Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 09:55 AM by beac
She supported her bar-owning cronies against the Wasilla chief of police on this. He was concerned about all the drunk driving. His 'lack of support' for her in this and some NRA-backed issues lead to her firing him.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5713866&page=1

After taking over as Mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Palin fired the longtime local police chief. The former police chief, Irl Stambaugh says he was fired because he stepped on the toes of Palin's campaign contributors, including bar owners and the National Rifle Association.

Stambaugh's lawyer, William Jermain, says the chief tried to move up the closing hours of local bars from 5 a.m. to two a.m. after a spurt of drunk driving accidents and arrests.

"His crackdown on that practice by the bars was not appreciated by her and that was one reason she terminated Irl," said Jermain.

I'd think M.A.D.D. would be VERY interested in this!

Jeezus, I am from WI and even we have enough sense to close the bars at 2am (2:30 on weekends). Sometimes we even go straight home after that;)

4. I've heard that they are open all night in
Alaska during the summer (when the sun is up). I've also heard they have a lot of violence, as a result.

5. It was 5am!!!
I remember when I was stationed at Ft Greeley Alaska, there was a small town named Delta Junction off post. The main bar would close at 5am to clean up and get ready for the breakfast crowd at 6 am.

This was back in '81-'82, just when M.A.D.D. was getting started.

7. When MADD has pushed the definition of "drunk"
.....to a couple of beers, and is driving (pun very much intended) incessantly to make it a sip, why should they care how long bars are open? I've lived in multiple countries and multiple US states, with closing times as early as 10.30 and as late as...well never - 24 hr bars. The only thing bar hours change is how late the party types start drinking, not how drunk they get.

Sure use it against Palin if you'll think it'll stick, but not much meat there when examined.

16. The point is little Mrs 'Super Mom' protected her cronies
instead of the safety of the good citizens of Wasilla. Goes to her credibility as 'standing up against special interests' and helps bust the myth that she will 'fight for you!'

She wants to run as a 'Supermom' so lets see what the M.A.D.D. mothers have to say about that!

19. And this is in spite of alcohol being a MAJOR problem in Alaska.
I read somewhere that at any given time, 1 in 11 drivers on Alaskan roads are drunk. Combine that with the alcoholism rates among the native populations, instances of rape being much higher than the national average, and high instances of domestic violence - things that are proven to increase with increased or intensified alcohol use.

This was the opposite of what was good for the community.
This was all about helping bar owners make more money while they sling the last legal drug.

JUNEAU, Alaska (June 19, 2008) – Governor Sarah Palin (R) on Monday signed into law a measure that will save countless lives by requiring all convicted drunk drivers to install an alcohol ignition interlock device in their vehicles. H.B. 19, which passed both the Senate and the House unanimously, will make it more difficult for convicted drunk drivers to repeat this deadly crime. When this law goes into effect on January 1, 2009, Alaska will join seven other states furthering MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving by requiring alcohol ignition interlock devices for all convicted drunk drivers, including New Mexico, Arizona, Illinois, Louisiana, Washington, Nebraska and Colorado.

38. There is plenty of material for that...

I think Todd's membership in the AIP, and Sarah's role as a stealth candidate for them is an instant disqualification.

But keeping bars open isn't going to upset non-drinking moralists or people who frequent bars.

Some fundies could see it as a plus, since it increases tax revenue obtained from sinners.

28. I thought the anti-drinking crowd was Republican (the religious right)?

It is no coincidence that MADD came of power under Ronald Reagan.

And as long as you're talking about helping out ones cronies, do you know why MADD became such a force while so many comunity organizers fail? Because (1) the religious right gave them numbers, and (2) the insurance companies gave them money.

I know a handful of MADD officers, and 100% of them are members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. I interviewed for a job with the insurance lobby and was told MADD is their #1 expense and now horribly the insurance companies cook the statistics on drunk driving.

And perhaps you don't realize this, but MADD is HATED in rural America. Where there is only one safe road in-and-out of town, where there is NO public transportation, where there are no taxis, where there is nothing in the world to do but go to church or go to the bar, MADD has forced everyone to the church.

MADD has been one of the biggest causes of the conservatism that has taken over this country the past three decades. My parents were a fun-loving couple until MADD made them afraid to go anywhere and do anything. Actually, they were still a fun-loving couple, but they absolutely would not go into town after dark for fear of the police.

You people with no experience living in the country, the real country not some fucking suburb, have no idea what you have done to those people. Obama had it only half right. They are not clinging to their guns and bibles out of bitterness over losing jobs. It's the country! There was no manufacturing in the first place. They are clinging to their guns and bibles because MADD took away their alcohol.

34. And so many rural folks blame it on "nanny-state liberals".

Apparently that meme has worked so well we are seeing DUers fall for it. No, MADD was never liberal or progressive. As you say, they are repressive and puritan. They just found a way to package their temperance without the religious message to fool people.

And, heck, in the true rural areas I expect they are causing more deaths than they are saving. I know in the county where I grew up they have two or three traffic fatalities every year now. Those numbers used to be reversed: one fatality every two or three years. I suspect that is because people are driving the dangerous backroads to avoid the drunk-driving roadbocks. I know most fatalities down there are now on the backroads. Seem to recall the fatalities being mostly on the highways when I was growing up.

31. Even here is Anchorage the bars close at 2:45
We have problems here with people partying and then driving drunk 45 minutes out to Wasilla to continue drinking, many times on very icy roads. Additionally, in Wasilla you can drive ATV's and snowmachines all over the place. People do this drunk and end up with severe head injuries, especially teenagers. Traumatic Brain injury is a significant and growing problem all over rural Alaska.

I have heard that very soon we will be learning a lot more about Palin's time as Wasilla mayor. Obama's people are in Wasilla reading through documents because the information available on the internet is very limited.

37. Sarah Palin did this because she cares!
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 11:46 AM by TwoSparkles
Palin's husband was convicted on a DUI charge.

Come on folks! It is obvious that she wanted the drinking
and partying to go on, until 5:00 a.m.---so she wouldn't have
to wake up in the middle of the night to retrieve her drunk-off-his
ass husband from his musty barstool.

By keeping him in the bar, until at least 5:00 a.m.--she gets that
few extra hours of shut-eye, her husband gets a ride home and no one is killed!

If you people weren't so selfish, you could see this!
