1. Not surprised, just disappointed.
I really think Brian Schweitzer would give us the slam-dunk we need. Any establishment VP pick (Clark, Biden, Richardson, etc.) would disappoint me.

I don't.

4. Not nearly as much as many others, but he has the stink of it on him.
Yes, maybe only because he ran and lost in the 2004 primary, but it's a liability, IMO.

Indys and crossover Repubs read all of the propaganda against him when he ran in 2004. It'll stick...especially since he lost. We need at least some of them to win, and I don't see Clark making the ticket more attractive to them.

11. But Clark
is the only man who stood up to McCain's military record. he caught hell from the press because of it, but he didn't back down. I admire that. He was shot FOUR times in Vietnam, plus he was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO...not bad credentials...and he's catholic.

I feel that people are still afraid to approach McCain's Military Record because of the POW thing--it seems underhanded and un-American to some....that's still his strongest point. ie his line "I know how to win wars" if Obama comes back with a "then why did you crash Five military jets?" he would come off as the bad guy. Clark is one of the FEW people who could go near that subject and IMO win it.

Also, he is still a DC outsider, so he fits the "change Washington" ticket....

14. I think he'd be a poor second-place candidate...
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 05:23 PM by MercutioATC
"second place" in the fact that he'll have to put his record up against a "war hero".

I'd prefer the campaign ignored the issue entirely and found a VP that helped the campaign gain access to a group of voters it didn't previously appeal to....rural America. I think the key to success is winning over at least a decent segment of the rural vote.

15. I'm afraid we run the risk
of a McCain Presidency because he's an "American War Hero"...with foreign relations heating up; the people here is Ohio will (again) vote for safety out of fear.

6. Clark is better than the others mentioned
I would much prefer Schweitzer, but Clark is much better than Bayh, Biden, or Kaine.

7. Given your conditions, I'd agree.
I just can't get excited about Clark with Schweitzer as a possibility.

2. I'd be surprised and jubilant---
But none of the people I prefer for VP ever get any respect. Clark, Schweitzer, Richardson, and Kerry.

8. I think he's been out of the running since
the interview with whats-his-face when he pointed out McCain's hero status doesn't mean he's fit to lead the country.

10. But it was a blatant truth
I had the same conversation with a friend who is a Viet Nam vet. He was pleading the case to me that McSame fought for his country and suffered as a POW. I acknowledged that but I then got my friend to admit that McSame was not necessarily qualified to lead because of his status as a vet. I told him the Presidency is not a reward for having suffered for his country. It amazes me how people think we're supposed to just hand the highest office in the land to a vet just because he's a vet. My friend did NOT want McSame to perform brain surgery on him either when I asked him!

13. Oh, it IS the truth
But I think the Obama camp may have seen that as a liability, something that would be used over and over to try to convince people that Obama is unpatriotic and not a "good" American. The Republicans are using that as one of their tactics and Obama's campaign people don't want to add to it by having Wesley Clark on board.

21. That's a damn shame
because we're in a military mess and General Clark is a military genius. How stupid America is not to use its finest and best, especially when we are in a fucking hole.

17. Extremely, given that most campaigns tend to leak the short list
It's probably used a means of testing the waters for the potential candidates before picking one.

If Obama goes with someone whose name he hasn't yet leaked I would be quite surprised.

18. Yes because we never do the right thing.
Wes Clark should be picked, he should have been picked in 2004, he makes the most sense and covers all bases, the perfect running mate. Because of the Democratic party's penchant for always fucking up I would be shocked if he was picked.
