HELP! Need a reply to a Racist "Buchanan to Obama" email
One of my husbands college "buddies" just sent this piece of crap to us yesterday. I thought i'd seen all of the Anti-Obama emails, but this one either slipped through, or I was somehow lucky enough to avoid it up until now.

I'm looking for some assistance in writing a well pointed "reply" back to this. Unfortunately "You're a total fucking idiot" is not something my husband will let me send (I already tried). I need something a bit more "professional" and well laid out. So please post any replies below and i'll piece something together.

Thanks-

Buchanan to Obama

by Patrick J. Buchanan

Barack says we need to have a conversation about race in America.?

Fair enough. But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation. White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to.

This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.

Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks -- with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas -- to advance black applicants over white applicants.

Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude??

Barack talks about new 'ladders of opportunity' for blacks.

Let him go to Altoona?and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for 'deserving' white kids.?

Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America ? Is it really white America 's fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?

Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?

As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

Is Barack aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?

We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena . And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.

Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago.

Be a better friend,

A Brief for Whitey strikes again. That was the name of it, right? It wasn't a letter specifically to Obama (well, it kind of was, but you know), but an article "A Brief for Whitey" that he wrote on his website. I have even heard him talk about it on MSNBC. Since they are already taking Buchanan as someone credible and objective, I'm afraid it's no use.

4. Thank You
I googled "A Brief for Whitey" and went to P.B.'s site where he has the entire thing posted. I wasn't sure where this originated, or how long it's been out there. I appreciate the heads up.

Thanks!

2. Why waste time?
It's up to you, obviously, but I don't think such mass-market emails are worthy of your time.

Volunteer for your candidate...post on message boards in favor of your candidate.

But an email like this?

Shitcan it.

3. Already Volunteer... Donate $$$ and here I am posting...
I guess it's personal. This guy is one of the few repug friends my husband has from college.. and it pisses me off that he thinks he can just "mass email" this shit out to people - especially since he KNOWS we're Obama supporters. We don't send him emails, because we understand he has his opinion on politics.... but we still get crap like this back from time to time.

And, it wasn't just a "McCain is better then Obama because" type of email.. it's a total racist flamethrowing email. Makes me want to puke.. and i'm thinking if I send (or my husband) sends a nice reply telling him what a fucking idiot he is, it might get him to stop sending this crap. Will it change his mind? Hell no - but perhaps he'll get a friggin' clue.

But, you're probably right.. i should just chill out for a bit before replying with anything, or my husband might be less 1 friend. Not that i'd care at all - but they have a "history" that goes beyond politics. Ugh.

5. You could try "Pat Buchanan is a well-known racist, xenophobic crypto-facist...
... so this letter is par for the course. If this is the kind of company you choose to keep and/or respect, then there really is little I can write that will convince you that Buchanan is as wrong now as he has ever been."

Sorry, but I do not read nor endorse these Republican emails and certainly would not forward them on to friends or family.

9. As a 60+, overweight....
left-handed, Catholic convert (falling away)white woman there is nothing to say to such idiocy. The perp is tone-deaf and his followers unable to think outside his box (pun?). I would love to see a blow-up in his face but he is so certain he is right that no truth will disturb his composure and certainty.
Funny thing is that Buchanan as an Irish Catholic was once as despised by his now confreres as Obama is today. There is no worse traitor than the one who gets accepted by those that once demeaned him.
And I am sick of whinnyness of white prominent males about how the system they designed and benefit enormously from has betrayed them. They stamp their well-shod feet in unison to the mantra: "what about us?". Sorry but I am part of too many "minorities" to care how much you are being ignored. It's about time you realize you are living on the same planet as the rest of us - no privileges allowed except for those ill or disabled and the abused if you are a white male.

10. Its all in this one:
"We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude??"

Its like someone cutting your arm off and then drive you to the hospital - and then complain that you report him to the police.

The entire reason for the actions he portray as generousity, is the bad statistics he quotes later.
If he refuses to see the correlation between slavery plus the organized discrimination going on far up in to the last century and the current social problems of the black community, then you can't really argue with him. But its worth bringing up.
Until that has been made right, there is no right to expect gratitude. Quite the contrary. EVERY white kid got preferential treatment before organised discrimination was abolished.

And I think his math skills might be evading him, when he spouts the crimes of violence statistics(and I don't even know if they are true). Because all they show is that people are more likely to commit crime against people in their own neightbourhood. Given the overall percentage of whites to blacks, 45% is low, compared to the attacks being applied completely random across demographics. The number ought to be 85% or so in a racially indifferent US.

