ABC Confirms Palin was a member of AIP (Alaskan Independence Party)
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 07:18 PM by Cush
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/members-of-frin.html

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

She doesn't know what Palin's position was.

"It never came up in conversation," Clark recalls. "But when she joined the party, our platform was right under her nose"

185. This simply HAS to be a disqualification. She is a model of the GOP.
It's almost like Palin is a picture of everything that is wrong with the GOP.

Here we see all of the simultaneous contradictory beliefs the GOP has within its party, all rolled up into a single, self-contradictory person.
It's unbelievable.

Its a free country but you gotta figure belonging to such a party advocating the breakup of the union sorta disqualifies you from ever being president of what would be the remainder of that union, dontcha think?

135. That's pretty accurate - but with the stubbornness of republicans....
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 11:22 PM by George II
...I'd have to take the "over" and figure sometime before Friday. Of course, it depends on how they calculate the embarassment of going through the formal nomination and confirmation on Wednesday and then withdrawing the formal nominee. The "under" would presume that they have the common sense to dump her before they go through the formalities on Wednesday. But that's a mighty steep assumption. Common sense hasn't been a republican trait recently.

Either way, it's almost 100% certain that she won't make it to the general election on November 4.

The smart thing to do will be to drop her from the ticket. I think there was already a lot of skepticism and this is why the Republican convention has been so curtailed. There is no room for dissent.

If they don't take her off the ticket, McCain will go down in glorious flames. I hope they leave her on. Too bad this didn't come out until AFTER the convention!!!!

If all that is reported is true, there would be no question, in any one's mind, that he should be fired and the Governor wouldn't have to send surreptitious emails and send the 'First Dude' to talk to the commander. They are not mutually exclusive.

17. Last straw
She doesn't want to be part of the nation; but she is willing to run it should McCain pass on? She had NO BUSINESS accepting this nominaton. NONE.

I can't even figure out a way to make this news sound normal. Miss Alaska First is pretending to go along with McCain's Country First campaign promise?

IS MCCAIN OUT OF HIS FREAKING MIND? I don't think anything has upset me this whole campaign season as much as the idea that if we lost as democrats (bad as that would be), the danger now is that if McCain doesn't recover from his next inevitable cancer bout, we will have this beeyouch as our freaking leader of the free world.

Even if he is alive, do I want him sending someone with these views of what it means to be an American to negotiate on my behalf with the rest of the world? Honestly, I don't think so. I'm an independent, not some uberly overly patriotic 24/7 flag waving kind of older woman, but this is repugnant to me. Has outraged me more than I though possible.

Get out of my face Palin, and keep working on getting out of my country. No, you don't have to feel the same way I do about America; but don't you dare try to run it for me, feeling as you do.

18. So she was advocating illegal activity?
Unilaterial secession by one state is against federal law, as per the 1869 U.S. Supreme Court case Texas v. White. Mutually agreeable secession between the states through constitutional amendment was left open by the court as probably legal. So was Sarah Palin supporting the idea of illegal unilaterial secession by Alaska or mutual secession by constitutional amendment? Either way, it looks pretty bad for her to be a member of a kook, fringe organization.

Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 09:31 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
But taking overt action to unilaterally secede from the union IS illegal under federal law. My question is if she was advocating illegal activity, not whether her party membership in itself was illegal.

In other words, I'm not talking about party membership or the freedom of association. I'm talking about activity. I'm not even necessarily saying that Palin is violating the law if she promotes secession. But I'm asking if she's promoting illegal acts taken by others in furtherance of illegal secession.

The Democrats used to be the party of secession, now it seems that the Republicans are, why else would they have nominated someone who supports Alaskan independence to the office of VP. They must want to see the USA split up into many smaller countries and go with some kind of model based on the European Union.

209. That's something that amazes me about Freepers and other righties.
No matter how bad the revelation, no matter how horrifying the behavior, by Palin or any other Republican, the response is always, always "I like her even better now!"

Good things make them like her better. Neutral things make them like her better. Terrible, horribly un-American things make them like her much better. Where is the logic here?

It reminds me of those "the world will end on June 20" wacko groups. When the world does not in fact end on June 20, the reaction from the group is always exactly the same: "That proves we were right!"

151. no where near sedition
it is perfectally constitutional for individual states to break away from the union so long as they do not do so to form a rival union. An independent Alaska would just be one state leaving the USA. The new country would not even share a border with the USA. This is a huge conflict of interest in my opinion. I personally would not vote for a VP who advocates that her home state break away from the USA.

The baby had to be a "natural-born citizen" of the Republic of Alaska to be able to run for King of the Republic of Alaska in 35 years.

Is this a hoot, or what?

So how many posters here are paid Obama employees? What is up with you guys, I really hope you are paid employees because I really can't believe in my heart you all are so ignorant and rude. Sounds like the AIP party has some interesting ideas like empowering the people. Private property ownership sounds like a really horrible thing. Oh wait Socialist Obama and his cultists are against that. One other question, if Obama wins are we eventually all going to have to drink pink cool aid? I guess that would solve the poplulation problem.

Posted by: Pennsylvania Proud | Sep 1, 2008 8:42:23 PM

Sounds to me like the AIP does indeed have some interesting ideas, like SECEDING FROM THE UNITED STATES.

Goodbye, Sarah. She won't be speaking on Wednesday. She's finished.

