McCain Cancels Fundraiser With Texas Oilman Who Made Rape Joke

McCain Cancels Event with Controversial Fundraiser

June 13, 2008 5:36 PM

ABC's Rick Klein reports: Sen. John McCain on Friday abruptly cancelled a Monday fundraiser that had been scheduled at the home of a Texas oilman, after ABC News contacted the campaign inquiring about a verbal blunder the Texan made during an unsuccessful 1990 campaign for governor.

Clayton Williams stirred controversy during his 1990 campaign for governor of Texas with a botched attempt at humor in which he compared rape to weather. Within earshot of a reporter, Williams said: “As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”

His Democratic opponent at the time, the late Ann Richards -- who, coincidentally, would lose the governor’s mansion to George W. Bush in 1994 -- highlighted the comments in a TV ad during that 1990 campaign. View the ad HERE.

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said the Monday event was being cancelled, given the offensive comments. He said he could not yet say what McCain would do with donations brought into the campaign by Williams.

2. That's right folks, McCain loves and respects women.
That's why he stayed with his first wife who stayed faithful to him and waited for his return from Hanoi. Other candidates may have dumped their first wife for a thinner, blonder trophy wife, but McCain said, "NO!"

11. And yesterday he said this:
Sen. John McCain said Friday that every candidate's wife "should be treated with respect, and if there's any disrespectful conduct on the part of anyone, those people should be rejected."

4. Rape jokes are off-limits...
...as are abortions(for women that are raped, assaulted), as far as he's concerned. That alone shows me where he stands on respect for women and women's rights.

5. Anne Richards' was behind in the polls against this guy
But he kept opening his mouth and keep putting his foot in it.
She took advantages of his foot in mouth disease and ultimately won.
He was a real jerk.

8. Don't remember it as a reference to weather
My recollection was that they were having a "cowboy" outing: cookout and round up including branding some calves. The comment came in response to a calf's reaction to the branding iron, making the comparison to rape and "enjoying" the inevitable.

That turned the tide and Claytie never recovered in the election.

Used to work in Midland oil business, Williams was a local legend and extremely successful, but a tin eared politician.

9. Thought people had forgotten about old Claytie, didn't ya McCain?
No worries, I'm sure his money will get to you somehow. And you, Mr. McCain, you'll just lie back and enjoy it.

10. DNC calling on McCain to return money
The vetting wars have claimed their latest casualty. The McCain campaign has canceled a fund-raiser at the home of an 86-year-old Texas oilman, Clayton Williams, after ABC News and The Washington Post questioned the campaign about comments Mr. Williams made in a 1990 Texas gubernatorial election.

Mr. Williams was running against Ann Richards when he made a joke about rape and said he would campaign against Ms. Richards as he would a cow on his ranch: “head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt.” He ultimately apologized for the remarks.

“These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled,” said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the McCain campaign. “It’s positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive.”

The Democratic National Committee is calling on Mr. McCain to return $300,000 that Mr. Williams already collected for the Arizona senator, but a McCain official indicated that the campaign is not inclined to do so.

13. OMG, I remember that bastard Clayton Williams and that "joke"!
I was spitting nails and sent a letter to the editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. They probably didn't print it because it was too inflammatory.

Gawdamn, what a prick, I'm angry all over again at the mention of his name.