And as far as his rape statistics, the same more or less goes. Given the percentages of the demographics and the above mentioned problems that have not yet eradicated the setback of slavery and discrimination, any such numbers are a natural result - not of race, but of social structures.

Its easy to talk about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars. He just forgets the 200 years and not a dime that went before that.

But I guess that all of this would fly over the head of anybody willing to spread something like that.

And you said he had gone to college?

12. Great Reply..
Thanks, I think i'll put much of that into my reply.

Yes - sadly he did graduate from college, and at age 35 is a very well paid commercial property manager. I'm not sure how many classes he & my husband could have been in together though, because their philosphies are 180 degrees different (thank GOD). I have a feeling Buchanan went to college too - and that doesn't seem to stop him from spreading this garbage.

Again - thanks for your reply!

http://www.ncpa.org/pi/welfare/welfare1.html

1964-1994 5.4 trillion

a ton of money yes but not even close to 40 trillion.

How much did we spend on defense in the 1980's? 4 trillion?

How much did we spend on defense 1963-1993?

16. First, I'd be surprised if Buchanan really wrote this.
Not because Buchanan isn't racist, but because it is so poorly written and so poorly thought out. Buchanan is just a better writer.

Second, any letter which starts out saying that blacks should be grateful because they were brought to America on slave ships and introduced to the "salvation" of Christianity can't be taken seriously. Slavery was an atrocity with no redeeming features, and the fact that once slavery ended the former slaves were able to have some successes in their new land is not a good enough excuse to justify slavery, or to excuse the imprisoning nation. For a parallel that's not even a stretch, one could say that Jews should be grateful for the Holocaust because of how successful they are in Israel.

Third, all that money this email claims we spent on African Americans wasn't just spent on African Americans, and it didn't just come from white people. Our taxes are one of the few things that are somewhat egalitarian, in that everyone is taxed. In fact, since more blacks live below or close to the poverty line, and since our income tax system is regressive, it can be argued that African Americans as a whole pay a greater share of their survival income than whites.

And of course, the majority of people who have collected welfare, food stamps, and all those other great gifts from our white magnanimity (even though that money came from blacks as well) were white. And every bit of that went back into the economy (people spend food stamps at once, so they stimulate the economy more than the savings of the wealthier), stimulating it further. There was no great charity from whites to blacks.

And all that overlooks the fact that the reason African Americans needed assistance was because they were legally segregated and oppressed, and prevented by law and social custom from building the wealth base that white Americans have been able to build within families and communities for generations. Not all whites, obviously, since there are a great number of poor whites (and all groups), but at the other end, the upper income end, whites were given privileges and rights that blacks were forbidden.

All the rest is just more "Poor us white people" crap. Affirmative Action was a minor attempt to offset the white bias in universities and other government institutions, so any claim that it "discriminated" against whites is moronic at best. The most whites can whine about there is that their privileged status was no longer unchallenged. Soup kitchens and the rest are far white and black people, and all others, and if the author believes black people benefit more from such charity, the author needs to ask why black people need such charity more. The answer to that question destroys the fantasy world of the email.

As for the supposed rhetorical questions about whether white America is really responsible for the incarceration and crime rate of black America, the answer is easily yes. Forced poverty, lack of opportunity, poor schools, a history of economic suppression of the economic wealth base and thus the economic growth possibilities of black communities, a repressive law enforcement system clearly proven over and over again to arrest, convict, and imprison longer for African Americans than for white Americans for the same crimes, and crimes that were crafted to punish African Americans more than whites for equivalent actions (such as laws providing harsher sentences for crack than for regular cocaine), all prove that African Americans face a legal repression that white people just don't face, and if the author of this piece is typical, white people can't even grasp. (yes, that was one sentence, but I stand by it's grammatical accuracy).

Your first answer was much better than mine, and much closer to your friend's intellectual ability, though. I'd stick with it. As LBJ said, you shouldn't try to teach a pig manners. It wastes your time and angers the pig.

18. tell him it's not his fault...
If he does not care to look outside of his comfort zone and witness the cause and effect of human slavery, that's his business. Obviously his self-identity of superiority because of the color of his skin, or the geographic location of his birth, is his to deal with. It seems more likely every day, that the children of these bigots will need to find a way to get into another country to provide for their own families. I hope they are treated the same way.
