Do You See What I'm Seeing ???

I keep staring at that picture, with tears in my eyes, and wondering why it seems kind of familiar.

And then it dawns on me, that it looks like something Norman Rockwell would have painted.

Hell... it actually looks like a Rockwell painting. The lighting, colors, composure, and subject matter.

Rockwell generally painted what was best about America, and I think this photograph could stand right there with Rockwell's work.

We have the opportunity to be our best again.

And yes... we will be.

He's the focus of the people's attention, but the people's attention is the focus of the photo, and Obama's practically invisible.

80. you're absolutely right!
It's such a beautiful picture, and that's why--it doesn't make an idol of Obama, it's all about the people.

I know that reality will intervene sometime after Obama takes the oath of office, and he'll make bad decisions just like any human being would, but right now, after seeing Hillary's wonderful speech and seeing this incredible picture, I have such a good feeling about what our country can become. Of course there'll be the diehard McCain/Republican supporters who won't want to have anything to do with the waitress working two jobs in Ohio or the line worker pulling overtime in Kentucky to pay his family's medical bills, but I really feel like our country is about to become a big tent to anyone who wants us to become a united America again.

23. It just dawned on me about the "Hands" Photograph

It is thrilling to be African American and see how he is adored but there is another part.

All the hands in the photo are many sizes, tones and genders.

The Hands of Humanity seem to be telling us....

"If it can happen to Obama, then my dreams, whatever they may be, can come true too."

It means that a poor little White girl can be whatever she dreams. She doesn't have to have fancy clothes like Paris Hilton.

It means that a Hispanic Soldier that came back from the war with only one leg can walk with an artificial leg. Yes.He.Can.

It means that even though you are a box boy in the local market, you can RISE.

It means that Karen Bass, who once was an African American Physician's Assistant and later a Community Organizer, can be sworn in as the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE(the 1st African American woman to hold that position in California) and RISE to even greater laurels.

Obama is every man, every woman, every child all over the world.

His achievement is a beacon that all of us can follow.

My grandmother always reminded me, " Don't ever let anybody tell you how to dream and what to dream ~ YOU are your own DREAM MAKER."

Obama isn't telling us what to Dream, he is showing us how to make our DREAMS come true.

62. Compliments always feel good
no matter how old we grow. : )

That's another reason why Obama is such a great teacher.

He is always giving people sincere and heartfelt thanks.

Even when we think he is going to be predictable and just say, "Thank you Michigan" for example, he'll add something extra kind that blows you away.

Always positive, always on the Manners and Good Home Training Track.

No matter how mean spirited others are to him, he will turn the other cheek.
What an example he is setting for our children.

79. Terri S ~ that means a lot to me
Isn't it interesting that it doesn't matter who we are or how old we are ~ a compliment is a powerful thing.

I have been blessed in my career and in life in general to have people say nice things to me.

Yet, whenever I give a speech or write a poem or achieve anything in life, the first thing that I do is ask my Mother, "Mom, are you proud of me?"

It's funny, because a few minutes ago, I called her into the room and asked her if she liked my post.

She sat beside the computer and read(at 90 years old)the entire thread.

Mom said to tell everyone at DU hello and that she loved what I posted!
I still need her approval after all these years.

I call her gomama!

My mother is a huge Obama fan... she has adored him for much longer than I ever even really knew much about him. I think I am going to make a gift for her of this photo framed with this Obama quote:

“I love when I’m shaking hands on a rope line and”— he mimes the motion, hand over hand — “I see little old white ladies and big burly black guys and Latino girls and all their hands are entwining. They’re feeding on each other as much as on me."

He shrugs; it’s that distancing eye of the author.

“It’s like I’m just the excuse.”

Won't that be perfect? She will love it:)

53. he is one of a kind!
I read somewhere that one of his former professors said that Obama was "the most independent thinker he had ever met." Can't you just see that in these kinds of observations?

I was reminded of this a couple of days ago... a friend and I were eating lunch at a big mall food court when I saw an older black woman with an Obama tee. When she and her husband sat down, I managed to make eye contact with her and motioned to her shirt, grinned and gave the thumbs-up. She grinned back and we had a sweet across-the-room exchange for the next couple of minutes. My friend (who is super conservative, and not an Obama lover) made a dry, vaguely anti-Obama comment. I just smiled, countered with something positive... and thought to myself, "Honey, if you don't wanna get on this train, then I'm sad for you. Cuz, it's gonna be a wonderful ride!"

 and I'll be sure to post a picture of the gift and my mom's reaction!

Doesn't make much sense, but, got it!

70. Funny, you mention it... I sent both the OP pic and this one to my rw dad for comparison.
next to each other, it makes quite a statement. One works for the people, one works for Bush's policies.

60. I think this photo is not real.
I remember seeing the picture of the girl in an earlier photo but I don't recall seeing all those hands. I think someone photoshopped it a little bit? Why?

64. Right. All the edges are blurry. But it does reflect the response he's getting.
Please remember that he's not claiming messianic status. But, then again, neither did christ.

91. It reminds me of one of the SciFi B movies where the hero is eaten alive....
by a monster/alien/plant/whatever.

See, he's just about to disappear completely.

I know there is a metaphor here, but I won't chase it.

I think the picture is lovely on its face value, but I love cheesy SciFi movies....

78. This is an awesome picture
it can be interpreted in so many ways, but one thing that comes

to mind is the different shades of hands/gender, the delight on

that womans face should tell you what is going on in America.

That picture can also be seen as Obama belonging to the World and

how much the World would love to have him as their leader.

Very powerful....

83. That is an amazing photograph.
Even so, as several other posters have written, I'm sure it drives the Secret Service guys mad.
