Stupid Question for DUers: How does McCain get rid of Palin if he wants
Has this ever happened before?

How do you drop a VP candidate once you have announced your pick?

1. See McGovern-Eagleton, 1972
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 07:28 PM by Richardo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Eagleton

Here's the most telling paragraph:
Having been declined by the "name" Senators, McGovern turned to lesser-known candidates, and Eagleton, who had opposed the Vietnam War, was selected on July 14 with only a minimal background check. Eagleton made no mention of his earlier (Psychiatric) hospitalizations. Newspapers soon revealed them. McGovern and Eagleton initially joked about the case with Eagleton saying he would undergo a psychiatric examination if other candidates (e.g., Nixon) would do the same. But the charges kept coming.

McGovern said he would back Eagleton “1000%”, but on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and, after new search by McGovern, was replaced by Kennedy in-law Sargent Shriver.

8. McCain is between a rock and a hard place
He has to disassociate himself from any Palin departure.

Portraying himself and Palin as victims of the "Rabid Liberal Media" is his best route

9. Maybe she could make a press announcement: those creepy dems are harrassing my daughter too much
and I must end all of this now. As much as I wanted
to be a vice president of this great country... these
nasty democraps are giving my sweet daughter a nervous
breakdown. Good luck, John.

30. Right, Sarah will say that family comes first and she doesn't want to be a distraction
She better announce her withdrawal Tuesday so as to give McCain a chance to announce the new Veep on Wednesday.

14. She says, "I've become too much of a distraction",
or "I need to be with my family during this challenging time", then blames the liberal media and evil democrats for the horrible treatment she has received. After she loses the next election for governor, she becomes a talking-head political analyst on one of the big cable networks.

Basically, it's better for everyone if they make it look like it was her decision, even though we all know it wasn't.

I think she could pull off all three? Then McSame can come out with righteous indignation, slamming said "evil democrats" for being mean hypocrites.

16. She hasn't been officially nominated yet.

Get the 'lockstep' RNC delegates to reject her nomination. Have someone else nominated and seconded. Done. Nothing sounds too crazy for repukes anymore.

The GOP blames it on the relentless liberal bloggers, and vow to bring more control to the interwebs.

25. The more I think about this, the more I love it
because either way is pretty great.

Either she stays and we get to enjoy allllllll the stuff that comes seeping out about her over the next several weeks until you don't even see her in public anymore.

Or she goes and there's the disgrace of McCain having chosen SO incredibly badly and having to re-do his VP pick. THAT sucks, big-time.

So either way, I'm happy, LOL!

32. Not so easily.
Not easily.

But if you want an interesting take on a historic example, a candidate in 20th century history left it up to the VP himself to make the final decision, and nobody really knew what he was going to do until it he did it.

What he did, of course, was to give the famous "Checkers" speech, and become the vice president: Richard Nixon. (See the pretty interesting book "Nixonland" for details.)

However, Sarah Palin is no Richard Nixon.

Think about that statement for a moment.
