Clyburn: “I got home, and I was so emotional I couldn’t feel myself. I was numb.”
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who grew up in segregated South Carolina and rose to the majority whip position last year, said he was so overcome with emotion Tuesday night that he left a victory party and had to watch Obama’s speech alone.

He poured himself a Jack Daniels and Diet Coke and watched Obama speak.

Clyburn said he was disappointed that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) didn’t concede but then added: “Nobody can dampen this for me.”

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), son of the one-time presidential contender, said Obama’s victory overwhelmed him.

“I cried all night. I’m going to be crying for the next four years,” he said. “What Barack Obama has accomplished is the single most extraordinary event that has occurred in the 232 years of the nation’s political history. ... The event itself is so extraordinary that another chapter could be added to the Bible to chronicle its significance.”

11. I cried on the night of the Mississippi primary.
I lived in Mississippi during segregation and it was simply overwhelming to see that state going for Obama. And I'm white.

I can't imagine how emotional this must have been for Rep Clyburn. Last night was truly amazing and a big reason that I was so disappointed that Hillary would not allow this moment to sink in without insisting on being the center of attention. Obama, his supporters, and all African Americans no matter who they were supporting, deserved to have this moment without distraction. Fortunately, they will get another opportunity in November and in January.

16. For the first time today..
I heard a talking head refer to him as "multi-racial". I thought "good"! Why can't we share him!

I guess it's because of how he appears and the dominant AA gene.

20. This story is about James Clyburn. Do you have any grasp of history at all?
Obama has become the first black nominee of our party. To people like Clyburn and other African Americans, this is a day many thought would never come and it is a time foor great joy. Hell, it is a time that my white ass never thought would come to. and what do you do? You piss all over their parade with your unfortunate comments. You dont belong on DU. DU is a little too good for you.

26. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Obama is the first person of African origins ...
... (with accompanying skin color) ... to get this far in seeking the leadership of a Western country -- and most certainly the first in *this* country's history, which is historically significant, regardless of the results in November.

Why do you find it necessary to shit on everyone's parade? History was made, this is not another friggin alleged "card" someone is playing.

25. And have you heard Obama, himself, proclaim any special significance of his victory?
... owing to the color of his skin? I haven't seen Obama or his campaign making too much hay about it, though pundits, politicians and some common people have been.

15. Last night was the most biggest historical event in America. I am still
numb from it. Last night a new page in global politics was turned. We should be proud of ourselves to finally put color and race aside and see equality in each other. Thank you Obama and Hillary to be the cause of it.

Let's start healing.

21. I'm glad
Glad that an old warrior like Clyburn has lived to see a day he probably never thought possible. I'm glad for anyone who has spent their life working to make such a day happen, that they have seen their efforts pay off. Nothing is more life affirming.

23. JJ, Jr., what does the Bible have to do with Obama's win?
It was not a religious event, and certainly not a strictly Christian event. Such a statement has no place in American politics.

How about just adding some sections to a few textbooks, eh?
