"Addicted to drama" Hillary wanted roll call so Chelsea could hear her name
Yes, there is an interesting life behind the scenes in the Democratic Party. One where they're on to Hillary and resent her desire to turn the entire institution into her private plaything, even in defeat:

Mrs Clinton is said to have told friends that she wants a roll-call of delegates at the Democratic convention in August so that her daughter, Chelsea, can hear it. One party strategist yesterday voiced suspicions that her real motive was that she was “addicted to drama”.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4076114.ece

Someone in her own camp was more than happy to confirm the roll call idea was a complete dud:

Clinton also alarmed top supporters when she floated the idea of seeking a roll call vote at the convention "for Chelsea's sake" - a comment that was "met with intense pushback," a Clinton source said.

Of course, this little episode will be filed in the "how they were mean and sexist to Hillary" folder. Thankfully, fewer and fewer people will care as time goes on.

12. Some of us won't be done till Hillary stops the drama.
We are still waiting for her to concede and enthusiastically endorse the Democratic nominee. We want to here her say that her voters should vote for Obama over McCain.

A large part of the healing of the party starts with her. And some of us are waiting for that.

50. I think some haven't figured out yet that it's all part of the whole using Dem party for themselves
attitude that has been going on since the 90s that ended up HURTING our organizational structure for the past decade, making it impossible for the party to actually FUNCTION as needed for other Democrats, the state parties and their organizational needs, the securing of the election process for Dem candidates and Dem voters. ALL of these things were left off the TO DO list for the DNC as it became a vehicle to serve the Clintons and its officials schooled only in serving and furthering the needs of the Clintons.

2005 became the first year the party was ABLE to begin to break that stranglehold of the Clintons. I appreciate every Dem who focused themselves on restoring the DNC to a functioning organization serving ALL Democrats and the targeted needs of the Democratic Party.

Both have grown into fine young women - not afraid to be precisely who they are.

Kudos to George and Laura - they clearly did something right there.

Frankly, I expected to see Chelsea do what they've done - and realize she's got the right to work for a hedge fund, if she chooses.

It's just not consistent with who her parents told us they were.

26. What's wrong with a roll call?
Does Obama want it done by acclamation? That's absurd. It's the closest primary ever - there's nothing wrong with letting the states cast their votes openly - it's sort of a tradition!

"The Great State of Arksylvania, home of the world's biggest turnip, America's second-largest importer of refined bauxite, the birthplace of the drummer from Devo, casts its 3 votes for the next President of the United States, Chunky Giblets!"

or even Obama for that matter.

Many of us weren't all that impressed with either.

No matter who wants a roll call or who doesn't, there should be one. It is traditional, and it conveys at least the image of a democratic process at work, no matter how flawed our party's primary process may have been.

We fought a war to get away from anointed leaders.

If she had said do it for the people it might have been received better, but no,
she said do it for Chelsea Clinton, because it is more important that she hears it.

No wonder they shot the idea down. Its all about the Clintons and their dynasty, not the people.

72. Good point
Another indication among many that this is only about the Clintons, not the dumb ass voters that they must put up with in order to secure high office.

I am an independent, don't know how your dem rules work, but do you have a roll call every convention? Like would Clinton's request for it be something that Dean had also asked for. back when he ran but didn't win? Or that Edwards has also asked for? Or any of the other candidates that ran?

And not for the silly reason she wanted it done for the gratification of a family member.

However... rules don't apply to Her Majesty, so what are you going on about, anyway? She'll go up there and do the roll call herself.

59. Narcissistic Personality Disorder 101
http://www.narcissism101.com/

Someone who suffers from Narcissistic Personality disorder (NPD) has at least 5 of the following characteristics:

1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
4. requires excessive admiration
5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
7. lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
8. is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm — but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

The states usually want roll calls so they can boast, show-off their support of their candidate. And one of the states gets to put the nominee over the top.

Having watched a few - too many, perhaps, I seem to recall it that way.

the spotlight - now she even uses her own daughter to try to secure a purely political goal. That tells me she sees Chelsea as just another pawn on her chessboard to be manipulated to her own personal ends, and not a daughter to be loved for loves sake alone.

Truly a pitiful, hateful shell of a human being this woman has become.

103. The roll call is a standard feature of conventions. Every convention I have watched,
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 06:01 PM by QC
and that's quite a few, has included a roll call. It's one of the high points. It's actually fun watching the head of each delegation stand up and tell what his or her state is famous for: producing a world record cheddar cheese wheel, or supplying the NFL with more quarterbacks than any other state, or whatever. States even trade off their positions in the roll call so that the nominee's home state can be the one to put him overt he top. Corny, yeah, but a real piece of authentic Americana as well.

This complaint is just another excuse for the shit-stirrers to stir the shit yet again. Any excuse will do, apparently.
