here's why Kerry should be attacking BushCo's environmental record . . .
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 06:21 AM by OneBlueSky
I've recently be advocating going after Bush on the environment, and going after him hard . . . stating that the Bush administration is an environmental disaster would not be too harsh, imo . . . but the campaign hasn't done that, thus ceding the agenda-setting role to BushCo yet again . . . and on an issue that Kerry should own . . . once again, the Dems will be reduced to responding to Bush accusations instead of forcing Bush to do the responding . . . allowing BushCo to seize the initiative on the environment is inexcusable, imo . . .

If at First You Don't Succeed, Go Negative
Bush campaign tries to trash Kerry's environmental record
by Amanda Griscom
Grist Magazine

Over the past few weeks of Presidential WrestleMania MMIV, the Bush campaign has fired off more than a dozen press releases about John Kerry's policies on energy, nuclear-waste storage, forest and water protections, and other environmental issues -- a hodgepodge of smears, exaggerations, and obfuscations intended to besmirch Kerry's pro-environment reputation.

Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club, says the Bush campaign is responding to polls indicating that voters are taking the environment seriously in key battleground states. "The polling in Nevada is showing that people are voting on the Yucca Mountain issue. The polling out of Arizona says voters are very concerned about forests and water; Wisconsin polls have shown that the mercury issue could hurt ," he told Muckraker.

Hence the Bush campaign's efforts to neutralize the environment as an election issue: "They know they can't persuade voters that Bush is good on the environment, so they're trying to create enough confusion about Kerry's record that people decide it can't be the issue that decides their vote," said Pope.

1. Punch the fist
Some martial artists believe in punching the opponent. A certain
school advocates striking the opponent's fist as it attacks you.
Clearly such a technique is not for the feint hearted.

In this regard, bush's fist is his "war president" bullshit. Kerry
is right on to attack the weakest part of bush, that he has in fact
been the very opposite of a defender of public security, and has
made war against all peoples of the earth unnecessarily with his
iraq, his war on drugs and his war on the earth itself.

Bush wants to make it about war, and he'll throw a bunch of octapus
stink up like the consumption tax, and questioning kerry's record,
and and and.... all an attempt to evade the very effective strike on
his mushy fist.

2. check out item #s 223 - 556 on this list . . .
One Thousand Reasons to Vote Against George Bush
http://www.thousandreasons.org/listB.html

those 334 items (fully one-third of the entire list) concern the environment . . . and I'm sure there's some they've missed . . . the ammunition is there to prove conclusively that BushCo is an environmental disaster, and that's exactly what Kerry should be saying, imo . . . he can't allow Bush "to create enough confusion about Kerry's record that people decide it can't be the issue that decides their vote" . . .

6. Respond to every attack or stay on message?
You can't have it both ways.

I keep myself informed as to what the campaign is engaged in as opposed to what the media whores are focusing on. The impression here is that they can be manipulated into somehow putting Kerry's message on top of their agenda, but it is my opinion that they are in the box for Bush so, with these creeps Kerry won't get any more of a hearing than Clinton did. He should keep pushing hard (he has been pushing hard despite the noise from the uninformed on this board) and stay on message.

Here are some of his efforts since June:

How many of these were you aware of compared to your Knowledge of the Bush smears? It is your responsibility to find out what our candidate is up to if as you attack him for an ineffective campaign based on network coverage. Kerry will never be able to control the media shills any more than Clinton could. I can't think of more infuriating coverage than he got despite his war room response, which was no more responsive than the Kerry rapid response team . All of the quick responses by the Clinton camp di nothing to blunt the bimbo eruptions, but Clinton managed to reach the American voters by staying on message and speaking to the issues that most concern them. That is precisely what Kerry is engaged in now. It is absurd to blame Kerry for the copverage of his campaign from the shills who are in the bush bag, and to claim that he has been flat-footed ignores all of the efforts that he has made so far.

How many of these have you promoted here, and in your e-mails and other appeals?

3. Maybe Kerry should attack Bush on something, rather than playing defense
The environment would be a great one for Kerry to be on the offense for. But instead we'll probably get more defense. :(

4. why don't you bother to check the campaign before you attack them
for being soft. This is an annoying habit. You consistently misrepresent their efforts. For what?

Kerry-Edwards Campaign Statement on 'America For Sale':

EASING RULES FOR INDUSTRY WHILE IGNORING THE RISKS FOR FAMILIES:

-- INTEREST: Coal Mining Industry Gave Hundreds of Thousands to Bush Campaigns. George Bush has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the coal mining industry. So far, Bush-Cheney has received over $300,000 from the mining industry. According to a Washington Post analysis, "a side-by-side comparison of one of the three proposed rules and the memorandums prepared by Latham & Watkins, one of Washington's premier corporate environmental law firms, shows that at least a dozen paragraphs were lifted, sometimes verbatim, from the industry suggestions." ( http://www.crp.org ; Public Citizen; Washington Post, 1/31/04)

