Obama backs Lieberman against the wall (literally)
Posted June 4th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/15766.html

Joe Lieberman, fully embracing his role as a Republican attack dog, took the lead in a GOP conference call this morning to attack Barack Obama’s Middle East policy. On the call, organized by far-right Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Lieberman argued, weakly, that Obama holds the U.S. responsible for Iran’s strength in the region.

“Senator Obama argued today that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran,” Lieberman said, adding, “If Israel is in danger today, it’s not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way. It’s not because of what we’ve done in Iraq, it’s because Iran is a fanatical terrorist expansionist state.”

Obama, apparently, didn’t care for Lieberman’s comments, so much so that the Democratic presidential nominee confronted Lieberman directly on the Senate floor this afternoon. Subscription-only Roll Call reported:

uring a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Now, as far as I know, this wasn’t an entirely forceful confrontation, and the two reportedly “patted each other on the back” after their discussion. Reporters apparently peered over the edge of the press gallery wall to watch the disagreement, prompting Obama to smile and point up at the reporters. (I mention this because I don’t want to suggest Obama was about to smack Lieberman around.)

...........

And then there is this from Vichy Democrats:

http://vichydems.blogspot.com/2006/04/joe-lieberman-barack-obamas-mentor-in.html

NOT being a "Star Wars" geek in any way, I hate to say this, but some analogies just leap out at you: Barack Obama is the Anakin (or Luke) Skywalker of the Democratic Party. He's an incredibly gifted young man whose gifts who will do either incredible good or incredible harm to the Democratic Party and to the nation. And if Joe Lieberman indeed is his mentor, then Lieberman is the Senator Palpatine to Obama's Anakin -- a moderate-seeming, soft-spoken statesman who pretends to want only the good of the Republic but actually serves those who would destroy everything it stands for -- and who seeks to magnify his influence by exerting a maleficent influence over a young politician whose skill, electability, political prospects and even ambition far exceed his own.

..........

Interesting!

7. According to this link, it was LIEberman who initiated the conversation.
...

Lieberman approached Obama for a handshake and a word, and Obama immediately pulled Lieberman into a corner where the two could talk privately.
For five minutes the two men engaged in what appeared to be a serious discussion, each wearing somber expressions and emphasizing their words with gestures.

After a few minutes, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), sitting a few feet away with Schumer, shouted to Obama to keep his voice to a minimum and pointed to the gaggle of reporters assembled at the ledge of the press gallery.

The two continued their discussion, then shook hands politely and even shared a half-hug.

Afterwards, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) approached Lieberman and motioned to the gallery. Lieberman looked up aghast, then broke out into a wide smile and a laugh, as Roberts joined in.

Roberts then pulled the same routine with Obama, who also acknowledged the gallery with a point, but with a far less enthusiastic expression on his face. Roberts, though, appeared to get just as much of a kick out of it as he did the first time.

11. Maybe Mace Windu
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 12:25 PM by Fighting Irish
Mace was cool and had a purple light saber. And he was played by Sam Jackson. Anakin became Palpatine's lackey.

Then again, Mace was killed.

Okay, maybe no Star Wars correlation, besides the fact that Loserman's evil.

12. Well, I am a Star Wars geek...
and Lieberman is more like the Bothan leader Borsk Fey'lya. Sneaky, backstabbing, bullshit artist who wasn't above betraying his people to further his own political ambitions.

Obama is harder to peg, we'll have to see what he does. Right now he's kind of a Padawan. I doubt he'll turn out to be Anakin. But anything is possible.

16. Thanks for the comments - I was just looking up the different "beings" from Star Wars
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 12:44 PM by 1776Forever
and found out there are loads of them! Just like the characters they are really a story unto themselves. This will give me some more names to look up. Never new too much about Borsk Fey'lya, but from the following looks like you got it right on the mark!

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Borsk_Fey%27lya

"He lives in a world of shifting alliances. Borsk does what Borsk needs to do, at any given moment, to benefit Borsk. And he's so jaded by that personal philosophy that he thinks everyone else plays by the same rules."
―Luke Skywalker

Throughout his time in the political theatre of the New Republic, Fey'lya won and lost many allies, as was his wont during his constant, ever-ambitious quest for power. His rivalry with the reputable Admiral Ackbar, dislike of the New Jedi Order and anti-Human sentiment led many to possess an unfavorable opinion of the Bothan, though Fey'lya's obsession in his pursuit of power was mirrored in his belief that his actions should enable the best for the most. His fear of the usurpation of his power was reflected in his antagonistic attitude to the armed forces, whom he perceived as a contender to politics, and, having failed to assume control of the New Republic military during the Thrawn campaign, the Bothan would consistently undermine its reputation, most notably during the early days of the Yuuzhan Vong War when it served his interests to refuse the existence of the alien threat.

15. My guess...
is that he told Lieberman to get his shit together or he will have no say in his Party. He is going to have to make up his mind where he wants to go. We are not going to put up with his BS anymore. That would be my guess...
