1. Does anyone else notice that the first cartoonist is functionally illiterate?
"Muslims extremists?" "Againgst?"

I don't mind being compared to a Jihadist by a complete moron. I also love his condescending portrait of "real folks."

11. I thought it was just a typo
I figure he missed a comma between the first two words and misspelled the other... mind you, I don't think an English degree is a requirement for a cartoonist... :P

12. Times were, you didn't NEED an English degree to write above the level of a High Schooler...
...of course, after seeing the out-of-clasroom literacy of high schoolers on public forums like YouTube, perhaps we've all taken several steps backwards when it comes to writing and understanding language. Of course, I doubt that Germany, France, or even the UK has this problem...

Ever see Idiocracy? Mike Judge was an optimist.

Remember the riots about the Mohammad cartoons in the Danish paper?

20. In architecture school
we had a saying: You can letter or you can spell but you can't do both at the same time.

23. The same is said in engineering school...
But the printing is so pretty, so precise... it's being drawn. That requires the other side of the brain.

2. the New Yorker has to be loving it!
Sy Hersch writes really compelling articles, but that doesn't up sales. This issue is sure to be something of a collector's item.

17. They just boosted their circulation big time.
How funny that a good part of that might be among RW'ers.

As are expectations. One periodical is known for satire, the other isn't.

7. New York blogger Andy Ostroy doesn't
think it's funny..

"The New Yorker's Willie Horton Incident"

<snip>

"In the Fall of 1988's presidential election the GOP's attack machine, led by Karl Rove's dirty-politics mentor Lee Atwater, ran ads against Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis for allowing convicted murderer Willie Horton to be freed on weekend furlough during which time he committed rape and robbery. George H.W. Bush, the Republican nominee, publicly stated that Dukakis had allowed Horton to "terrorize innocent people." The campaign was designed to tap voters' worst racial stereotypes and fears. And it worked."

Cut to 2008. In its July 21 issue, in an unconscionable display of poor taste, racial insensitivity, fear-mongering and bad timing, the venerable highbrow literary journal New Yorker put a cartoon on its cover depicting Democratic presumptive nominee Sen. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as fist-pounding, machine-gun-toting, flag-burning Muslim terrorists. What on Earth were they thinking? Just some 'good-natured satire' designed to mock America's racist dumbasses, right? But the humor has fallen way short of what was intended. Quite frankly, the cover is incredibly offensive and highly irresponsible."

It seems to me that it's pretty much pointing out how both sides over-reacted but I'd like to hear other's opinions of it.
