17. Open windows, close windows???
Since buildings are packed tightly together, I don't imagine any will just take off.
BTW, I'm in a brownstone, which, in a collapse, will pancake into the basement, so that's not so appealing.

35. No, leaving windows open to prevent damage is a myth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_myths#Opening_windows_to_reduce_tornado_damage

They used to advise that, but it's been debunked. Damage is caused by high winds, not pressure difference. A tornado won't care if a window is open or closed. And if the tornado misses, an open window may let in damaging debris (not to mention lots of rain).

26. Last Year:Tornadoes Slam Brooklyn, Staten Island
Not only was the tornado the first ever in recorded history to touch down in Brooklyn, it's also was the first to hit a New York City borough since 1995, when a twister struck Staten Island.

Outside of those two, there have been only two other tornadoes to strike New York City. The first touched down in Queens in 1985 and the second in Staten Island in 1990.

Record-keeping of tornadoes began nationwide in 1950.

30. "Warning" or "Watch"?
A warning means that a funnel cloud has been sighted. A watch just means that conditions are favorable for the formation of funnel clouds.

32. Flash floods in Manhattan??
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NY/072.html#TOR

Flash Flood Warning
Sponsored by State Farm

Statement as of 5:13 PM EDT on August 15, 2008

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
New York (manhattan) County in southeast New York...
Bronx County in southeast New York...
southeastern Bergen County in northeast New Jersey...
Hudson County in northeast New Jersey...

* until 715 PM EDT...

* at 511 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
flash flooding from a thunderstorm near Englewood... or near
Bergenfield... moving east at 19 mph.

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... urban areas... highways... streets and underpasses
as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

but not so much so anymore. In fact we had thunderstorms forecasted for the next week, now they are saying sunny and clear. What the hey, I want me a thunderstorm or two. Tornados not so much.

Oh, maybe isolated thunderstoms coming in four/five days, which means it will be sunny with a slight chance of some cloud coverage. ;)