79. So "Country First" means which to her USA or alaska?
In the second video on the Daily Kos link, the Vice Chairman of the Alaska Independence Party says that Palin "was an AIP member before she got the job as a mayor of a small town. That was a non-partisan job. But to get along and to go along she eventually joined the Republican party where she has all kinds of problem with her ethics." It sounds as if she made the switch to the Republican party for political expediency.

102. What is Funny about the AIP is that they claim that the US took control over a load of land that ...
They now cannot use:

General Assembly Resolution 626 (VII). Right to exploit freely Natural Wealth and Resources, 21 December 1952 indicates that because "...the right of peoples freely to use and exploit their natural wealth and resources is inherent in their sovereignty, and is, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, ..... (2) Further recommends that all member States refrain from acts, directly or indirectly, designed to impede the exercise of the sovereignty of any state over its natural resources."

Ultra-Secretive Right-Wing Group Met In Minn. To Vet Palin
Posted by DogPoundPup on Mon Sep-01-08 11:17 AM
posted by Max Blumenthal on 09/01/2008 @ 08:37am

Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.

CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.

would be pretty damning. She doesn't have to be in a leadership position to be too Reich Wing for all but the most extreme of even the Reich Wing it's self.
It's pretty tough to get even the states rights types to tolerate anything like succession and a VP on record as saying she'd use the position to advocate for Alaska.

This is a national office Palin is not onboard with being responsible to all the citizens of our nation, just Alaska and far out loonies and McCain is utterly incompetent and not fit for office.

155. States Rights strategy
this is to get the support of folks who like states rights. She will support states rights to choose if they remain in the USA, to choose whether or not cannabis is legal (like in Alaska) to decide about medical marijuana, to decide about prostitution, to decide about teaching creationism and to decide about abortion once McCains nominee to the supreme court overturns Roe V Wade. McCain knew this in advance and it is part of his strategy. Do you really believe that he didn't know about this? He knew and he sees it as an asset. If we attack her for it we come off as anti states rights. That is their real strategy. They will use our criticism of this to say we are anti constitutional and anti American.

Wiki - Secession in the United States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession_in_the_United_States

In November 2006, the Supreme Court of Alaska held that secession was illegal, Kohlhaas vs. State, and refused to permit an otherwise proper Initiative to be presented to the people of Alaska for a vote.

-

Kohlhaas v. State (11/17/2006) sp-6072, 147 P3d 714

THE SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF ALASKA

INTRODUCTION

Scott Kohlhaas drafted an initiative calling for
Alaskas secession from the United States or, in the alternative,
directing the state to work to make secession legal, and
submitted the initiative, along with one hundred signatures, to
the lieutenant governor.

198. U.S. Supreme Court case Texas v. White (1869)
The Supreme Court declared that the United States was a "perpetual union" and that no state could unilaterally secede. The decision was based on the U.S. Constitution and the Articles of Confederation that preceded it, which referred to the establishment of a "perfect union" which could not be changed. They did however allow the possibly of mutual secession, if the idea were agreeable among the several states and they convened a constitutional convention and added a new amendment allowing a particular state seeking secesson to secede.

which advocated the secession of Delaware from the union.

It could be that Palin exhibits an absence of faith and interest in the responsibilities and conditions of this world because she belongs to a church tradition that is contemptuous of this world, concentrating instead on the next world.

In any case, this hasn't been quite the week for the Republicans they might have hoped for.

Friends have told me that DU used to have a good reputation as a progressive blog but has gone downhill this last year with many good people banned or leaving.

we will see.

Thanks for asking

the leader of the AIP is currently searching for the old enrollment papers to find her name since many members have come forward to say she was at their meetings. So the relevance is there.

Further more what does it say about her to not warn her husband about a group that is basically treasonous in lieu of her role in the government and her enforcement of Federal Laws.

223. Do you have links on them searching for the papers?
That would be perfect if it were the case.

234. Not necessarily. Those groups are national security risks and there's
no way to determine the depth of his involvement especially if she comes home with any national secrets of some nature. Shit like that haunts the candidate.

217. I hate to defend Palin and the AIP but...
The AIP hasn't been seriously about seccession for a long time. I'm sure it comes up at their little meetings, but I would guess since the founder of the party Joe Vogler was murdered in the 80's they haven't been serious about it.

There is a large contingent of people here who look at how Alaska became a state, and see that under international laws it wasn't exactly legal. Under the UN Charter the people of Alaska should have voted whether or not to join the union. There was an election held, but natives couldn't vote and soldiers of the US Army were not only allowed to vote but paid $5 by the government to vote yes. They should not have been allowed to vote at all as they were not citizens of the area. I would bet that if only citizens of the territory were allowed to vote it would have gone the other way and AK wouldn't have become a state. If a vote was held today to secceed it would be very interesting. I would guess that we would vote to stay part of the US, but people are weird up here.

And if you ever see registration numbers showing that the AIP is a big party, it isn't. Most registered as AIP meant to register as independent, not as a member of the AIP, I know several people who have done that. And Alaska voters are overwhelmingly independent and non-partisan, I think something over 50% of registered voters do not belong to the Dems or Repubs, although they mostly vote R up here.

I guess I am not really defending anyone, just clarifying that she wasn't a member of some radical group advocating the overthrow of the government or something. But if it hurts McCant's chances in November, it can't be a bad thing that the story is out there.
