So what you going to do when Obama before the DNC and declares the "Era of Partisianship is over"?

What are you going to do when he tells the country on August 28th that the 15% on the left nor the 15% on the far right get to decide what the other 70% of us think is important to our parents and our kids?

Because that is what he is going to say in Denver and on the steps of the Capitol at 12:03 pm on January 20th, 2009.

4. I think he is going to say pretty much exactly that
And make a play foa landlide victory in the fall by appealing almost exclusively for moderaes and moderte to right leaning rrepublicans by saying you can trust me to listen and you can trust me to govern in the middle.

7. He'll be extremely careful in choosing his words...
But don't misread his pragmatic approach to reaching progressive goals.

12. I think that is precisely right
SOme people here are not going to like it.... but they beter ger used to the idea. I think he is going to attempt to change the political landscape for the next gerneration. Roosevelt in 1932, Reagan in 1980, Obama in 2008 both redrew the electoral map. Obama is poised and capable of doing the same.

8. They all run to the middle for the general
It's our job to remind him that we on the left also have the 70% in mind when we make our demands.

14. He has a very liberal record. He needs to appeal to moderates to win.
Would you prefer he do nothing but pander to liberals and then lose in November? Would that make you happy?
And if you listen to his words you'll find he is expressing LIBERAL values in language that appeals to a majority of Americans. That's a GOOD thing.

11. I am not part of either 15%
Most here are not. That is a talking point sent out by the right wing Democrats. If you don't agree with their hawkishness, their bowing to the GOP....then you are part of the 15%...or whatever.

13. Good. Most of the public agree on many progressive things that are blocked by special interests.
All we need is a President who will stand with the people and left wing groups are free to organize.

Where are you getting that people think he's some fringe God?

We invested in the best card we were dealt and that's how we're going to play the game.

18. You're OP doesn't exactly make sense, but if I understand what you're trying to say,
I'll be estatic.

If he's focusing on 70% of Americans want, then by definition that is bi-partisanship. Unfortunately 70% of Americans are not Democrats and thankfully 70% of Americans are not Republicans. Therefore, there must be a mix of the two plus all spectrums in between in that 70%.

19. First, center is not the DLC shit, that is the right wing 15%.
If he governs from the center that is good, much better than from the far right 1%. We make progress 1 step at a time.

22. Isn't that what his comments on the FISA bill
say in so many words?

the far left and the far right is not the 'purple' he sees as America, nor the voters he is going after.

He knows the far right will never vote for him and that the far left has no choice but to vote for him, that leaves the center to appease.

23. Look back at the last time in history America believed that, it was a lie
Take a look back to 1820, the Federalist party had effectively been finished. In the 1820 presidential election James Monroe ran without any opposition, everyone believed America was effectively united as one party, but the 1824 proved just how wrong that was. The 1824 election produced two new parties, which were effectively almost exactly the same as the two old ones, with a few adjustments for the changed environment.

Just how did the Federalist party get finished? Their opponents, the democratic republicans, effectively became 'Federalistized' in a lot of ways (though were always still some differences between the two). The Federalists also helped wipe themselves into oblivion once they were very powerless by looking like traitors in the New England states (their base) for meeting to consider a succession scheme.

Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 09:06 PM by Jake3463
Than ran the most RW administration in history. Its called good politics.

Judge him on his policies not his appeal for unity.

We might have 60 senate seats and close to a 75 seat advantage in the house. I think progressive causes will be just fine.
