New Obama ad: "Let Them Eat Cake' - McCain's 69th Birthday Party- Aug 29, 2005
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 11:05 AM by npincus
OK, not true- but a shout-out to the Obama campaign for an ad they haven't made yet. The Internets are buzzing that Mccain will announce his vp choice on August 29, 2008- his 72nd birthday.

Well, it's Obama's due diligence to remind America what John McCain did on that day, 3 years ago, his 69th birthday- and I am suggesting an ad, which will surely be Shock and Awe to his MSM allies... a real trip down memory lane. Tying B*sh inaction to his own oblivious, unconcerned, celebratory state for a man who aspires to be President... the Real John McCain.

On August 29, Katrina's storm surge caused 53 different levee breaches in greater New Orleans submerging eighty percent of the city. A June 2007 expert report stated that two-thirds of the flooding were due to levee breaches <3>. The storm surge also devastated the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, making Katrina the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, and the deadliest hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. The total damage from Katrina is estimated at $81.2 billion (2005 U.S. dollars), nearly double the cost of the previously most expensive storm, Hurricane Andrew, when adjusted for inflation.

.But McCain's record on Hurricane Katrina suggests that he was part of the problem, not the solution. McCain was on Face the Nation on August 28, 2005, as Katrina gathered in the Gulf Coast. He said nothing about it. One day later, when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, McCain was on a tarmac at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, greeting President Bush with a cake in celebration of McCain's 69th birthday. Three days later, with the levees already breached and New Orleans filling with water, McCain's office released a three-sentence statement urging Americans to support the victims of the hurrican.

STATEMENT OF SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN REGARDING HURRICANE KATRINA

September 1, 2005

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today extends his condolences to the victims of Hurricane Katrina who are dealing with a natural disaster of epic proportions. "I urge Arizonans and all Americans to reach out to those affected by this tragedy. American citizens have proven time and again how generous and selfless a people we are, and now we have an opportunity to come to the aid of those in need. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Americans as they struggle to cope with this emergency."

AFTER that, Mccain spends a year courting the endorsement of evangelical nut-case Rev. Joh Hagee AFTER Hagee publicly asserted that God punished NOLA for planning a gay parade by "cleansing it'.

February 27, 2008

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain won the endorsement of Texas evangelical leader John Hagee on Wednesday, which could boost his standing among religious conservatives who have been reluctant to embrace the likely nominee.

Hagee, who heads a 19,000-member church in San Antonio, is best known for his outspoken support of Israel and writings on the Middle East, where he envisions a blood-soaked clash between East and West leading to the return of Jesus Christ.

"I'm very honored by Pastor John Hagee's endorsement today," McCain said at a news conference. "He has been the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement in many areas, but especially, most especially, his close ties and advocacy for the freedom and independence of the state of Israel."

Hagee, standing beside the candidate, said he admired McCain's pro-Israel stance, commitment to nominate conservative judges and opposition to abortion.

On September 18, 2006, Pastor John Hagee whose endorsement Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said this past Sunday he was glad to have told NPRs Terry Gross that Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans. New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, Hagee said, because there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.

On his radio show yesterday, right-wing talker Dennis Prager asked Hagee to respond to the various charges made against him in a fact sheet put out by the Democratic National Committee. Asked about his comments on Hurricane Katrina, Hagee said the topic of that day was cursing and blessing:

HAGEE: Yes. The topic of that day was cursing and blessing. What happened in New Orleans looked like the curse of God, in time if New Orleans recovers and becomes the pristine city it can become it may in time be called a blessing. But at this time its called a curse.

Prager followed up by asking if all natural disasters are a result of the divine hand and if there is any natural disaster that is not the result of sin? Hagee responded by saying its a result of Gods permissible will and that there was going to be a massive homosexual rally there the following Monday, which he said was sin:

PRAGER: Right, but in the case, did NPR get, is this quote correct though that in the case of New Orleans you do feel it was sin?

HAGEE: In the case of New Orleans, their plan to have that homosexual rally was sin. But it never happened. The rally never happened.

PRAGER: No, I understand.

HAGEE: It was scheduled that Monday.

PRAGER: No, Im only trying to understand that in the case of New Orleans, you do feel that Gods hand was in it because of a sinful city?

HAGEE: That it was a city that was planning a sinful conduct, yes.

Last February, hard-line conservative evangelical Pastor John Hagee endorsed Sen. John McCains (R-AZ) candidacy for president. Despite Hagees history of controversial and bigoted comments - such as calling Catholicism The Great Whore and blaming Hurricane Katrina on gays - McCain said he was very honored to receive the endorsement, one which he also reportedly sought.

McCain has since both repudiate and defended Hagees intolerant remarks. But McCains double-talk on Hagee went a step further yesterday on ABCs This Week when he seemed a bit confused as to whether or not he still accepts Hagees endorsement - first agreeing that it was a mistake to accept it, but less than 30 seconds later saying he is glad to have it:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So was it a mistake to solicit and accept his endorsement?

MCCAIN: Oh, probably, sure. <>

STEPHANOPOULOS: So you no longer want his endorsement?

MCCAIN: Im glad to have his endorsement. I condemn remarks that are, in any way, viewed as anti-anything. And thanks for asking.

TIM RUSSERT: So we could have two wars at once?

SEN. McCAIN: I think we could have Armageddon.

- John McCain, on the Iran crisis. April 2nd 2006, on Meet The Press.

A few weeks ago, to little notice, Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee, founder of the new "apocalypse now!" national lobbying group CUFI met with Presidential candidate and US Senator John McCain and, over breakfast, discussed Israel and "other matters" Pastor Hagee declined to detail in the email he sent out to members of the CUFI mailing list because "This newsflash goes to the ends of the earth and I don't want to read it in the media tomorrow". At July 19th, 2006 Washington DC inaugural event for CUFI, after recorded greeting from George W. Bush, with four US Senators and the Israeli ambassador to the US in attendance, Pastor John Hagee stated : "the United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God's plan for both Israel and the West... a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ."

So, what were the "secret matters" John Hagee and John McCain discussed last January 29th ? And, why is Senator McCain seeking political support from an advocate for apocalyptic war ?

Pastor Hagee's email to members of CUFI :

Newsflash!

This morning I had an extended breakfast with Senator John McCain of Arizona. Our topic of discussion was Israel and his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States of America.

Senator McCain's comments concerning Israel are on target! He gets it! While I do not want to put the specifics of our conversation in this update I am glad to report to our leadership and supporters that John McCain is solidly pro-Israel.

We discussed his positions on other matters that I will share with you when I speak with you in person. This newsflash goes to the ends of the earth and I don't want to read it in the media tomorrow.

Instead of framing your comment in a personal, insulting way, how about sharing why you believe it is incomprehensibly bad idea (or 'stupid' as you put it). I am sure others would be interested as well.
