Sometimes I wish Obama were white (and it's not bad, I promise)...
For the future of our country, I think we are really standing on the edge of a wonderful historic time. Tonight while watching Obama's interview with Brian Williams, he said exactly what I wanted to hear him say when he responded to what McCain was saying about Obama wanting to lose the war in Iraq. Obama's reply was said in such a powerful, but so respectful manner. He was responding to while McCain said he wants to lose a war to win a race, Obama has never doubted McCain's desire to see America safe. What an answer! Gracious and respectful to an angry man that does not deserve it.

But with all this, while I think Obama is going to win in November, sometimes I wish he were white, because with the way this race is going right now, I think a white Democrat would be up by an overwhelming majority, but that this goddamned country is too fucking prejudice to see what this great American has to offer and is too slow to open their hearts and votes like they should simply because he is a black man. I look at Obama and see this man has the great potential to offer so much to so many citizens that all Americans should be willing to take a chance on him.

I guess what I mean is, on one hand, I want to feel that certain feeling a Democrat is going to win in November and not worry about it because I really do feel the stakes for this years election are higher than any election I've been able to vote in and I'm afraid so many Americans are going to ignore this great opportunity.

(And please, if anyone is offended by this post, please ask for a clarifying reply and I'll try to make it clearer).

1. I'm proud of the Democratic party but the Democratic party is feeling what it means to be Black here
Can you succeed if you're black in America? Absolutely.

Is it tougher to succeed? Absolutely.

And there will be a section of the country who distrusts you and roots against you just because of the way you look - no matter what you do.

I am so proud of the Democratic party for not bowing to their fear and instead fighting to change this.

So proud.

2. Just hang on the nightmare will be over soon
Obama is the real deal. Or if he is not he is so good at faking it that we wont find out till after he in office.
The more people see and hear him the more people clue into that fact and a lot of people aren't even looking yet.

November will be here before you know it.

5. Bill Clinton got under 50 percent both times he ran
and this was when the area Dems are weakest on (foreign policy, military issues) was at the bottom because of the end of the cold war and before 9/11.

6. Why would you wish Obama was white...
.... instead of wishing that the racism and oppression in this country against people of color would vanish? If you're going to make idealistic wishes that have little chance of happening anytime soon anyway, why not wish that the pervasive fear and distrust of non-whites that hangs over the U.S. like a toxic cloud would go away?

I'm proud as hell that Obama is black. If I could wish anything, it's that the racism in this country that is making what should be a no-brainer election into something much more tense would cease to exist.

Your reply really is what is great about DU. You are so right and I agree with it all. This really is a no-brainer election - or it should be.

Thanks again..

7. And what about all the little guys like this one?

It isn't about just winning its about changing the way that people look at themselves.

There are millions of little guys like this that will see themselves differently.

10. You have half your wish already. Obama is exactly half white and half black.
You (along with everyone else, I suppose) ignore the 50% of him that is white. Don't you ever question why someone is identified as black when their heritage is split exactly 50-50? It's not logical.

11. If he were white then he wouldn't be Obama.
His life experiences would have been something different and he wouldn't be the candidate we have today.

People thought the party was to prejudice to nominate a black candidate. People thought Illinoisans were too prejudice to elect a Senator named Obama after 9/11. The pessimists were proven wrong and I think they'll be proven wrong in the general election too.

13. Initially, I had similar feelings.
Consider the importance of this upcoming election. If we miss it this time, we (and the rst of the world) may NEVER get another chance. Accordingly, I was reluctant to see the message "blurred" by having the Democratic candidate being the "first Black to have a serious shot at it" (or the "first Woman").

But I'm DELIGHTED to realize that I'm almost certainly WRONG! Barack's candidacy seems to be having a POSITIVE steamrollering effect. That he's the OVERWHELMING choice of the rest of the world, will be a Talking Point for the jingoists. But for the greater majority of Americans, it should be something else. For the FIRST time in so many years, we may have a President that doesn't require a massive land, air, and sea military operation for "protection" in the crowds!
