sources, why did she opt to dispose of the increased oil royalty revenues as rebates to the citizens of Alaska, instead of putting that money towards developing forward-looking renewable, alternative energy sources? Doling out the money as royalty checks seems to be exceedingly short-sighted -- though it does help explain her high approval rating in Alaska.

And, ugh, the full Rose show was even more painful, with Palin doing her One Trick Pony "energy" act; again compelling me to comment...

The question is about quality education, and Palin topic hops to her one trick... drill, drill, drill.

To see how transparently tunnel-visioned Palin is, consider... If oil money is needed to improve the schools in Alaska, as she states, then why is she doling out increased oil royalty checks to Alaska citizens instead of using those funds to shore-up the school system? Oopsy.

Ouch... And she does it again. She rolls out her son as a political tool, and then says "every elected official should be doing everything they can to secure these United States", and makes it about "energy." So, ok, why didn't Palin use the increased oil revenues to shore-up the Alaska National Guard? Recent reporting lists Alaska's National Guard as facing a personnel crisis. only not usually on a national state. "Beauty Queens" who never get beyond the pageant, whose entire sense of self is connected tightly with their looks. They never have to develop much of a personality or think about things because their good looks will always trump everything else.

What's really distressing, but directly connected to the Beauty Queen Syndrome, is that she has the intellectual substance of someone just out of junior college. A rather second-rate junior college at that, and who didn't take any classes that required any effort besides showing up. But manages to think she got a good education. And so has absolutely no idea what really does constitute a good education, and honestly doesn't think that schools need to be funded any better than they were when she went, because after all, "We didn't have computers and fancy labs and we got a good education, didn't we?" kind of mentality.

Take this Charlie Rose interview, as an example. Rose asks Napolitano about education, and she goes into great deal in her response and followups.

And then Rose directs the education topic to Palin, and she immediately veers off into the need to drill, drill, drill -- and Charlie doesn't bother to ask any followup question on education. Palin skated without addressing education.

She starts fidgeting immediately and tells Charlie that it's so complicated that she wouldn't ordinarily even start to get into it in an interview "like this," explains that her approach is to assemble a task force to look into other task forces' efforts, and then redirects the question over to Napolitano, in order to get out of the hole and avoid any followups. Tell me... what did Palin say, at all, about health care?

This last tactic is something that Biden needs to be aware of, and prepare for. Don't jump in and bail her out when she tries one of these redirects; instead, respond that you'd like her to continue with her thoughts; that you don't what to interrupt her and will comment after she's finished.

Palin is a complete lightweight on the issues -- though her media skills help to compensate.

p.s. People need to see this interview. Not just to see what an intellectual fraud Palin is, but to see her in comparison to someone who *is* qualified and has some depth, Janet Napolitano.

She and my fundie nephew (they, too, speak in tongues) have lost their house in the mortgage fiasco due partially to their careless and greedy choices and are about to lose their business for similar reasons. Family have given them money repeatedly and she spends it to get her hair and nails done. My sister counted 50 pairs of fancy underwear in one of her girl's drawers when she was doing laundry one day. 50? My kids are lucky if they have five clean pairs of skivvies! We all tried to get them to sell the house sooner, talk with the mortgage company, move to a cheaper area, see a credit counselor -they went to their pastor instead - stop spending on their cards, and/or get a part time job to help cover their debt. But, when I spoke with her last, she said God had a plan for them. It's nuts. And this Palin lady is scary. This dependence on God to save you is irresponsible, to say the least.
