Obama needs to be prepared to address the draft question, it's only a matter of days before
McCain or Cheney bring this into the campaign.

Obama should get out in front of this issue, by asking Bush, what invisible army are we going to send to the aid of Poland if he installs those anti-missiles systems. It's too late for Georgia.

Whatever Obama does he can not rule out a draft or he will lose the election.

is playing behind the scene?

2. No draft. Period. If you want to hold a war and can't convince people to show up for it.
You don't get to have it.

. . . that "McCain or Cheney brings this into the campaign." None. If they do, the support for Rethuglicans will plummet to even lower levels than it is already.

If anything, Obama should say that the Goopers cannot continue to support military adventures with our overstretched armed forces.

16. Uhhh . . .

No. Accusing your opponent of not supporting a draft means that you support it. And anyone who supports a draft is not going to win this election.

9. The draft will come up once in one debate and both candidates will oppose it.
So there's not much there.

13. Troop strength is not the key to potential conflicts with Russia
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 01:41 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
We didn't keep all those troops in Germany because they could have done anything much to stop a Russian invasion. They were human trip-wires. The set-up was to guarantee that the USSR couldn't invade West Germany without engaging the US and killing a bunch of Americans, which would result in a nuclear exchange.

It's the same reason we have troops in South Korea though nobody doubts the North could over-run Seoul on any chosen afternoon.

(Notice that Germany and South Korea have no nukes. Our folks are there as markers of our proxy nuke protection.)

That's why we are sending people to Georgia. If Russia lobs too many bombs it's only a matter of time before one happens to land on some Americans.

Maybe a draft would be necessary to keep up the supply of human trip-wires, but we are not going to fight a conventional land war with Russia. Ever.

15. I understand many of the US troops training the Georgian army have been killed or wounded. I believe
that is why be are forcing in those C-17's with medical supplies, in order to extract our dead and wounded.

23. If he starts endorsing a draft, he'll lose.
The anti-war left will either go Green or stay home in droves. We don't need a draft, what we need to do is pull our troops out of Iraq ASAP, not some months long timetable, but march them onto the plane and bring them home.

If Obama advocates for the draft, he'll lose my votes and hundreds of thousands of others.

29. Draft?
That's an easy one--it would be political suicide for either candidate to advocate a draft now, not to mention morally reprehensible. Why would Obama have trouble with this?

Take off the tinfoil, dude--it's starting to mess with you.
