My family knew someone who had an abortion after learning the baby would have Down Syndrome
This was 10 years ago. This woman was married, lower-middle class and did not have health insurance. In her family there was her, her husband, two other young children, and no extended family with means or the ability to be caregivers. She would have never been able to afford a lifetime of medical bills and dropping back to only one household income so the other parent could stay home with the child. So she made the somber decision to have an abortion. It was her decision, not her husband's and not the government's.

Unlike Governor Palin, she didn't have government funded free health care, money in the bank and a large extended family to help out.

1. Yep. And that's why it should be up to each woman.

2. I don't blame her for doing so. She would only make matters
worse for the remainder of the family. Why should they all suffer? I'm glad she was able to do so even though she probably felt badly about it for a while. It's better to be able to care for those already born.

3. Palin and Mcnuts would make sure
that your friend would not have the choice. AND they would provide no government support for caring for the child after it was born. True compassionate conservatism.

4. It has to be a tough decision for any woman but ultimately
each woman should make that decision with her family. McCain/Palin will put the Government in every womans medical life.

5. I said the same thing to my husband.. We would not be able to survive
and try to provide for the child we have now.. so, I would have to make the same decision.

6. My family knows someone who didn't
It has been 20 years.

I feel sorry for the other 3 children who were born healthy, but will not go to college because the drain of supporting that one child consumed all the resources for that entire family.

It is a cruel calculus, but one which each parent has to make:

Shall I sacrifice my healthy children?

8. Absolutely. The mother has to also consider the impact
of any decision upon the other children in the family. Woman must be free to determine what they think best under their individual circumstances according to their own beliefs and consciences, and considering the family that they are responsible for.

12. My mother . . . .
in the days before Roe v. Wade.

Must have been 68, 69 or early 70.

Me: "Why does mom have to go to the hospital?" Dad:"Female trouble."

Pieces flowed in later. Still too young to understand, but with a good memory. Not sure it all came together until I was studying RvW in Con Law.

My mom was an early career mother, going back to working as a nurse in 1965 once my youngest sister was in school.

Her choice.
