The overriding theme in all the negative posts about Palin is...
She is NO Hillary, she is NO Michelle, she is NO Elizabeth, she is NO Jill Biden... the list goes on.

She can't hold their water much less be the President of the United States. I think she'd do a better job than McCain (anyone would), but that is setting some really low standards.

I don't think people are meaning to be sexist... it's just that everyone is in shock about this choice. It's a joke!

1. That is true, she's not qualified to be President....
However, a lot of people are using double standards and/or outright sexism to get the point across, they may not be sexist themselves, just extremely insensitive, either that or they are outright hypocrites.

3. The pick itself is sexist--McCain made an insulting token choice.

It's hard to react to that in a respectful way. (but we're trying, dammit)

5. So we just prove we are no better than McCain, that's really something to strive for...
:eyes:

There are so many things to attack Palin on, her horrible record on the environment, her position on "Intelligent" Design, her position on Oil and Gas, etc. Yet instead people concentrate on attacking her as an absentee mother. Frankly, they are no better than freepers, and should be banned for that bullshit!

7. This is getting to be a strawman argument. A handful of posters
do NOT a sexist pattern make. Be offended at the few, without suggesting we all are attacking her.

10. Have you seen the threads attacking her as just such a thing...
Over half the posts are something along the lines of "I agree and I'm a woman" as if that, for some reason, excuses them on this bullshit. Its not just a "few" posters here, and isn't a strawman. There are at least 3 threads with this theme, and the majority of DUers who responded to them so far haven't slammed them at all, but rather agreed with them or excused the position.

11. I'll attack her as being basically a pretty-faced but inexperienced cynical choice, because
that's what she is--they passed over other more-qualified women to pick her, because the GOPers think she'll fire up the evangelical base and take attention away from Obama. If that's sexist, then sorry.

14. I guess I'm not seeing a massive sexist movement going on here today.
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 03:37 PM by wienerdoggie
Just people reacting to an awful pick.

16. Well, some people are tone deaf to certain things...
either that or you willfully ignore OPs like beachmom's and others. I'm not saying there's a massive sexist movement that is just starting, it was always here, DU is far more conservative than most people think, especially on social issues, sometimes the mask slips off, as it has today.

9. Not just attacking her as an absentee mother
but attacking her as being no more than a ditzy girl with no brains and a vagina. :eyes:

13. I call out bullshit, period, and bullshit knows no party or political position...
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 03:58 PM by Solon
When DUers were Questioning McCain's natural born status as citizen in this country, I defended him on that. When some DUers were questioning Obama's status as well, I defended him too. I hate bullshit, period, especially when it distracts from the issues, I frankly don't give a fuck about anything else.

6. She's not even a Britany Spears or a Paris Hilton.
Although running an add featuring the three together would be a hoot.

8. No, the theme in half of them is that she's an attractive woman, and thus garbage
I appreciate you effort to try to explain what is going on today in nice terms, but it isn't the least bit nice.

There are sig pictures here of her captioned "She can take ten inches."

I don't think we value Hillary or Michelle primarily for a presumed lack of vaginal capacity, so the defense is a misfire.

There was a troll thread here where about 20% of the hostile replies suggested the OP was a homosexual in strongest possible terms. This is simply DU as it exists today.

15. If she were a man she wouldn't be on the ticket
There's a case to be made that she got to where she is in AK politics because it's a majority male state and she's hot. It's not rocket science.

It's the simple truth - sexist or not.
