Tomorrow I canvass for the first time this election
I just got this email from the Obama campaign and signed up for tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous because I haven't done any volunteering since the Dukakis campaign (when I was 13!). Even after my shifts, it's not guaranteed I'll get a ticket. Oh well, it's for a good cause and all - but I should probably do my hair and make-up. ;-)

Dear Obama Supporter,

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering to potentially receive an All-Star Seating Credential to Senator Obama’s nomination acceptance speech at Invesco Field on August 28th.

By completing two, three-hour voter contact shifts (aka. volunteer activities) in the coming days, you may be eligible to receive All-Star Seating.

One shift requires either:
Knocking on 50 doors of voters
Making 80 phone calls to voters
Helping people register to vote

2. Do it with Gusto.......and understand that in the larger picture,
every single thing you do to help our nominee is valued.

I personally Thank you.

Good Luck! :hi:

4. You'll enjoy it.
Canvassing door-to-door is way more fun than phonebanking. Most people will be nice, even if they don't support the candidate. Being a woman helps because people aren't as suspicious of why you're at the door. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes.

9. Voter Registration is even MORE fun!
You're right. It's easier to hang-up on someone than slam a door. Most people just won't answer...

But voter registration is sooooooooooo win-win. I think it's a really good way to get your feet wet.

10. So true. I love doing the voter registration booth.
On the 4th of July, I worked the Democratic table at the Chandler, AZ fireworks celebration. Mind you, this is John McCain's backyard. We had such a good time talking to people, and registering several new Dems. We ran out of Obama stickers because so many people wanted them! I recommend it to anyone who wants to get their feet wet in local activism.
