My friend said,"Well, I like Obama and I don't care if he is Muslim."
And I fell out of the chair. She should know better than this - she knew all about the Rev. Wright thing. But she still thought Obama was a Muslim.

Lots of people here think that. I'm not sure what he needs to do to set the record straight. I'm not saying anything about the Muslims - we have lots of Muslims that live here in Kansas City and they are all fine people as far as I know. But Obama isn't one, never has been.

It's kind of touchy. He doesn't want Muslims to think he is desparaging their religion - which he is not. But the honest truth is that there are a lot of Midwesterners who won't vote for him just because they believe he is Muslim.

4. I hope so.
I was just so shocked to think she believed that to begin with.

2. What's even more awesome is that this lady is saying, despite thinking
the man is a muslim.. someone we've been told for 8 yrs to hate, is ready to embrace a muslim in the white house... This is awesome.. Shit, as long as its not McCain, anyone can win this year.

5. Yes, that is absolutely right. She just likes him no matter what his
religion.

She also like Hillary even tho her very conservative family just said horrible things to her about it. Hillary is just a horrible bitch. She is a raging socialist, and on and on. I go pretty offended but she just blew it all off.

12. Indeed. I've been very uncomfortable with the "he's NOT a Muslim" stance.
It's the same discomfort I feel when, on some rare occasions, others thought I was gay. Why would I bother denying something which, while untrue, isn't insulting or demeaning except perhaps in the eyes of those whose opinions can't be respected? Would I be offended if someone thought I was Catholic? Jewish? Both have happened and neither bothered me any more than to be thought gay. Why should anyone react as though the claim Obama is Muslim is an insult? Can't figure it.

14. I cut my hair one time really short.. at the same time at a different college
my best friend, also my cousin, did the same thing. We came back for summer break and all of a sudden we were lesbians. The idea was absurd to us and our close friends, who by the way gave us condoms and cigarettes as our birthday presents (we were also born on the same day...just another odd coincidence). We were thrilled that we were stocked up for the summer. (We both enjoyed the company of another man very much). Anyway, we really didn't care to dispel the sudden rumor... we new what we new. Our "peeps", so to speak, new, and as well, the men in our lives, and we really didn't fell like trashing gay people because we didn't care whether someone was gay or not... so, rumor shmumor.. we didn't care.

What's awesome is that this person doesn't care what religion Obama is, she is liking him over McCain... and this is the attitude that our country should take.

17. Yea. I've had lots of people think I was a lesbian.
I have really short hair and one of my best friends was really butch. People would see us together and just assume.

I could give a rat's ass. I think being a lesbian is just fine so it doesn't bother me at all.

ABOUT EMAIL SMEARS ON BARACK OBAMA
THE FACTS
“Let's make clear what the facts are: I am a Christian. I have been sworn in with a Bible. I pledge allegiance and
lead the Pledge of Allegiance sometimes in the United States Senate, when I’m presiding…in the Internet age,
there are going to be lies that are spread all over the place. I have been victimized by these lies. Fortunately the
American people are, I think, smarter than folks give them credit for.”
– Barack Obama, Democratic Debate, January 16, 2008
NEWS REPORTS HAVE CONDEMNED THE FALSE SMEARS
NEWSWEEK: "Dueling chain e-mails claim a radical Muslim or a 'racist' Christian. Both can't be right. We find
both are false. . . One claims that Obama is 'certainly a racist' by virtue of belonging to Chicago's Trinity United Church of
Christ, which it says 'will accept only black parishioners' and espouses a commitment to Africa. Actually, a white theology
professor says he's been 'welcomed enthusiastically' at the church, as have other non-blacks. Another e-mail claims
that Obama 'is a Muslim,' attended a 'Wahabi' school in Indonesia, took his Senate oath on the Koran, refuses to recite
the Pledge of Allegiance and is part of an Islamic plot to take over the U.S. Each of these statements is false. These false
appeals to bigotry and fear remind us of the infamous whispering campaign of eight years ago, when anonymous
messages just before the South Carolina primary." (January 11, 2008)
LOS ANGELES TIMES: "That the rumors are false and vile is self-evident...Presidential candidates of both parties have a
duty to denounce not only the smear against Obama but the bigotry that underlies it." (December 2, 2007)
ASSOCIATED PRESS: “Interviews by The Associated Press at the elementary school in Jakarta found that it's a public
and secular institution that has been open to students of all faiths since before the White House hopeful attended in the
late 1960s.” (January 24, 2007)
WASHINGTON POST: “Mr. Obama's slimers seem to think such name-calling and Muslim-baiting can score points with
the American people. On the contrary, Mr. Obama's multicultural background (his father was Kenyan, and he spent
several years living in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather) ought to be viewed as a plus. A president with an
understanding of Islam and the developing world would be welcomed by those who too often feel misunderstood and
slighted by the United States. Mr. Obama has never tried to hide his past or his family name: He has written about being
educated at a predominantly Muslim school. His father, a non-practicing Muslim, was Barack Hussein Obama Sr.”
(January 28, 2007)
RELIGIOUS LEADERS HAVE CONDEMNED THE FALSE SMEARS
FAITH LEADERS: “Many of you have seen hateful emails, blog postings and reports circulating on the Internet and in the
media about Senator Barack Obama and his religious upbringing. We are writing to deplore this despicable tactic and
set the record straight. We have had enough of the slash and burn politics calculated to divide us as children of God. We
must come together as one nation, and see our stake in each other as Americans. The bitter, destructive politics that
have so riven our country in recent years cannot stand.” (January 23, 2007) Signed by: Dr. Robert W. Edgar, National
Council of Churches; Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner; Salam Al-Marayati, Muslim Public Affairs Council; Rev. Stephen J. Thurston,
National Baptist Convention of America; The Rt. Rev. Preston W. Williams, Global Council of Bishops, African
Methodist Episcopal Church; Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, NETWORK; The Rev. John H. Thomas, United Church of
Christ; Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, Interfaith Alliance; Rabbi Jill Jacobs, Jewish Funds for Justice; Alexia Kelly, Catholics in
Alliance for the Common Good; Dr. T. DeWitt Smith, Jr., Progressive National Baptist Convention
PAID FOR BY OBAMA FOR AMERICA
. Barack Obama has never been a Muslim and has never prayed at a mosque.
. Barack Obama never attended a radical madrassa.
. Barack Obama became a Christian long before he entered politics. As a community organizer in the
1980s, he worked with a group of churches in a depressed neighborhood of Chicago.

