We're going to need to call McCain out on using the "POW" Card
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 12:53 PM by Wolsh
From Ben Smith:

The POW card, cont'd

First Read quotes unnamed McCain aides suggesting that McCain's prisoner-of-war experience may become his first response to the attack on his having lost track of his real estate holdings -- a non-sequitur, perhaps, but emotionally powerful.

Quote:
They will be prepared to show McCain's "home" in Hanoi by using images of his cell. They claim they have not overused the POW element and insist they have "underused it."
And sure enough, McCain goes there on CBS:"I spent some years without a kitchen table, without a chair, and I know what it's like to be blessed by the opportunities of this great nation," he says in response to a question about his houses.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts:
Its going to be up to the David Letterman's and the John Stewart's to start hitting him on this, but once the narrative starts to change, it will be fair game.
If McCain's people really think that they've "underused" the POW card, then their walking on a thin line of trying the American people's patience.
John McCain: A noun, a Verb, and POW
1. Then they've proven Obama's insinuation that he's mentally out of touch
Telling us what caused it is cold comfort. They've boxed McCain in between a rock and a hard place.
Well... good.
2. If having been a POW is responsible for all his mistakes,
then perhaps he is not mentally stable enough to hold office. That is my reply when a McCain supporter brings that up. I'd lead it right into a question of his mental stability.
3. The same people that run his campaign now
used his time a POW during the Vietnam conflict to suggest he was mentally imbalanced and a traitor back in 2000 in order to win the SC primary for Bush. It's time the smears of the past were brought into focus so that the people that now run the McCain campaign can answer the question of if they were telling the truth back in 2000.
7. Well, here you go then:
We are all POW's. Prisoners of "W" . We've had to live with his failed policies for 8 years. We've had to live with an economy that has collapsed, a reputation around the world that is completely diminished.
Left and right you see friends or loved ones without jobs without ANY home.
We are all POW'S. Prisoners of W.
John McCain may have been blessed to "earn" his 8 houses after dumping his wife upon return from his POW experience -- and marrying into wealth -- but the rest of America is still held captive by the failed policies he so openly embraces.
It sucks to be held captive. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be behind enemy lines... just ideological ones that hotheads like McCain can't seem to see beyond.
Edit to add: A prison cell is not like a Holiday Inn Express. Just because you stayed there doesn't make you an expert on anything.
9. I'm gonna have to put my pride aside and agree with Bush on this one
In 2000 GWB made it clear that McStain's POW experience had made him unfit to be POTUS. :D
13. I think we need to stop
mentioning John's honorable service to his country prior to any negative attack we make. Doing that just blunts the attack. It's sort of like apologizing for the attack.
Let McCain tout his story. We don't have to.
17. I completely agree
It annoys me that Obama praises McCain every time he criticizes him. We all know McCain served our country and deserves respect for that. But just because he is a war hero doesn't make his positions/ideas untouchable. By going after McCain's policies, we aren't questioning his past service. McCain is running for President and deserves the same scrutiny that any presidential candidate receives. Obama doesn't need to remind people of McCain war service because that is one of McCain's strongest assets.
14. Some are already telling him that the POW card is overused. I am
glad he used it so often early. Now it is tarnished and will have less impact.
16. FROM VOTEVETS: "John McCain Needs to Lay Off the POW Talk "
http://www.vetvoice.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1800
When John McCain revealed that he didn't know how many houses he and his wife currently own (they have at least eight properties), the Obama campaign pounced. They accused him of being elitist and disconnected and launched an ad within hours. The McCain campaign--realizing this was trouble--retorted the only way they knew how: With a truly stupefying response from McCain spokesman Brian Rogers:
"This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison," referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War.
Yes, you read that right. McCain justified not knowing how many houses he has by saying he was a POW in Vietnam, four decades ago. I have some things to say about this:
...Lots more ...
