CBS Poll: Kerry Leads Bush, 46-45%
The race for the presidency is now essentially tied, with a gap between the two major party candidates within this poll’s margin of error. Voters are paying more attention to this campaign now than at this point four years ago, and their overall opinions about each candidate’s strengths and weaknesses remain relatively stable.

Just after the Democratic convention, John Kerry led President George W. Bush by a small margin; the recent tightening of the race reflects a loss of support for Kerry among some of this election’s most contested groups: Independents, veterans and Catholic voters.

If the presidential election were being held today, and Ralph Nader were on the ballot in most states, 46 percent of voters said they would vote for John Kerry and John Edwards, and 45 percent would support George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. The Nader-Camejo ticket, which is having a difficult time making the ballot in many states, receives just 1 percent of the vote.

7. Because every other poll has Kerry ahead by at least 3-4 points...
...even Gallup, a poll that has been consistently weighted against Kerry since it became clear that he was going to be the Democratic Party candidate.

2. Weird...
Without Nader it's 47% Kerry 44% Bush

With Nader it 46% Kerry 45% Bush 1% Nader

Kerry's gets an extra point when Nader's not mentioned plus Nader's one point....

Hmmmm..

They said Kerry slipped with Catholics, Indys, and Vets...

Just a little bit though....

5. Whether you like it or not, this will encourage the Swift Boat Liars
Kerry's support has softened in this one poll. It's only one poll, so it could be bullshit, but it doesn't show any problems being caused by the Swift Boat ads for Bush. That means they will get even louder and meaner.

This should have been dealt with right away.

10. I would ordinarily agree
and that's why the campaign has ignored them. Problem is, the media has decided to hype thes MF's 24/7 so not responding hurts more.

CANDIDATES ARE SPENDING MORE TIME:
(Registered voters)

Explaining what they would do
Kerry 47%
Bush 44%

Attacking their opponent
Kerry 42%
Bush 43%

15. People think Bush and Kerry are equally negative so why not attack?
Kerry is already seen as equally as negative as Bush, so why not just get it over with and be negative?

What is he gaining by being nice to Bush?

That's an important qualifier. What if he isn't on the ballot in most states? What if he's on the ballot in, say, 20 states? Or 15 states? Or 25 states?

National polls don't really mean anything, because there isn't a national election. There are 50 state elections and one in DC. And Kerry is leading in the Electoral College by a pretty comfortable margin right now. At best, national polls simply reveal which way the wind is blowing.

Question: Who was leading in national polling for the Dem nomination in January of this year? I'll give you a hint: It wasn't John Kerry.

12. I simply cannot comprehend
That 45% of voters still buy Bush's crap. How can that be? Are they simply saying it's this close to keep it interesting?

Considering the things about Bush and his cronies that are constantly comig out, I just can't see how these numbers can be accurate.

14. whatever the number, it boggles the mind to think that . . .
about half the country still supports Bush . . . which means that half the country is out of their fuckin' minds, imo . . .