RULE: Bush Eased New Source Regulations to Protect Polluters. Rather than enforce the law and force utilities and other sources to reduce harmful emissions, George Bush has gutted the Clean Air Act by creating a huge new loophole that will enable dirty, old plants to continue to operate without controlling emissions. The Baltimore Sun reported, "Yesterday, the Bush administration essentially sided with industry and handed power plants and other facilities the flexibility they have sought. The EPA said it was clarifying 'routine maintenance' so facilities could spend up to 20 percent of the value of their primary equipment in any single renovation, without triggering new source review." (Baltimore Sun, 8/28/03)

-- INTEREST: 61 Pioneers Were From The Energy and Natural Resources Industry. 61 Pioneers, each of whom pledged to raise $100,000 for Bushs 2000 campaign were from the Energy and Natural Resources industry. Five of these Pioneers, including Edison Electric Institute President Thomas Kuhn, were appointed to Bush's energy transition team. (White House For Sale, http://www.whitehouseforsale.org )

KerryEdwards: Committed to Ensuring Nevada Does Not Become A Nuclear Waste Repository

8/10/2004 9:15:00 AM

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Kerry-Edwards 2004 released the following fact sheet on nuclear waste today:

"Rest assured, Nevada, if I'm the president of the United States, Yucca Mountain will not be a repository," -- John Kerry, May, 17, 2004

Storing nuclear waste safely is of vital interest to the nation. Spent reactor fuel created as a by-product of the nuclear power process in reactors, can remain highly radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years, endangering the public if not properly disposed.

In his 2000 campaign, George Bush said he would not send nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain unless it was deemed scientifically safe. Yet his administration ignored sound science and adopted an irresponsible policy that rushed to pursue arbitrary deadlines to build a waste repository at Yucca. Those deadlines are based on the Bush administration's highest priority: moving waste to Nevada as soon as possible, regardless of what scientists know -- and do not know -- about the safety of Yucca Mountain.

John Kerry has a long record of opposing delivering waste in Yucca mountain. A Kerry-Edwards administration will make the hallmark of the nation's nuclear waste program an unwavering commitment to scientific integrity and to the protection of public health and the environment. George Bush broke his promise to the people of Nevada

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S REPOSITORY PROGRAM IS UN-SAFE AND UN- SOUND.

KerryEdwards 2004 Releases Plan to Protect National Parks, Preserve Natural Resources for Future Generations

GRAND CANYON, Ariz., Aug. 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Kerry-Edwards 2004 Today released the following outline of a plan to protect National Parks:

KERRY-EDWARDS: COMMITTED TO OUR NATIONAL PARKS

Plan for a Stronger America Will Restore $600 Million Shortfall to National Parks

John Kerry and John Edwards are committed to preserving our national parks for the benefit of current and future generations. The National Parks are one of the treasures of the American landscape. Each year, there are over 280 million visits to National Parks, and they provide children and families with strong and lasting connections to our national heritage. Strong clean National Parks provide links to our history and underscore commitment to future generations. Our National Parks also provide an important contribution to local communities. In 2001, the 280 million people who visited National Parks spent $10.6 billion during their visits. This parks-related tourism generated $4.5 billion in wages, salaries, and benefits, and it supported 267,000 jobs. (Money Generator Model 2, Michigan State University)

BUSH/CHENEY BROKEN PROMISES AND MISLEADING AMERICA ON NATIONAL PARKS: During the 2000 campaign, candidate George Bush promised to "restore and renew" America's national parks. Instead of keeping this promise to American families and preserving our national heritage for future generations, Bush has promoted policies that break that commitment and endanger the future sustainability of our parks. (Governor George W. Bush, "National Parks, National Treasures," 9/13/00)

-- Bush Policies Threaten Visitor Experience and Endanger National and Cultural Resources. The system-wide operations shortfall of over $600 million annually has resulted in rampant understaffing and site closures. Visitor education programs have been eliminated; cultural and natural resource preservation has been neglected; school groups are routinely denied guided tours of sites such as Gettysburg and Yellowstone, which serve as living classrooms. Families that visit the parks are confronted with unsafe trails, unclean facilities, and a shortage of safety staff. (National Parks Conservation Association, "Endangered Rangers," 4/04)

-- Bush Administration is Muzzling U.S. Parks Officials About the Shortfall. The Bush administration is muzzling the voices of the Park Superintendents by ordering them not to stray in public comments from a list of rosy stances on budget matters, according to an advocacy group. A memo from NPS headquarters instructs park officials to downplay cuts in operations budgets as service level adjustments and to praise the environmental policies of the Bush administration. The Bush administration even fired the U.S. Park Police Chief after she publicly raised concerns about budget and security issues. (Associated Press 5/24/04, Washington Post 7/10/04)

restricted to spending federal funds after the convention. Since Bush pushed his into late August, the campaign has been forced to shepard their money until after the republican convention, lest they be caught short and at a disadvantage at the end of the election.

on edit: kerry has done rather well under these circumstances in getting coverage. The Moveon ad, despite the necessary condemnation (positioned so that he could call on bush to repudiate the smearvets) was clearly orchestrated to fill the gap in time. Other methods have been an intense focus on local media in key states, and the dispatching of surrogates. I doubt he could do any better with the conflicting, anxious, grousing advice that I have seen on this board. Remember, Kerry has ALL of the Democratic who's who working for him. Unprecedented help. It's hard for me to second guess some of the best minds in the party.
