college students: do they have to vote absentee ballot?
Since young voters are a huge part of Obama's plan, and this includes the 18-22yos in college, would they have to vote absentee ballot if they are away from home on election day? If they go to college in the state in which they live, can they simply change their address and vote in the district where the college is? And, if they go to college out of state, can they register in that state and vote there if they only go to school there? I'm sure Obama has a plan for all of this, but I'm curious myself as to how this works.

1. I posted on the other one.. I had to register in VT because of my loans and grants.
So, I had no choice but to get a VT absentee ballot sent to South Carolina so that I could vote. I have voted in every election I could. Many laughed at me and said why would you do that... those many laughing soon realized how right I was when their dreams of working in the science field were dashed by an administration who refused to fund science and our natural parks and the EPA and regulatory control.. so, please it is important for every college student to vote... Especially if you want a job that will pay off your enormous loans.

2. College students can register to vote in the district where the college is
whether or not they are "in state" or "out of state" students. Any student who is going to register and vote where they attend college should make sure to register as soon as they hit campus this fall so they are registered before the deadline for that state.

3. Right.
This was something that SASU fought for in New York State many years ago.

7. You'll generate resentment from the local community. I pissed off
Rochester big time ... actually, it was always legal, just legitimately annoying. The locals don't want interference from transients - and I sure was.

8. Indeed, it did.
We pointed out that they put students' money in the same cash registers as non-students. It was a long and at times difficult fight.

5. Part of the reason young people don't vote so much is
they get turned away at he poles. Seen it happen. College sudents don't really know the rules yet until it is to late to get that absintee ballot.

6. Everyone gets to vote in the place s/he considers home
What you do with your time shouldn't affect that principle.

9. Not necessarily.
It may depend on the state, but if you move to where you go to school, I would think you can register where you live. I did that throughout my college and grad school years.
