STICK TO THE ISSUES! 10 ISSUES DEMOCRATS NEED TO DRIVE HOME FROM NOW ON.
The Republicans want to take this election off the rails and off the issues. Evidence of this is the Palin pick. I was watching This Week this morning and one of the commentators stupidly announced that this election was "not gonna be about issues" but instead about the candidates themselves. He seemed rather happy that actual issues, in his opinion, wouldn't be the focus. Perhaps he knows his party doesn't have a chance to win if we stick to the issues and the connection of McCain to GWB.

So, this Palin pick, as cheap and tawdry as it is, should for the most part be ignored by Democrats, except when it comes to occasionally ducking back in to remind people of her extremist nature. Ignore her until she opens her mouth and then rebut whatever she says with the facts, her extremist record, and the fact she left a town with 5 people living in it 20 million dollars in debt.

We instead should spend the majority of time hitting McCain on:

1. His close ties to GWB and how he has voted with him 95% of the time
2. His capitulation to the far, far right wing of his party and the Rush Limbaugh crowd. He would be taken directions from radio shock jocks and basement dwelling right wing bloggers for the most part. He doesn't have the SPINE to be POTUS.
3. His flip flops and how that ties in to his capitulation on every important decision in this century.
4. His temperament and the fact that he doesn't have it to be POTUS
5. His positions, which seem to either mirror GWB or go far beyond what GWB did, making GWB look reasonable. Especially considering the proposal for corporate tax cuts offered by McCain.
6. The fact that under Republicans, wages ALWAYS stagnant, recession ALWAYS occurs, and we are ALWAYS at war.
7. McCain wants to keep troops in Iraq fighting a ghost for 100 years while bin Laden and Al Quada reconstitutes in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He wants to fight the Pretend War in Iraq instead of actually following bin laden to where he lives in actually doing something to make Americans safe. We would be LESS safe with John McCain in charge. This has to be repeatedly stated.
8. McCain doesn't know about the economy and his running mate doesn't know much about Iraq. We have quite possibly the most dangerous duo in the history of American politics running for office right now. These two, McCain and Palin, are like the blind leading the blind. Dumb and Dumber
9. Intelligence. There needs to be a big deal made about the intelligence of our leaders. GWB was dumb, he had no intellectual curiosity and just believed everything that came his way. Cheney was able to manipulate him to do whatever he wanted. Because Bush is so dumb, he didn't even have the intelligence to even ask the RIGHT questions let alone ANY questions. He has a diminished critical thinking ability. This would be the same with McCain, but even worse. McCain graduated at the rock bottom of the class. He believes everything he hears as long as it is coming from the GOP. He believed Bush and still does. That tells you a lot about his intelligence.
10. Judgment. McCain's judgment has proven, once and for all, to be sorely lacking. On every major decision he has been wrong, including his first would be decision as a president - picking his V.P. McCain wants America to believe that this person, Palin, is capable of stepping in and running a panicked, troubled, economically depressed, war fatigued country in the event his 72 year old heart stops beating. McCain wants us to believe that Palin, a former Miss Wasilla and Sports Reporter, with part time experience being mayor of a town with a population smaller than the number of people who attend my church and governor (for only 18 months) of a state smaller and less significant than Kansas City, Missouri, is capable of facing down Putin, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weaponry, doing something on climate change when she doesn't even believe in it, managing the several agencies which fall under the Executive branch, including the all important Justice Department, when this woman not only does not have a law degree, she has a B.S. in journalism from U of Idaho, not even a government or poli sci major! Yeah fucking right! I have better credentials than this woman. She didn't even know what a Vice President does until recently. She comes across as a total airhead. She has no idea of what's going on in Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia beyond just the talking points she picked up from Fox News. She doesn't know anything. To say that McCain's judgment on picking her, after meeting ONLY ONCE, was sorely lacking is the biggest understatement this decade.

3. Sarah Palin is a distraction
She is meant to take people's eyes off the ball. Obama did some serious teaching last Thursday in his speech. I'm sure he opened some eyes. The Republicans cant have that, so they trotted out the distraction, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain just look at the shiny thing in red pumps, to get people off talking about the issues.

NOT THIS TIME!!

6. Keep hammering it!
Great post!
My fave is # 6: "The fact that under Republicans, wages ALWAYS stagnant, recession ALWAYS occurs, and we are ALWAYS at war."
This is the best argument for all of your co-workers out there who vote for repukes.
What do you get back for your vote? Is this in YOUR best interests?
There's a terrific column in todays NYT from Alan S. Blinder "Is History Siding with Obama's Economic Plan?": an excerpt:
"The stark contrast between the whiz-bang Clinton years and the dreary Bush years is familiar because it is so recent. But while it is extreme, it is not atypical. Data for the whole period from 1948 to 2007, during which Republicans occupied the White House for 34 years and Democrats for 26, show average annual growth of real gross national product of 1.64 percent per capita under Republican presidents versus 2.78 percent under Democrats."

7. Exactly. History has proven that Democrats actually know how to manage and run government
in a way that actually improves the quality of life for average people, grows the economy, and keeps us safe. Can't say the same for Republicans.
