example of what that is.

Kerry made this speech, including comprehensive statements on "the issues"

http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/speeches/spc_2004_0824.html

He also said:

The world will listen to what the Republicans say when they come here. But words, slogans, and personal attacks cannot disguise what they have done – and left undone. They are going to say that we’ve turned the corner; that the job is getting done. They are even going to claim, as they already have, that this is the best economy of our lifetimes. They have obviously decided that some people will believe anything, no matter how fictional or how far-fetched, if they just repeat it often enough. That’s how they have run their administration; that’s how they’re running their campaign and that’s how they will run their convention. I believe the American people are smarter than that. You can’t cover up reality with a few empty slogans. You can’t lead America by misleading the American people.

People who tuned in to the speech on many stations said the media cut away from the speech and showed replays of the SwiftBoat ads, then criticized Kerry for "not discussing the issues"!?

Dem Strat suggested we CONTACT the MEDIA and let them know what we think at times like these.

My sigline has a link to media contacts, let them know what we think.

I sometimes think the goal of the Right Wing is to instill apathy. They want to keep people beaten down so they give up. It's strategy, and unfortunately it works. Let's fight back instead of getting discouraged! Contact the media and let them know what you think of their coverage of today's events.

1. right
all our criticisms, our positions or anything else we do or say can't matter much if the media ignores or distorts it.

i think that was dem strategists point. many people asked why don't they do or say this or that, but many times they HAVE but it just isn't getting out there in the big media.

the good news is that kerry isn't depending on the media and going directly to the people to campaign so we have other ways of getting out our message.

2. So true....
And right after CNN whines that "nobody is talking about the issues" they cut away from Kerry talking about the issues.

Riiiiiight.

3. Part of me thinks the campaign could use to better "use" the media?
By tossing them a bone once in a while. But, we never know what they'd do with any thing really strong from Democrats. Afterall, look what they did to Dean.

Seems the viewership may have to demand a change until we can get Kerry in office break up big media. ;)

7. I think it is silly to assume that the fault lies with the campaign
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 12:17 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
when the media is so obviously biased.

I'm not saying Kerry or the campaign are perfect, but they do not choose what is run on tv.

If you do want to know what the campaign is putting out to the media, I suggest visiting http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases everyday.

BTW, thank you for the links, I shot off a few emails...

8. This thread is about the "fault that lies with the media" but some
campaigns realize they have to "play" the media and some do a very good job of it.

Kerry is very calm, deliberate, etc ... which is what we need in a leader today. However, the media want's "blood" ... I understand that's not Kerry's style, but they might have to find a way to get some mud out their from time to time.

Dean pointed out that the news media by and large, isn't about informing the public, it's about entertainment. So, the question is .. how can the Kerry camp entertain and educate at the same time?

I don't have the answer to this question, but in the climate were operating in 'today' it begs an answer none the less.

The reason the Swiftboat liars got press, is because of the tabloid/entertainment value of their ad. I think we need to smear them right back with outrageous claims of our own. Heck, I'd love to see moveon run an ad on the Bush abortion for instance. Course Kerry couldn't/shouldn't be involved but...

9. To speak directly to your point:
Dean pointed out that the news media by and large, isn't about informing the public, it's about entertainment.

Don't forget to tune into The Daily Show tonite.

I don't think we have to stoop to the level of smearing, in order to both educate and entertain.

10. I said entertain and educate .... not smear. I also said Kerry needs to
keep his distance from smear campaigns, as he has done.

12. The abortion angle would backfire on moveon if they tried it
the rethugs and their myrmidons would say "that was then and this is now and that we should stop living in the past and stop rehashing history...".

Unless moveon is prepared to take her to the mat and never let her up, it's a topic they should steer clear from.

15. I was giving an example. I really don't think Moveon should do it,
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 01:35 PM by mzmolly
but a brand new 527 might do? :hi:

We could talk about Bush's abortion and his drunk driving charges ... call the group ahhh, Moral Mothers for Truth :P

Moveon needs to stay credible, though people dare to compare them to the SwiftBoat Liars.

14. See this F.
These Charges Are False ...

It's one thing for the presidential campaign to get nasty but quite another for it to engage in fabrication.

The Price of Power Politics

The technique President Bush is using against John F. Kerry was perfected by his father against Michael Dukakis in 1988, though its roots go back at least to Sen. Joseph McCarthy. It is: Bring a charge, however bogus. Make the charge simple: Dukakis "vetoed the Pledge of Allegiance"; Bill Clinton "raised taxes 128 times"; "there are Communists in the State Department." But make sure the supporting details are complicated and blurry enough to prevent easy refutation.

Then sit back and let the media do your work for you. Journalists have to report the charges, usually feel obliged to report the rebuttal, and often even attempt an analysis or assessment. But the canons of the profession prevent most journalists from saying outright: These charges are false. As a result, the voters are left with a general sense that there is some controversy over Dukakis' patriotism or Kerry's service in Vietnam. And they have been distracted from thinking about real issues (like the war going on now) by these laboratory concoctions.

I tire of being on the receiving end all the time. This game doesn't have any referees and the other side is playing dirty.

5. The "media" is more likely to sit silently by as Repubs say Dems will not
talk about the issues. When they have cut away from those very issues. The media has to challenged in these situations.

11. Cross my heart
Hope to spit (on the *forces that have PISSED ON all the enlightened values I learned in the country of my birth). An enquiring 18 yr. old in "old Europe" has a better grasp on the real issues facing us as a global community than most Americans. THIS has a DIRECT CORRELATION to the *CORPORATE MEDIA. Most on this side of the pond have parents or grandparents who *been there, done that.* Despite being BOMBARDED by Ami culture, there are these 3"X3" bronze plaques in the sidewalks marking where people who lived there were deported and murdered.

FOX, CNN and Allthenewsfittoprint traitors ARE LYING TO YOU AND ARE UNINDICTED CO-CONSPIRATORS IN YOUR DEMISE. There ARE those among them who speak TRUTH. They require our unequivocal support, in spirt, in cyberspace and on HARD COPY. (Kinda like VOTES should be... ;-) )

But I gotta tell y'all, you be looking REEEEDIKKKULUS! Ein Zirkus ist das, ehrlich... Only a dear relative will tell you about the smeared lipstick, spinach between the teeth and toilet paper trailing off the shoe...

Da Amis be like Champignons... kept in the dark and fed manure.

17. And working to steal this election right now
How much free time did they give to an ad which would have only run in 3 cities?? You couldn't raise enough money in 3 years to buy all the time and focus they gave these ads. They have been doing throughout this campaign.

Their polls are weighted and just wait until they get to exit polling and projecting the winner -- ugh.
