29. That's it in a nutshell.
Their pool of choices was really just that shallow.

and busting unions.

24. I still think Romney's mormonism was a problem for them.
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 12:18 AM by impeachdubya
Probably the Biz wing was okay with him, but the religious nutter butters pull the GOP's strings. They'll accept Mormon support, but I don't think they're willing to put a Mormon in charge.

25. I'd say the vast majority of them would agree with his anti working class stance.
So it must of been his Mormonism that sicken them

40. Huckabee is surprisingly likeable. Very charming person. Charismatic.
Batshit insane fundie whackjob, but likeable.
Romney would've won, if not for Huckabee's presence in the race.
Huckabee never had a realistic chance, because charming as he is, his platform doesn't ahve much appeal outside of his (narrow) base.

23. Yeah, I coulda told you Rudy didn't stand a chance. The flogging on 9-11 they could tolerate, but
his being pro-choice they couldn't.

And he's from Neeeeeew York City, he supports gay rights, and there are pictures of him in a dress.

Not gonna happen. Mostly because he's pro-choice.

31. I agree, they just didn't have anyone their base got excited about
I think Ron Paul was their best candidate and he hardly got any voting support at all.

7. Two reasons...
They had a lousy selection of candidates.
The repuke party isn't the party of bush, cheney and rove anymore. IMO, it's being forced to ditch the RW views which is why McCain got the nod.

The RW nutjobs are a minority and will be left behind. It'll take years for the repuke party to recover from their support of the criminals and warmongers...if ever.

10. Republicans generally pick the most senior candidate,
the one who has "paid his dues."

That's why they ended up with Dole in 96.

14. Fred Thompson failed to live up the the hype
he was supposed to be the one everyone united around. his failure is what in the end helped McCain.

Romney was too much of a phony to win in key states like Iowa and South Carolina. it helped that NH was one of the first states to go .

the Republicans were mostly split with a small but significant number supporting Ron Paul and my guess is a lot of money went to him also.

33. the base divided itself between Huck and Romney, Thompson and Rudy ran pathetic campaigns
and McCain looked like the best thing possible in a year where having a reputation (even one that is ill-deserved) as appealing outside the base was all they had left.

34. Because winner takes all?
Who would be their king if they had had proportional representation? I suppose that became unknowable once McCaint had the required number of delegates and much of the subsequent voting would be skewed accordingly.

36. Because
They thought Hillary would be our candidate and considered him to be "tougher" and have "more experience".

She was the frame he was chosen against. Other GOPers were better suited to take on Barack, though I doubt any stood much of a chance.
