5. My question to the Post

Does the Washington Post consider this story key to the election? If so, why this story? Why not the questions surrounding Bush's alleged drug use in 1972, leading to his suspension from flight? Why not questions more relevant to 2000, such as, how well planned the Iraq occupation was, and how germaine Iraq is to the war on terror? Or where are American jobs going and what's happening to the american middle class?

Mr. Dobbs: If you think the Kerry swiftboat story is news, rather than a mere Republican dirty trick to get the media to further a manufactured smear against John Kerry, then why is it not also news that George W. Bush may have been grounded from flying in 1972 for using or selling cocaine? The latter charge has never adequately been investigated by reporters, supposedly because it is "old news" and difficult to prove. Then why the double standard on the swift boat story? Pleas eanswer this question.



He's refusing to answer anything like this question.

If that is true -- that the SBVT has NOT proven anything -- then why all the attention? All this attention to a rumor at best, a coordinated smear tactic at worst?

Michael Dobbs: By the time we got into the act, Mr O'Neill and the other Swift Boat veterans were all over the airwaves. Would you have preferred that we ignored their charges altogether? It seems to me that the more responsible thing to do is to examine the charges independently and see if they are true or false. I chose to do this by focusing on one particular incident, the day Kerry won the Bronze star, because I believed it was pretty much a microcosm of the larger debate, as well as being a focus of Kerry's own campaign efforts.
