12. Oct. 3rd he'll be deployed...
Biden's Son Off to Iraq

By Shailagh Murray
As Sen. Barack Obama closes in on his running mate pick, one prospect with clear momentum is Sen. Joseph Biden Jr.

Even difficult news for the Delaware Democrat personally has added a compelling twist to his case. On Oct. 3, Biden's son, Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, will be deployed to Iraq.

"I don't want him going," Biden told an Iowa state fair crowd a year ago, when, as a presidential candidate himself, he learned that his son's unit would be deployed at some point in 2008. "But I don't want my grandsons or granddaughters going back in 15 years. So how we leave makes a big difference."

Beau is the Delaware attorney general and a captain in the Army National Guard. He is the oldest of Biden's two sons with his first wife, Neilia. She was killed in a car accident, along with the couple's 1-year-old daughter Naomi, shortly after Biden was elected to his first Senate term.

Beau and his brother Hunter, both toddlers, were seriously injured in the crash and Biden was sworn in at their hospital bedside. Every night through six Senate terms, he has commuted home to Wilmington, Del., on Amtrak.

The Naval Observatory is traditionally the VP house, and I doubt the SS would allow Biden to travel home to Delaware by train every night. Of course, I would have the house exterminated for bugs of all kinds before I moved into a place where Cheney had been.

You probably meant Missy, who's been so involved. The niece I met was Casey (college age). That whole family is SO together and supportive. I always feel envious reading about their family ties as my family is broken apart and estranged in many different ways. It's wonderful to see a family like that - they really do still exist!

Remember when he was talking somewhere and his mother arrived and he said "Mom, you're interrupting my speech." And she came over and they hugged and kissed.

She raised her kids well -- remember his sister's story that when the neighborhood kids built a clubhouse, Joe wouldn't join because they wouldn't let Valerie become a member? My brother would have shoved me out the door and said See ya!

It was his wife and sons that came to him and asked him to run for President this time.

So maybe this is just a family get together -- some other family news.

55. K&R
 Senator Biden has led a Very intriguing and inspiring life.. "Promises to Keep" describes the tragic loss in an auto accident of his wife and infant daughter when the then 30-year-old was a newly-elected senator.
The accident also badly injured Biden's two young sons, and he writes that just looking at them inspired him to keep going at a time when he'd come to understand how some people could consider suicide not "just an option, but a rational option." Biden also goes into his decision to remarry and start a family again."

"The narrative (Promises to Keep)recounts the collapse of his 1988 presidential campaign under the weight of plagiarism charges, and his struggle to rebound from two near-fatal brain aneurysms. And it recalls his overcoming a demoralizing stutter that lasted into his teen years.

The book has lots of memories of behind-the-scenes exchanges with prominent politicians and world leaders.

And Biden doesn't hold back in criticizing the Bush administration. ":kick:

I was just starting to like her and now she's acting like a groupie or something; as if she KNOWS it's going to be Biden. Funny.

100. I guess that's one of the problems with him. He was a Clinton supporter, and he has
foreign policy experience (a lot of congressional committee experience in that area), he's an experienced politician, and he's easy on the eyes (I threw that last one in just 'cause I noticed...it helps to be handsome in national politics). He's tall (it also helps to be tall). He's also from Indiana, one of those key swing states that Obama needs to win. He'd also help in Michigan, I think, is what I heard.

But you're right...he's not my choice. I'm not against him at all. I really don't know that much about him.
