just take apart his "memory" a little further.

Now, he's saying that the fire he was under was American fire. IE, I presume he's trying to say that a lot of machine guns were blasting away while he was on the crippled boat.

As everyone has pointed out, why were they firing? OK, he can reply that they were just covering "in case" there was an enemy.

In the journal he kept at the time, Kerry wrote : "At the same moment (just as PCF-3 hit the mine), we came under a hail of small-arms fire from both banks. I turned the boat into the fire on the left with the intention of trying to get the (South Vietnamese) troops ashore on the outskirts of the ambush, but Sandusky, who was driving the boat and who had his eyes glued on the crippled 3 boat, pointed out to me how badly hit they had been. We veered back toward her then and tried to provide cover from the engaged side. Suddenly another explosion went off right beside us, and the concussion threw me violently against the bulkhead on the door and I smashed my arm. (This explosion also knocked Rassman overboard from PCF-35 but no one noticed.) We continued sidling up to the 3...

He's busy on 3 trying to get a wounded gunner out of a turret, and then 3 ran aground and he was catapulted off of it. In all this, he has time to be SURE there was no enemy fire? Not only no enemy fire where HE was, but several hundred yards away where Rassman was in the water? To be so sure he'll sign an affidavit 35 years later?
