Anyone watching Inside Politics? Candy (R-Butterqueen) says
that there is no reason to think that * pulled strings and used his Daddy's influence to get into the National Guard. She was quoting Howie, the media critic, and was spinning hard to find anything to refute the Moveon.Org ad. Is she right? Is it pure speculation that chimpwad used his Daddy's influence? I seem to remember reading pretty good evidence that this was true. Anyone out there better informed than I am?

And on another note, from the same show, why is the Kerry spokeswoman denouncing the ad? Grrrr....distancing is one thing, denouncing another.

1. Kerry is denouncing the ad...
unlike Bush who refuses to denounce the Swiftboat Liars' ad.

2. Kerry not being a hypocrite
Even though the MoveOn ad is truthful, it would make Kerry look hypocritical if he wanted Bush to denounce the Swift Boat Veterans for Half-Truths ad, then he has to denounce the MoveOn ad.

6. Bingo-- Kerry's showing * how NOT to run a negative campaign
even if your supporters wish to do so.

He, much like Clinton, is insulating himself from critiques and rightly so.

It's called principle--too bad the BFEE thinks that that is the head of a school.

8. There are many sources
In a deposition for an unrelated lawsuit, former Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes said he took a call from Bush family friend Sid Adger, a Houston businessman, asking for the favor of moving Bush up on the Guard's waiting list. Barnes said he called General James Rose, commanding officer of the Guard, and the request was granted. Adger was one of former President Bush's oldest and closest friends. A spokesman said the first President Bush "loved" Mr. Adger.

3. Oh, sure he didn't use his daddy - pilot slots grow on trees,
don't ya know? </sarcasm>

He used his daddy's name. There is no doubt in my mind about that. Someone here probably has a link or two right off the top of their heads for you to go to and read.

4. I'm fairly certain that there were..
several thousand names above Bush's when he was accepted, and he made the lowest acceptable score on his flight test. If there's a better explanation than that his father pulled some strings, I'd like to hear it.

7. There is quite a bit of evidence
I believe George scored like a 25/100 on his pilot aptitude test and that there were in excess of 500 people on the waiting list before him but somehow he got in. Hmmm. How'd that happen? He's just a lucky guy I guess.

I'm sure there's a resource somewhere that could be sent to Candy. I'm sure she'd correct her misrepresentation once she had all the information. Hahahahaha.

12. There is plenty of reason to believe that Poppy pulled strings for *...
...to get him into the National Guard and keep him out of Vietnam. The Fortunate Son phenomenon happened all the time in the 60's and 70's. How else did * wind up with this plum assignment?

That said, I don't know of any DIRECT evidence that Poppy used his influence. I suspect this is why Kerry wants nothing to do with this ad and is denouncing it.

13. Ask any of the veterans of the 'Nam era......they will tell you
how people got into the Guard. The Guard was the most loved group in the country by the rich and the powerful. That's where their boys went to hide out from the bullets. It wasn't like the Guard was out advertising and begging kids to join. They had a zillion guys for every slot and it was the ugliest preferential treatment of the rich I've ever seen. Kerry definitely would not have had any trouble getting in and hiding there if he wished...but he didn't.

20. Who'll denounce Colin Powell though?
"I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well-placed... managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units...Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to their country." (Colin Powell’s autobiography, My American Journey, p. 148)

Oh wait...that doesn't apply. Powell was referring to the rich and powerful and * is just a good ol' boy from down home...

23. Actually
Powell is probably the only respite of sanity in the Shrub cabinet. I don't think Powell really believed there were WMD's, but that he was coerced into doing it. None of the Asscroft's or Cheney's or Rumsfeld's give a shit about what he says, as is proven by the fact that Prince Bander knew the U.S. was invading Iraq before Powell did.

would either know of, or be able to find out how hard it was to get Guard duty during Viet Nam. Funny, now Bush shoves deployment in a war zone up the Guard's ass.
