Feingold, Kohl Endorse Barack Obama

POSTED: 11:27 am CDT June 4, 2008

WASHINGTON -- A day after the Illinois Sen. Barack Obama clinched the Democratic presidential nomination over rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Wisconsin Sens. Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl endorsed Obama for president.

The endorsements were not a surprise. Feingold had said he was "inclined" to support Obama after the Illinois senator won Wisconsin's Democratic primary in February. But Feingold held off making the endorsement until now.

In a statement Wednesday, he called Obama "an effective leader, capable of leading our country into a new era."

Kohl said that now that Obama has clinched the nomination, "we can unite behind his historic candidacy." As superdelegates, the senators are free to vote for any candidate they wish at the Democratic convention.

7. Thats been my favorite ticket since I switched my support to Obama
Honestly, whats the downside?

He is a no nonsense kind of guy and that plays well in my state (ohio) as well as a few others. It locks up WI and puts MI out of reach for McCain in my opinion.

8. Well, I know what they'll say.
Too liberal. Not for me. Hell, I want a gay marriage in every bilingual abortion clinic. But they'll say he's too liberal for the independents and crossovers. I think you can also win by playing to your base, though, so I'd love to see Obama/Feingold. And Feingold/Anybody in 2016.

11. He fits pefectly with Obama's message
Only senator to vote against the Patriot Act, one of 23 against IWR. Hes jewish and strong on gay rights, which shores up some perceived weaknesses of Obama within the party (key word being perceived). He has a somewhat centrist record on gun issues, and hes also fiscally responsible.

"The Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan advocacy group that pushes for fiscal responsibility, placed him on its "Senate Honor Roll" every year since 1997, and ranked him in the top two every year since 1998, making their suggestion that Feingold is also one of the top budget hawks in Congress"

Its hard for the republicans to attack him on taxes when he rates higher than almost all of the senators on fiscal responsibility. Only issue that the repubs can hit him on for being too liberal is gay marraige, and thats a wedge issue they already pulled out of the closet in 2004.
