would be her daughter being made to live a lie & feel ashamed of having a child outside of marriage. That, to me, would be one of the most unforgivable aspects of this cover-up. Not a supportive, loving mom with the attitude of "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans" and we will deal with this - but a mom so consumed with her own image that she would shame you into secrecy.
