I admit that I've spent more time on this board in the days since Palin was announced than I did in the 2 months prior to that. I just had a hard time getting all that worked up about McCain alone for some reason. Part of it was that Obama was moving to the center, and I just wasn't as worked up about the election as I should have been.
But now we've got an honest-to-goodness cultural warrior in Palin who likely has far less knowledge of world affairs than even Bush did when he ran the first time. And the hated Falwell wing of the Repukes is ecstatic and gathering for battle. And when they gear up for battle, so do I. And judging by this board and elsewhere on the internet, I am not alone.
A month from now this moose hunter from Alaska is (hopefully) going to have to be answering questions about nuances of Middle East politics and how strict penalties she supports for rape victims who have abortions. I admit I have been shocked by just how ecstatic our moronic public can get over someone reading someone else's speech, but the debate won't be so easy for her.
And even if she does well, it's clear that McCain has chosen to veer to the hard right and I like our chances with a unified Democratic party fighting against that. If Palin had more moderate politics that appealed to independents then I'd be more worried. As things stand now, even if she does well in the debate, that will just mean she's a skilled politician who wants to take us to the hard right. And that will energize a lot of people in opposition, and I just can't see it working after 8 years of Bush.
