The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo

The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo

By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008, 6:20PM

On the same day that the Republicans were forced to dramatically cut back their convention activities, the Palin Meltdown unfolded with extraordinary speed. It's worth pondering the totality of what happened today, in a mere half day...

* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.

* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.

* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes, undercutting her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain's Veep candidate.

* The news broke that Palin's 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain's candidacy.

* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin's own spokesperson hadn't known about it only two days ago.

* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy "last week" -- without saying what day last week he knew about it.

* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin -- now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she'd been picked.

* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska -- a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.

What else will come out today? After all, there are still six hours left until September 2nd...

2. Just watched a long segment on Wolf Blitzer on it.
Nancy Pfotenhauer, "a Senior McCain advisor," claims there is nothing to the Troopergate story and, if I heard her correctly, she claims that aspect was fully vetted before Palin was named as VP candidate. The same segment talked about the daughter's pregnancy (poor girl, I bet she wants to just KILL her mother right now) and Obama got VERY favorable coverage, including video of his full statement saying families and especially children of candidates are off-limits.

They were saying Palin is being defined by news and internet stories, and the Repukes need to get their version of her story out in the convention, pronto.

OOPS. It's blowing up on them. :nuke:

13. She will drop out. There's too much scandal swirling around her and she has no experience
doing anything NEAR what it takes to be POTUS.

I wouldn't be surprised if she's out by the end of the week.. maybe during the convention.
they will blame it on how mean the press is re: Bristol's pregnancy.

15. My goodness, what will we see in this Friday's news dump about Palin?
This is wild!

And I've got to hand it to our Dems; it seems they are prepared to fight and have done their homework.

16. Must be a damn record
Been a player on the national scene for 4 days. Has managed in those 4 days to wrack up more than a half dozen scandals.

And the sad thing is, that list doesn't include Granny-gate or the other nebulous, speculation-filled clouds of suspicion that hover over Palin. This is all tangible, take to the bank, REAL SH*T.

Freepers will continue to love her, but to the rest of the world, Palin is just one great big:

TRAIN WRECK

17. And it's not over yet. One more discovery via the MSM (Washington Post)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/01/AR2008090103148.html?hpid=topnews

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 1 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog.

There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project -- all intended to benefit Palin's town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.

In introducing Palin as his running mate on Friday, Sen. John McCain cast her as a compatriot in his battle against wasteful federal spending. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, hailed Palin as a politician "with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies -- someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past, someone who's stopped government from wasting taxpayers' money."
