I think McCain plans to step down shortly after he's sworn in and give the presidency to Palin

He's automatically given historic status as being responsible to making a woman the 1st US President ever.

Furthermore, Palin, never once having to explain her views to the general public, is now given 4 years to start implementing her radical right agenda.

It's the only thing that really explains their friggin' arrogance over their intent to keep the press away from Palin for as long as possible.

I doubt he would step down willingly, but I bet his health would suddenly becomes an issue of debate immediately after taking office. Like, all of a sudden all the media is talking about whether McCain is capable of leading the country.

The extremos definitely see Palin as a back-door path to the presidency. They know they can't win a direct election, but this might be one way to get total power.

6. the more the Media pushes for access, they more they'll spin in as Palin attacks

Tweety go into a huge argument with Pat Buchanan over media access to Palin, said " America has a right to know"! and Pat claimed that they're not going to be able to talk to her, because its't necessary!

7. no, he wants it too badly

All he's done in the last 9 years has been aiming at getting him on that podium yesterday, and on the Capitol one in January. Nothing short of death will stop him - and I'm not sure about that. When you sell your soul you want to make sure you get something for it.

I voted for him in the 2000 primary: I disagreed with most of his positions then, but I felt he had more integrity than Bush. It's all been downhill since then.