6. I hear that!
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 09:59 AM by peace13
At a boat dock in Ohio an acquaintance saw my Obama button and his jaw dropped..'He's Muslim. I can't believe that you are for him'. I said that he was Christian and his buddy said,'that's not much better', which leads me to believe that Obama is too black for them. We had a bit of a conversation and before we parted my friend reached out and patted me and said, 'Don't worry I won't be voting so I won't be canceling you out.' I thought that was pretty amazing really, in an odd way. A lesser person would go register out of spite. My thought is that if I can't get a vote for Obama at least we can work on stopping the spread of disinformation.

We wear our Obama buttons and shirts every day and it really is interesting, the conversations that we get into. Good stuff that wouldn't happen if we didn't wear our candidate 'on our sleeve'. I like to think of myself as an ambassador for Obama, opening minds one at a time. Peace and love, Kim

8. My Father, a Republican, referred to Barack as "Osama" at lunch last week.
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 10:28 AM by AndyA
Fortunately, another Dem was there with us and asked, "Who?"

"Barack."

"Oh, I thought you said 'Osama'..."

"You know what I meant."

"Well, Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden are two different people, and I don't know of anyone named Barack Osama."

(Silence.)

I told my Father that he needed to stop listening to that fat, fucked up, drugged up Rush Limpball on the radio every day. I told him Rush was not his friend, and that he was lying to his listeners, had no respect for them, and had more problems and issues than most of the people he talks about.

Then I said, "You should be ashamed of yourself for believing anything those people tell you. Everything they've said has been a lie. They cover for Bush, and he's done a terrific amount of damage to this country."

(Silence.)

Yes, it was a fun lunch.

20. it's astonishing to me how many white people get their news from emails
They don't really pay attention to the news. They don't actually read any newspapers of news magazines. They read their emails, and absolutely believe any tall tale told therein.

My jaw dropped when she said it. Obviously I corrected her and pointed out the irony of people thinking he's a muslim and then pointing to reverend wright as another reason to not vote for him.

24. yep...a lot of people DO think that! i didn't believe it until yesterday...
at my salon appointment, i walked in during the middle of a conversation one of the girls was having w/ her client, and i was just hearing "i just can't - his religion scares me, there's just no way"

honestly puzzled, assuming she meant TUCC, i said "what religion - Christianity??" and she just goes "oh no - he's really Muslim, you know - that's scary!" and i swear it was her tone of voice that bugged most - like i was so totally naive that i didn't KNOW that was a fact:mad: when i said "no, he's not" she immediately waved me off with "whatever, i'm not going to get in a political discussion" even though we weren't even talking politics!!

(i always suspect people do that when they aren't completely comfortable with their positions, they don't want to have to argue their points)

this was honestly the first time i'd encountered this right in my face. i live in Austin - i'm spoiled! B-)

anyways, all was not lost, b/c MY girl, bless her heart, love her, hollers from the other room "no he's NOT - his dad was but he converted to Christianity, and you need to quit believing all that crap you get in emails!!"

then she came in and sat down across from me and rolled her eyes and mouthed "she's so gullible!" :D

25. Not to insult your friend, but do these poeple pay attention to anything?
I can't fathom how this rumor continues to hold weight. Granted, when Obama first appeared on the political horizon - I can understand people believing this shit. But if anybody watches/reads the news on a semi regular basis, you'd think the Wright controversy would have dispelled the Muslim misconception for good.

I don't get it.
