You know who you are.

Honestly, way to build rapport, especially after all the whining about tolerance and accepting people.

That is all.

1. They are just displaying their ignorance of bikers.
It's a reflection on them, not bikers.

2. Eh. Look, I',m all about biker-based bacchanalias....
but as many times as I've done Bike Week and Sturgis (and mine you, I've done both multiple times), and while I'll be the first to agree with you if somebody's generalizing all bikers, I'll also agree that, for the most part, the biker is a conservative fellow, generally speaking. Or at least, conservative libertarian -- "conservatives who smoke weed," as someone once termed libertarians.

3. Fair enough. But some of the comments crossed the line.
We have no idea how many people there will vote for Obama.

DUers don't need to bash them because Grandpa showed up.

5. Admittedly, I'm just spoutin' off. I just logged on. Haven't seen DU since this news hit...
and HuffPo posted all the pictures, video. etc. So a lot of the stuff you're talking about, I probably haven't seen.

6. This is normal on DU
Lots of pleas for tolerance, lots of self-praise about what open-minded, big-hearted people we are, and how morally superior we are, and so forth.

But don't you dare be southern (to pick a wildly random example), or part of a subculture which differs from the pre-fabricated set list of Official Accepted Subcultures of DU. There are still certain forms of bigotry acceptable on DU, and you can catch hell for pointing out the curious double-standards. :hi:

No different from those morons at the Tailhook conventions that McCain used to frequent to booze it up and grope women.

11. No one is arguing that
But it's normal for people around here to take the misogyny and sexism of a specific group of idiots, and apply them to the entire subculture. It's the same kind of specious 'reasoning' we get from Fox, CNN, et al. For a forum that claims to be better than that, we aren't all that, really.

13. Actually, I'll argue that.
A bunch of women getting ripped to the tits and flashing is way, way different than women being raped at a meeting of navy pilots. There is a massive difference between a drunken, debauched party and more than 70 women being raped or sexually assaulted.

20. Exactly. Are they totally wasted consenting adults? In some cases, sure.
But it's still way different than deliberate rape, fer chrissake. I think Sturgis is more comparable to spring break than it is to Tail Hook.

24. Hey man, I saw Zappa Plays Zappa in my hometown the other night.
How lucky we are to have Dweezil playing the music.

Ray White was awesome. Lots of stuff from Joe's Garage.

Highlights were Florentine Pogen, Packard Goose, Illinois Enema Bandit.

Ya shoulda been there.

Sorry for the hijacking!

LOL

Hijack away! Just noticed the DVD the other day... I must get it now that you remind me. I saw Ray White, Ike Willis, Steve Vai, Tommy Mars, and other veterans play Zappa compositions with the Seattle Symphony back in 1996, as part of tour visiting various municipal orchestras. Fantastic show, got to speak with Mars afterwards, very nice guy. Still regret missing my best chance at seeing him, when he played Norfolk VA in 1984... damn.

Thanks for the review!

33. Illinois Enema Bandit!!! I was there when it happened!
the local paper's headline: Enema Bandit Strikes Again!

I'm not kidding

he used to break into apartments and give girls enemas

the last time I remember it happening I was visiting my GF, who went to UofIll, where it happened.

the story said he broke into a place, gave an enema or two to a couple of girs, but refused to give one to a girl he said was "too fat."

not kidding....let's see what's on the web

this was in 1972-3

30. Sturgis = all bikers! Wow just like..... Spring Break = all college students
I've been to Sturgis and the debauchery is as equivalent as a Spring Break in Florida

This is really reaching on logic equating bikers with that place
Listen, I'm all for cutting loose but Sturgis is just a 48 year old's Spring break.
and I don't begrudge them for acting like drunk college kids again but
I think many of them now days never had a spring break in their youth.

I've owned a Triumph Bonneville 650 and driven Harley's
I'd take my Triumph over the Harley any day.

But Cindy McCain needs to show her tits first........

35. Which Bikers?
The middle aged I just got my first Harley biker? (Wins points for irritating)

The my daddy was a Gypsy Joker and so am I biker?

The I just got a liver transplant but I used to be in the(intentionally left blank)bikers?

The "clean and sober" bikers, such as Alki Angels?

The proud wearer of the "If You Can READ This The BITCH Got Her Own" tee shirt biker? (Vs. "If you can Read This The Bitch Fell Off" tee shirt type of biker)

Or my very favorite "I consider myself a Motorcycle enthusiast" biker (Have a friend who says that all the time-- he's funny)

The "I'm hitting all the young--we'll say stuff-- I can, and I can, because I'm a biker" biker?

In the main, I bikers who aren't shits. Just like anybody else. Flying colors or worse, wearing "PROSPECT" at 45 and heading out to Sturgis personally doesn't impress me, I'm just saying.

Bikers delivering toys to poor kids at Christmas time giving those kids the thrill of their lives does. Or bikers raising money to pay off a brothers hospital bill does. Those kind of community things you don't hear much about, and does happen all the time, now that stuff, I like.

37. Everyone knows there are alot of dangerous bikers on highways.
Weaving in and out, in between lanes. I'm scared I'm going to hit one. That's why I don't like them.

Plus, the noise. I know they think it's for their safety, but their neighbors sure don't appreciate hearing it every time they crank it up.

Plus, if I'm close enough to hear it, I'm too close to keep from hitting it, if I didn't see it, already.
