I think the choice of Sarah Palin for VP will add to the sense of McCain as a dirty old man. She will be his symbolic trophy wife (whatever her accomplishments in real life).

This combo is likely to turn off a lot of women, especially when McCain starts publicly condescending to Palin, which I have no doubt he will. I don't think McCain has any real respect for women as peers.
