Senator Obama should vet fall debate moderators
Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 05:39 PM by RMP2008
I was just thinking about the ABC debate held just before the Pennsylvania primary where Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous mounted a full-blown effort to try to destroy Senator Obama. Any corporate media reps will attempt to do the same when the stakes are far far higher in the Obama/Mccain fall debates.

I think that Senator Obama and his team should make it very clear to the commission on presidential debates that they find it very important to have unbiased and fair moderators. He should threaten to walk away from the debates if they don't.

The only anchors that I trust to moderate the debates are Jim Lehrer or Judy Woodruff really. Maybe Meredith Vierrfa as well. Definitely not Gibson et al.

The election will hinge on the debates and we need fair moderators. Hopefully, Senator Obama's team recognizes this as well.

1. I agree, they need to take a stand on this.
Maybe they could get Walter Cronkite out of retirement. He is as sharp as ever and that would be great. I think McCain would be afraid to bullshit him.

2. I'd like to see a system like jury selection.
Sounds funny I know, but you take a pool of possible moderators, have them submit their top 5 questions or something in advance so you know what angle they're going for, each side gets a certain number of rejections, the possible moderators can be questioned and then they choose the final three.

6. I would trust him.
I really don't want to see anyone biased for either side. Because with an unbiased moderator, Obama will tear McCain to shreds and no one from the GOP can cry foul.

31. Woodruff ... just plain awful
talk about having an agenda ...

she even stated at the outset that she wanted the candidates to differentiate themselves, not from bush, but from each other ...

every time someone started talking about bush's failures, she interrupted them ... she wanted the candidates to pick on each other rather than bush ... it was a debate among democrats ... the press should not get to define the agenda !!!

i also noticed that each time a candidate was trying to draw a conclusion and wrap-up their statement with a little polish, she talked over their closing lines ... it significantly detracted from the quality of the oratory which i thought was war more eloquent in the previous debate ...

and this crap about people leaving the democratic party ... give me a break ... first of all, and the candidates failed to really make this point, more people voted for the democratic ticket in 2000 than the current moron in the white house ... i also believe there's been a trend to more and more voters declaring themselves as independents ... this doesn't mean they don't substantially align themselves with the democratic party ...

woodruff was a media whore and her colleagues were no better ...

6. Judy proved what a whore she is
I mean really, could she have been any more biased? Hell, she attacks the candidates and then admonishes them not to spend their time being critical of pResident Bring'emon! WTF! And she really didn't like the crowd applauding the answers, she actually tried to shush them at one point! What a fucking whore, she should never be allowed to do another dem debate. And that damn strutting around the stage was just awful. The entire format was just fucking maddening!!

12. I think so.
I know I've been still writing and keeping on top of the media, but I haven't been posting because it was just me and one or two others who did.

Unfortunately, they give us plenty to keep busy with!

7. Here are the debates as scheduled now:
September 26, 2008: Presidential debate with domestic policy focus, University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS
October 2, 2008: Vice Presidential debate, Washington University, St. Louis, MO
October 7, 2008: Presidential debate in a town hall format, Belmont University, Nashville, TN
October 15, 2008: Presidential debate with foreign policy focus, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY

But this schedule is subject to change as needed.

Interesting political calendar here - ironically from ABC.

9. I agree Jim Lehrer would be good.
Not too sure about Judy Woodruff. Brian Williams would be okay. Maybe Bob Shrieffer (sp?).

It'll be grand:

"Senator Obama, Sean Hannity asked me to ask you if your reduced use of crack cocaine these days is so that you can think clearly when helping Bill Ayres to plant bombs at daycare centers?"
