RasmussenReports.com

Wednesday August 11, 2004--For the second straight day, the Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll shows Senator John Kerry with 49% of the vote and President George W. Bush with 46%. The Tracking Poll is updated daily by noon Eastern.

Today is the first time in more than six months of daily polling that either candidate has reached the 49% mark on consecutive days. Since Senator Kerry wrapped up the Democratic nomination on Super Tuesday, he has now reached the 49% mark on four occasions. During that same time frame, President Bush has never exceeded 48% in our Tracking Poll.

1. No such thing as a lock
This is nice, but we can't relax until the election is over.

3. It would be nice to keep it going until...
...we have the biggest electoral landslide in history.

2. It's funny how Ann Coulter tried to say the opposite would happen.
Whenever America is threatened from outside, Republicans have a lock on the Oval Office.

What? World War II? The Cuban missle crisis? What is she talking about? It might be the Iran hostage thing, but did people really feel threatened by that generally? She thinks her readers are too stupid to have a rudimentary knowledge of history or something!

4. democrats also have a 7-point lead on the congressional
ballot--45-38. I've noticed the lead on this ballot Democrats have been solid 44-45 percent on the congressional ballots while republicans have seldom been above 38 or 39 percent. I think we may see something comparable to '94 if this keeps up.

8. Gerrymandering will make the congressional ballot numbers irrelevant.
Very few individual House seats are actually competitive. All that generic ballot is saying is that entrenched Democratic seats are going to be REALLY, REALLY, REALLY SAFE, and that solidly Republican seats are only going to be REALLY SAFE.

Still, I'm not complaining. But I will be shocked if the Democrats actually win back the House.

5. don't get comfortable
As 2000 proved, a lock on the popular vote doesn't guarantee anything.

7. It's kind of like bailing water
You can get to a point where the boat isn't threatening to sink, but you can't stop bailing, not for a second. We have wiggle room now, that is all. We still need to work had and make sure we don't win by just a hair's breadth, we (yes, WE, not just Kerry, but all of us) need to win by a significant and ideally history making margin.
