Why isn't there as much suspense about McCain's VP?
Or is there?

Is it because he already announced the day it would happen? (Plus he may have leaked it last night.)

But in general, I just haven't been hearing the same kind of 'buzz' about McCain's VP pick.

Any ideas?

1. for the same reason

that nobody has a McCain bumper sticker or lawn sign. They won't even donate to him, and many Republicans are rich bastards who definitely could if they wanted to.

Obama definitely generates more suspense and excitement, no doubt. That's why I think that after the Dem Convention, you'll see Gallup & Rasmussen showing Obama with a 10-15 point lead. Even if McCain's convention is good (yeah right), he won't be able to make up 10-15 points because nobody cares about him.

2. Because no one actually thinks he'll win, so this person won't be our next Vice Pres.

3. Because all the prospects are boring. The GOPers are all the same.
Unlike the GOP, the Democratic party is very diverse so there's a lot of different types of talent to choose from.

6. Because he's not as good at creating buzz.
Obama knew what he was doing. He's been leaking names since he clinched. It was certainly Nunn, it was certainly Webb, or maybe Kaine, how about Gore, no I haven't forgotten Clinton...

By letting people take part in the process like that, he got people interested. People either hated or loved each pick, and so they talked and discussed, and everyone got emotionally vested, so that now everyone wants to know.

On the other hand, it's a little gimmicky, so McCain is trying to more solid, stable approach, and trying to paint Obama as a wild celebrity. Different strategies.

7. Because we already know who it's going to be, of course.
It's going to be (insert name of interchangeable, generic, sleazy, pseudo-conservative, white, male.) Duh.

9. Because no one gives a fuck? OR...
I don't think it could change anything for him. Unlike Obama... adding a woman, or a 4 star general, or a latino, or any of the other stellar candidates would really solidify his team and add a new weapon.

And really, do you expect McCain's pick to be exciting or shocking? He's going to pick a rich conservative christian (possibly mormon) white guy. You know it. I know it. And the media knows it. Whereas Obama could theoretically pick someone out of left field. Speculation has been wild.

Or maybe its just because everyone knows the Obama announcement will come first. Maybe next week we'll see the hype for McCain's announcement.

16. But couldn't it help him "seal the deal" with conservatives and evangelicals?
If he picks someone they like and promises only one term?

17. Ok maybe, but do you see the rest of the country getting EXCITED about a pick like that?
I don't. I think the rest of the country will see it as BORING and PREDICTABLE.

14. Probably because you know what the Repukes are going to pick
Someone who supports unlimited war, and unregulated capitalism. About the only way the 'Pukes could do anything interesting would be to put Ron Paul on the ticket (who at least wouldn't support the unlimited war)

But Satan will be operating a hockey rink before that happens, so get ready for a **yawn** typical Repuke ticket.

19. Because the Republican leadership is scared that the different picks could alienate their factions.
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 01:15 PM by w4rma
Each Republican faction has a little bit of hate for the other Republican factions. The less knowledge each faction has, the easier it is to keep them voting against their own interests.

That's my current hypothesis, anyway.
